Ari Hoenig was born November 13, 1973, in Philadelphia, into a musical family — his father a conductor and classical singer, his mother a violinist and pianist. He began on violin and piano at age four, started drums at twelve, and by fourteen was already sitting in with Philadelphia jazz musicians at clubs such as Ortlieb's JazzHaus.
Hoenig studied for three years at the University of North Texas under Ed Soph while playing in the school's "One O'Clock" jazz band, then transferred in 1995 to William Paterson College in New Jersey to be closer to New York City. He soon found work with legendary Philadelphia organist Shirley Scott and became a regular presence on the New York scene. His first album as a leader, Time Travels, was released on the 1K label in 2000, followed by The Life of a Day in 2002 on Ah HA Records; later leader albums include Lines of Oppression, Jazz Side of the Moon: The Music of Pink Floyd, and NY Standard, a tribute to the New York standards tradition.
For six years Hoenig was a member of the Jean-Michel Pilc Trio and the Kenny Werner Trio; Werner's own career is covered in full in his JazzProfiles.com profile. He has also played extensively in the Chris Potter Underground, whose leader is covered in full in his JazzProfiles.com profile, and in bands led by guitarist Wayne Krantz. Hoenig is known for an unusual and intense approach to drumming that treats the kit as a fully melodic, harmonic voice within the group rather than a purely time-keeping role. He teaches on the faculty of New York University and The New School and gives clinics and lectures internationally.
Hoenig's drumming is distinguished by its melodic and harmonic ambition — famously tuning his drums to play recognizable melodies — elevating the instrument to an equal voice in the ensemble rather than a backing role, a signature that shaped his work with Jean-Michel Pilc, Kenny Werner, and Chris Potter.
