Marco Postacchini is a saxophonist, composer, arranger and jazz educator from Italy's Marche region. He graduated in saxophone from the Conservatorio "G.B. Pergolesi" in Fermo and, separately, in Band Instrumentation, Composition and Jazz (composition, arrangement and jazz orchestra direction) from the Conservatorio "G. Rossini" in Pesaro. In 2011 he studied privately with Hal Crook, a Berklee College of Music faculty member. He now holds the chair of Jazz Composition at the Fermo conservatory where he trained, and teaches harmony, arranging, improvisation and saxophone at several other Marche institutions, including schools in Senigallia, Ancona and Arcevia.

Postacchini leads two of his own groups. The Marco Postacchini Octet, also billed as MP's Jazzy Bunch, formed in 2009 and released three albums on the Notami Jazz label: Lazy Saturday (2010), Do You Agree? (2013, with a guest appearance by trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso), and Old Stuff, New Box (2018, with guest spots for vocalist Ada Montellanico and guitarist Fabio Zeppetella). All three are Discogs-verified octet dates with a stable core lineup of Simone La Maida (alto saxophone), Gabriele Pesaresi (bass), Emanuele Evangelista (piano), Massimo Morganti (trombone), Samuele Garofoli (trumpet) and Alessandro Paternesi (drums). The Marco Postacchini Big Band followed with One Finger Snap (2022, Alfa Music), an expanded large-ensemble session featuring vocalists Chiara Pancaldi and Joe Pisto, reviewed by All About Jazz; its repertoire mixes Herbie Hancock's title track with bossa novas by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Toninho Horta and Joe Henderson's "Recordame." In 2024 the octet released a fifth leader album, Shades of Blue (Barly Records), an homage to Blue Note Records built around eight compositions from the label's catalog (including pieces associated with Wayne Shorter, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and John Coltrane) plus two Quincy Jones pieces, arranged for the octet with an emphasis on tuba. This release does not yet appear in Postacchini's own Discogs artist entry; its existence and personnel are independently confirmed by Italian press coverage (CentroPagina, Redapolis Music) rather than by the Discogs API, and it is flagged as a documented Discogs gap rather than silently included as though verified the same way as his other albums.

Alongside his own leader dates, Postacchini has built an extensive career as a sideman, arranger and section player, with over fifty recording credits by his own account. He is the baritone saxophonist of the Colours Jazz Orchestra, a Marche-based big band led by trombonist Massimo Morganti, and appears on its Nineteen Plus One (Astarte, 2009), a set of big-band arrangements by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler recorded at Naive Studio in Fano in June 2007, and shares a track, "How Deep Is the Ocean," directly with Wheeler at the Discogs credit level. He also plays on the orchestra's Home Away From Home (Neuklang, 2014), arranged and conducted by Ayn Inserto. Other Discogs-verified sideman credits include Gabriele Pesaresi's Something About (2017), the Ludovico Carmenati Octet's In the Afternoon (2016), Giuseppe Cistola's Por La Calle Argentina (2020) and The Five Elements (2021), and the Italian Jazz Orchestra's Que Sera, Sera (Omaggio a Doris Day) alongside Petra Magoni and Paolo Fresu (Musica Jazz, 2021). Beyond Discogs, his own published discography lists further work spanning nearly three decades, including multiple Paolo Belli Big Band albums, Raphael Gualazzi's Bar Del Sole (Universal/Sugar, 2022), and music for the long-running Italian television dance show Ballando con le stelle across eleven editions.

Postacchini's working identity sits at the intersection of the mainstream small-group jazz combo and the big-band arranging tradition. His octet records draw on the standard jazz-standards-plus-originals format typical of Italian regional working bands, while his training in jazz orchestra direction at the Pesaro conservatory and his ongoing seat in the Colours Jazz Orchestra place him inside a big-band arranging lineage that runs through Kenny Wheeler and Ayn Inserto, both of whom he has performed under directly. One Finger Snap (2022) leans further into that large-ensemble writing, with the Latin and bossa nova material of Jobim and Toninho Horta alongside hard-bop repertoire from Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson. Shades of Blue (2024) turns the octet format toward direct repertoire homage, reworking Blue Note Records' 1950s and 1960s catalog for an eight-piece band built around a featured tuba chair. As an educator holding the jazz composition post at his own home conservatory, Postacchini's career also runs a parallel track training the next generation of Marche-region jazz musicians in the same combo-to-big-band vocabulary his own records occupy.
