Marco Vaggi is a Milan-born double bassist who has spent close to five decades as one of the city's most consistently in-demand jazz sidemen, without ever making a solo leader album under his own name. Born in Milan in 1957, he trained inside the Milanese musicians' cooperative "Orchestra," led by Franco Fabbri, and through the jazz movement centered on the Capolinea club, supplementing that with jazz courses organized at the conservatory by Giorgio Gaslini. He turned professional in the late 1970s, beginning as the double bassist in drummer Gianni Cazzola's quintet.

From there, Vaggi built a career defined by longevity inside a small circle of major Milanese and Italian bandleaders rather than by leading his own dates. He played bass in Giorgio Gaslini's quintet, Discogs-confirmed on the group's Live At The Public Theater In New York (1980), a double live album recorded during a Gaslini quintet tour that also drew coverage from the New York Times, New York Post and Down Beat. He became a fixture of pianist Guido Manusardi's working groups across three decades, from the Bridge Into The New Generation (1983) quintet session through the Guido Manusardi Trio's The Nearness Of You (2005), Empathy (2011) and Metamorphosis (2015), plus the earlier live set Poinciana, recorded in Bari in 1985 and issued in 2008.
