Post-bop developed in the mid-1960s, especially within Miles Davis's second great quintet, as musicians extended hard bop's vocabulary with the harmonic openness of modal jazz and some of free jazz's rhythmic and structural looseness, while still retaining swing feel and composed melodic heads. It is marked by more abstract, freely interacting rhythm sections, adventurous harmony, and a balance between composition and open improvisation. Pianist Herbie Hancock and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, both members of that Davis quintet, are among its defining figures.
