Christopher Tordini was born in 1984 and built his career from the ground up inside one of the most demanding training grounds in American jazz: the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, where he graduated in May 2006. While still a student, he was already working professionally alongside faculty members, most notably guitarist Rory Stuart, drummer Ari Hoenig, and saxophonist George Garzone, relationships that outlasted his time in school and set the tone for a career built on long, loyal musical partnerships rather than one-off session work.

The two relationships that came to define his early professional identity both began around the same time. In 2005, while still a student, he started playing with drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey, a collaboration that has now run for more than two decades across some of the most acclaimed and boundary-pushing records in contemporary creative music. He joined Sorey's regular working trio, documented across a run of albums for Pi Recordings that trace an evolving lineup and sound: Oblique - I (2011), Alloy (2014, with pianist Cory Smythe), The Inner Spectrum of Variables (2016), and Verisimilitude (2017) — the last of these, with Smythe on piano and Tordini on bass, singled out by critics for dissolving the line between jazz improvisation and the modern classical influences of Morton Feldman and Iannis Xenakis. Sorey was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2017, and Tordini's name runs through the discography of that period as a constant.

Around the same time, pianist Andy Milne brought Tordini into Dapp Theory, the genre-crossing band Milne had led since the late 1990s. Tordini toured and recorded with the group for more than a decade, appearing on Layers of Chance (2008), the Forward in All Directions project (2012-2014, on Contrology Records), and The Seasons of Being (2018, Sunnyside) — a run that shows the same pattern found throughout his catalog: not a guest appearance here and there, but sustained membership in working bands over many years.

Tordini is also a founding member of the Becca Stevens Band, present from the group's earliest, self-released Tea Bye Sea (2008) through Weightless (2011, Sunnyside), Perfect Animal (2015, Universal Music Classics), and Stevens's Wonderbloom (2020, GroundUP Music). He serves as bassist of the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, appearing on the Grammy-nominated All Can Work (2018, New Amsterdam Records) — the ensemble's third Grammy nomination in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category, following A Blessing (2005) and Eternal Interlude (2009) — and he has recorded with the John Hollenbeck-founded Claudia Quintet, on September (2013, Cuneiform Records).

What separates Tordini from a purely session-list career is how many of his affiliations became genuine, repeated co-leaderships rather than sideman dates. He is one-third of the Chris Speed Trio, alongside drummer Dave King, across four Intakt Records albums running from Platinum on Tap (2017) through Despite Obstacles (2023). He is a founding member of The Choir Invisible, a collectively driven trio with saxophonist Charlotte Greve and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza that has released two albums on Intakt — The Choir Invisible (recorded 2018, released 2020) and Town of Two Faces (2024) — on which Tordini also served as co-producer for the debut. He has also worked as duo/trio co-leader on a string of self-released, pandemic-era recordings issued directly through his own Bandcamp page: Outlet and Something to Fvcking Do (both 2020, with Icelandic saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson, the latter also featuring John Hollenbeck) and EEAAII (2021, a free-improvising trio with Kate Gentile and Jon Irabagon).

His most fully "his own" record, though, is Midnight Sun (2017), released on the vinyl-only subscription label Newvelle Records and billed publicly as the Chris Tordini Trio, featuring vocalist Becca Stevens and guitarist Greg Ruggiero. A stripped-down set of standards bookended by two Ornette Coleman-associated pieces, it puts Tordini's own name on the spine for the first time — reviewers singled out Stevens's voice as the record's lead improvising instrument, with Tordini's bass work described as warm, woody, and felt as much as heard.

Beyond these core relationships, Tordini's discography as a sideman runs deep and wide: extended work with pianist Matt Mitchell (Vista Accumulation, 2015; Zealous Angles, 2024, both Pi Recordings), saxophonist Angelika Niescier's trio with Sorey (The Berlin Concert, 2018) and, with Gerald Cleaver and Jonathan Finlayson, New York Trio (2019), both on Intakt; alto saxophonist Caroline Davis's Portals series (Volumes 1 and 2, 2021 and 2024); Miguel Zenón's Golden City (2024); Ben Monder's Planetarium (2024, Sunnyside); Miles Okazaki's Boomtown (2026, Pi Recordings); the Lee Konitz Nonet's Old Songs New (2019); drummer Billy Hart's Sixty-Eight (2011, SteepleChase); cellist Okkyung Lee's Noisy Love Songs (2011, Tzadik); and Tigran Hamasyan's Mockroot (2015, Nonesuch), among many others spanning European free improvisation, big-band jazz, and vocal-forward chamber-pop.

Tordini's playing sits at the intersection of straight-ahead post-bop time-feel and the open, textural language of contemporary creative music, and his career is built less around a single signature sound than around adaptability: the same bassist grounds the knotty compositional structures of Tyshawn Sorey's chamber-jazz trio, the earthy backbeat pulse of Andy Milne's Dapp Theory, the vocal-driven chamber-pop of the Becca Stevens Band, and the freely improvised, self-released duo and trio sessions he has issued on his own Bandcamp page. In interviews he has described composing not for a fixed instrumentation but by working out "how many voices would be needed to execute" an idea — a compositional instinct that carries over into his playing, where he is equally comfortable holding down a clear harmonic and rhythmic foundation and dissolving into fully collective improvisation. His long tenures inside working bands rather than one-off sideman dates — with Sorey since 2005, with Milne for over a decade, as a founding member of both the Becca Stevens Band and The Choir Invisible — point to a musician valued as much for consistency and trust within an ensemble as for individual virtuosity.
