Stefano Tamborrino is a Florentine drummer, percussionist and composer, born in 1980 and raised in nearby Signa. Self-taught, he came up playing by ear rather than through formal conservatory training, and has since become one of the busiest drummers on the Italian jazz scene, playing an estimated 150 concerts a year and appearing on roughly thirty recordings across a wide range of working bands.

His longest-standing outlet is Hobby Horse, a trio with reedist Dan Kinzelman and bassist Joe Rehmer that has operated since 2010 and expanded into the sextet Ghost Horse (adding trombonist Filippo Vignato, tuba and euphonium player Glauco Benedetti and guitarist Gabrio Baldacci), whose 2019 debut Trojan and 2022 follow-up Il Bene Comune (both Hora Records) drew notice in the Italian and international jazz press. He has also been the regular drummer in pianist Simone Graziano's working groups, recording the trio debut Lightwalls (2010) and three albums with Graziano's quintet Frontal - Frontal (2013), Trentacinque (2015) and Sexuality (2019), all on AUAND - and was the drummer of pianist Alessandro Galati's trio for six albums between 2014 and 2019, alongside bassist Gabriele Evangelista, starting with Seals (2014, Via Veneto Jazz), named Best Instrumental Album of the Year by the Japanese magazine Jazz Critique.

Tamborrino leads his own projects as well. Seacup (2021, Tuk Music) is a chamber-jazz session for a six-piece ensemble built around strings, pairing his drums, voice and electronics with violin, viola, cello and the saxophone of his regular Hobby Horse bandmate Dan Kinzelman. He is a founding member of the trio Don Karate, alongside bassist Francesco Ponticelli, whose records I Dance to the Silence (2018), Don Karate (2020, Original Cultures) and Space Foresta (2022-2023, Hokkaido Records) move into electronic, hip-hop-inflected and ambient territory while still carrying Discogs' own "Avant-garde Jazz" tag. In 2022 he joined guitarist Francesco Diodati and vocalist Leila Martial in the trio Oliphantre for the AUAND release of the same name, and in 2023 he formed a trio with saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti and bassist Danilo Gallo for Post Atomic Zep (doKumenta Music), a jazz reworking of the Led Zeppelin songbook.

His sideman credits extend further into Italy's jazz institutions: he is the drummer on Trio 70's (2016, Casa del Jazz), trombonist Gianluca Petrella's live trio recording with organist Michele Papadia, and on Rebel Band (2016, Casa del Jazz), pianist Giovanni Guidi's large-ensemble session. With bassist Matteo Bortone he recorded the trio album ClarOscuro (2018, C.A.M. Jazz) and, the same year, appeared on pianist Enrico Intra's Gregoriani & Spirituals (Alfa Music), a project blending Gregorian chant and African-American spirituals, with Bortone again on bass. He is Discogs-credited on guitarist Paolo Angeli's Sardinian Liturgy (2016, Jazzhead), which pairs Sardinian canto a tenore traditions with a trio of Australian jazz musicians. A single Discogs-verified track credit also connects him to pianist Stefano Bollani: "Impro / Halleluja," track nine on Bollani's 2011 career-spanning box set Unlimited.

Since 2017 Tamborrino has also toured internationally in a trio with American saxophonist David Binney and multi-instrumentalist Louis Cole, playing dates in the United States, Japan and China, an experience he has described as formative for his own playing.

Tamborrino's catalogue runs from lyrical, melody-first post-bop (the Galati trio, the early Frontal records) through free-leaning collective improvisation (Hobby Horse and its sextet expansion Ghost Horse) to overtly genre-crossing projects that fold jazz into rock, hip-hop and electronics (Don Karate, Post Atomic Zep, Oliphantre). Across all of it his drumming favors color and texture over straight timekeeping: Discogs credits routinely list him on voice, electronics, glockenspiel and keyboards alongside the drum kit, and several of his bandleader relationships (Graziano, Galati, Bortone, Diodati) place him as the connecting rhythm-section voice across more than a decade of Italy's AUAND- and Casa del Jazz-centered working-band scene.
