Jorge Rossy was born in 1964 in Barcelona, Spain, and played with Lluís Vidal in the Spanish jazz scene during the 1980s, also touring and recording with internationally acclaimed artists including Sal Nistico, Dave Schnitter, Woody Shaw, Kenny Wheeler, and Jack Walrath between 1980 and 1989. In 1990 he arrived at Berklee College of Music to study trumpet, despite already being a professional drummer.
International recognition came when he took the drum chair in pianist Brad Mehldau's trio, completed by bassist Larry Grenadier, whose own career is covered in full in his JazzProfiles.com profile. Rossy remained a member of the trio for ten years, touring the world with two musicians who became close friends. His sideman work spans more than 180 recordings with artists including Brad Mehldau, Ethan Iverson, pianist Kevin Hays, whose own career is covered in full in his JazzProfiles.com profile, Albert Sanz, Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jakob Bro, Enrico Pieranunzi, and Steve Swallow.
Since his first CD as a leader, Trio Wicca (2006, Fresh Sound), Rossy has recorded more than 30 albums as bandleader or co-leader, drawing critical acclaim from Jazz Times, Down Beat, Jazz Around, and All About Jazz.
Rossy's decade inside Brad Mehldau's celebrated trio, combined with his more than 180 sideman recordings across the international post-bop scene, established him as one of the most influential drummers of his generation, equally significant as a bandleader in his own right since the mid-2000s.
