Tito Mangialajo Rantzer on the cover of his 2014 solo album *Dal Basso in Alto* (Solista Records). Non-CC album cover art, honestly disclosed (no CC/PD photograph of Mangialajo Rantzer could be found - see search trail below). — Official Bandcamp release page (titomangialajorantzer.bandcamp.com/album/dal-basso-in-alto), full-resolution cover image; used uncropped, a close head-and-shoulders portrait.
Tito Mangialajo Rantzer was born in Milan on June 3, 1967. He took up the double bass after hearing recordings of Ray Brown and Scott LaFaro, and studied with Franco Feruglio, Giorgio Azzolini and Furio Di Castri in Italy, and in masterclass settings with the American bassists Walter Booker, Dave Holland and Barre Phillips. Discogs catalogues 93 release-relationship credits under his name between 1995 and 2025, almost entirely on jazz labels (Splasc(h), Soul Note, Black Saint, Caligola, Abeat, Rudi Records), and he has told interviewers he has played on roughly 150 jazz CDs across his career to date.
He built that catalogue almost entirely as a sideman before leading a date of his own. Discogs-verified credits place him on record with trumpeter Giovanni Falzone across five albums between 2002 and 2007 - Music For Five (2002, on which saxophonist Tino Tracanna also appears), Big Fracture (2003), Earthquake Suite (2004), Live In Clusone (2004) and Suite For Bird (2005, on which he is credited on bass) - and in violist Paolo Botti's working rhythm section across six records from Leggende Metropolitane (2000, double bass credit confirmed) through Lomax Lives! (2019). He also appears, credited on contrabass, on nine of the eleven tracks of Amore Pirata! (1998, Il Manifesto), a session led by the Lorenzo Gasperoni Mamud Band that features the American trumpeter Lester Bowie; and on double bass on The Legend Of The Missing Link (2002, Splasc(H) Records), led by the American trumpeter Herb Robertson. Press materials also credit him with performances alongside Roswell Rudd, George Garzone, Brian Lynch and Joe Fonda, and with a long list of further Italian collaborators including Antonio Zambrini, pianist and composer Piero Delle Monache, guitarist Massimo Minardi, drummer Tiziano Tononi and pianist Arrigo Cappelletti; none of those additional names turned up an independently matching Discogs release credit in this profile's research, so they are reported here as artist-stated rather than session-verified. One exception is Tononi: Discogs does confirm Mangialajo Rantzer's presence (acoustic bass, handclaps) on two of Tononi's own large-ensemble dates, We Did It, We Did It! (Rahsaan & The None) (2000) and Rivers Of Dreams (2004), as well as Forms And Sounds (2018) with Tononi's Ornettians, though Tononi himself has no profile on this site to cross-link.
In 2011 he began a duo partnership with alto saxophonist Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, recording When We Forget The Melody (2011) and When We Forget The Melody Vol. 2 (2014, Discogs-tagged Free Jazz), both for Rudi Records, with Mangialajo Rantzer credited as composer of the music as well as on double bass. The same year he was one-quarter of guitarist Massimo Minardi's standards quartet on Are U Standard? (2011). In 2020 he contributed a composition, "Amaciado," to Incontro, a trio album led by pianist Antonio Zambrini with Danish bassist Jesper Bodilsen on double bass; Mangialajo Rantzer does not perform on that recording, only composes.
After twenty-five years as a recording sideman, Mangialajo Rantzer released his first album under his own name, Dal Basso in Alto (2014, Solista Records), a solo double bass record on which he also sings and whistles; All About Jazz's Neri Pollastri reviewed it on its release, noting its Ornette Coleman tribute and original tunes contributed by frequent collaborators Zambrini, Delle Monache and Botti. A quartet album, Dedications, followed in 2016 on the same label. Since 2021 he has held the bass chair in saxophonist Claudio Fasoli's standing NeXt 4et, a Discogs-confirmed double bass credit across all three of the group's albums to date, Next (2021, voted best Italian jazz CD of the year by Musica Jazz), Ambush (2023) and Hasard (2024). His most recent album as a leader, Tudela, is a pianoless quartet record with tributes to Anthony Braxton, Elvin Jones and Eric Dolphy, released June 3, 2026, his fifty-ninth birthday.
Beyond the jazz catalogue, Mangialajo Rantzer has played bass in the soundtracks of several films by director Silvio Soldini, among them Pane e Tulipani, Brucio nel vento, Agata e la tempesta and Giorni e nuvole, and in two Marcos Jorge films and a Roberto Faenza feature; in 2004 he played electric bass in the premiere of composer Nicola Campogrande's Concerto for cello, electric bass and strings, with Mario Brunello on cello and conducting. In 2000 Musica Jazz's annual critics' poll placed him among the ten best new talents in Italian jazz. He has toured across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas, and since 2014 has taught jazz double bass and jazz electric bass at the conservatories of Brescia, Mantova, Pavia and Verona; he currently holds the jazz bass chair at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. All About Jazz's own house tags for him read "Contemporary Jazz," "free cool" and "free bop."
Mangialajo Rantzer's catalogue runs on two registers that meet at the same instrument. The larger one is ensemble work built from composed material and standards - the Falzone sessions, the Botti rhythm-section dates, Fasoli's NeXt 4et - where Discogs tags land mostly on straightforward Jazz and the more specific Contemporary Jazz. The other is a freer, duo-centred practice: the two When We Forget The Melody records with Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, both Discogs-tagged Free Jazz, and the homages that run through his own leader dates, from the Ornette Coleman tribute on his solo debut to the Anthony Braxton, Elvin Jones and Eric Dolphy dedications on Tudela. His training places him close to the source on both sides: Italian teachers steeped in the post-bop and modern-mainstream tradition (Franco Feruglio, Giorgio Azzolini, Furio Di Castri) alongside direct study with Walter Booker, Dave Holland and Barre Phillips, three American bassists whose own careers span hard bop, fusion and free improvisation.
