Mario Corvini is a Milan-born trombonist, composer, arranger and conductor who has spent four decades at the center of Rome's institutional jazz-orchestra scene. He began studying trombone at age eleven under his father, Alberto Corvini, an Italian-Argentine trumpeter who spent thirty years as principal trumpet of the RAI (Italian state broadcaster) light-music orchestra and worked alongside Astor Piazzolla and Gato Barbieri. Corvini's older brother is trumpeter Claudio Corvini, also profiled on this site; the two are Discogs-confirmed together on six releases spanning 1989 to 2026, from Il Principe (1989) through Rosario Giuliani's Brassing (2026) - a documented professional partnership, not a coincidental shared surname. Corvini signed his first professional contract in 1986, as principal trombonist with RAI Milan's Light Rhythms Orchestra.
From 1986 to 2004 Corvini played trombone in pianist Riccardo Fassi's Tankio Band, recording four albums with the group. The earliest, Il Principe (1989, Splasc(h) Records), co-billed to the band and American saxophonist Steve Grossman, is Discogs-confirmed to also include brother Claudio Corvini on trumpet, guitarist Fabio Zeppetella, trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini and trumpeter Aldo Bassi. The band's later albums - Notte (1991), Plays the Music of Frank Zappa (1995), Serial Killer (2001) and Plays Zappa: The Return of the Fat Chicken (2017) - all also carry Corvini's trombone credit on Discogs.
In 1993 Corvini co-founded the Roma Jazz Ensemble with drummer Pietro Iodice, recording Signor Jones (2000) and Fast Race (2005) as the Corvini & Iodice Roma Jazz Ensemble, both on Rome jazz imprints (Via Veneto Jazz and Brave Art Records). In 2005 that ensemble evolved into the Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra (PMJO), the resident big band of Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica under the Fondazione Musica per Roma, where Corvini has served as a principal composer and arranger. A separate, earlier credit places him in Giorgio Gaslini's Grande Orchestra Nazionale di Jazz on the album Live (2000, Soul Note, recorded in 1992), Discogs-confirmed alongside brother Claudio Corvini and fellow trumpeters Emilio Soana, Giampaolo Casati and Flavio Boltro, and pianist Stefano Battaglia, all under Giorgio Gaslini's direction.
Alongside performing, Corvini has built a substantial teaching career: he directed the Theory, Composition and Jazz Arrangement department at Rome's Saint Louis College of Music from 2006 to 2008, and has taught jazz trombone and trumpet at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome since 2009. His original compositions and arrangements have placed first in the "Scrivere in Jazz" competition in Sassari (1998) and the Barga Jazz international arranging competition (2002). In 2012 he founded the New Talents Jazz Orchestra, a big band for emerging players, co-leading its 2016 album Extempora with saxophonist Daniele Tittarelli, also profiled on this site. Corvini's discography also includes a long parallel career as a first-call trombonist for Italian pop, television and film sessions, recording behind Loretta Goggi, Morandi, Giorgia, Gigi D'Alessio, Carmen Consoli, Marina Rei, Valeria Rossi and Renato Zero, and playing on soundtrack sessions for RAI and film composers - a studio-work pattern that mirrors his father's own RAI-orchestra generation.
