Guido Manusardi is a pianist and composer born on 3 December 1935 in Chiavenna, in the province of Sondrio in northern Lombardy. He studied piano with Luigia Ceradini in Milan, and Italian Wikipedia dates his professional career from 1957. He turned 90 in December 2025 and is still performing: on 7 December 2025 the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini in Gallarate gave him an honorary degree at the Teatro del Popolo, with a piano recital as part of the ceremony. Discogs lists 100 releases under his name, 34 of them as main artist, and the earliest go back to 1967.

His career began abroad. Biographies say he worked in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark before settling in Sweden, and they disagree on how long he stayed (five years in Italian Wikipedia and the Saint Louis school's jazz archive, seven on his own website). In Stockholm he met the American bassist Red Mitchell, the friendship and partnership that runs longest through his discography. The first record Discogs documents is Blue Train (Swedisc, 1967), a trio date with bassist Sture Nordin and drummer Albert Heath, the Swedisc credit for Albert "Tootie" Heath. In 1974 he recorded with Mitchell in Stockholm several times: Romanian Impressions (Amigo), made on 26 March 1974 at EMI's Stockholm studio with saxophonist Lennart Åberg and percussionist Pétur Östlund; Givin' Livin' (Carosello, 1976), recorded at the Golden Hat club in spring 1974; and duo sets from the Guldhatten Club, issued as Red Mitchell Meets Guido Manusardi (Produttori Associati, 1976) and later as Formidouble!!! (Splasc(h), 2005). The partnership continued in Italy on Symbiosis (Atlantic, 1980), the private-issue My Foolish Things (1985) and Together Again (Soul Note, 1991).

In 1967, after a first return to Italy, he moved to Bucharest and stayed for seven years. Discogs documents a substantial body of work from those years. Free Jazz, recorded in 1967 and released on the Romanian state label Electrecord in February 1968, has bassist Johnny Răducanu, drummer Vasile Ganea, tenor saxophonist Dan Mîndrilă and trombonist Nicolae Farcaș, and Discogs tags it Free Jazz. Piano Jazz (Dire, 1969) reuses the same rhythm section. He plays piano on part of clarinetist Alexandru Imre's Electrecord Dixieland LP (1970), recorded a trio album, Make Someone Happy, in Bucharest in 1973, and made Impresii Din Vacanță (Electrecord, 1974) with bassist Giorgio Azzolini and drummer Tullio De Piscopo, with a string ensemble added. Electrecord material of this period reappeared on the 2007 Sonar Kollektiv compilation Romanian Jazz: Jazz From The Electrecord Archives 1966-1978.

He returned to Italy in 1974 and most of his records from then on were made in Milan. A quartet date at the Ljubljana Jazz Festival on 9 June 1972, with saxophonist Claudio Fasoli, Azzolini and De Piscopo, was issued as Live Suite (BASF, 1974); his official biography says it won a critics' prize. In 1975 Carosello's Jazz from Italy series gave him a solo album, Blue & New Things, and used him as pianist on Slide Hampton's Life Music (with Azzolini on bass), on Eraldo Volonté's Safari (where he also plays a Fender electric piano) and on part of a Milan session with Bud Freeman and Wingy Manone. Delirium (Atlantic, 1976), recorded live at Charlie's House in Milan on 16 February 1976 with liner notes by Arrigo Polillo, is the record his official biography credits with a second critics' prize and a musician-of-the-year title. In October 1977 his quartet, with saxophonist Peter Guidi, bassist Lucio Terzano and drummer Gianni Cazzola, played the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw and recorded Namymanu there with alto saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski, and his biographies call him the first Italian jazz musician invited to the Montreux festival; Live In Montreux - Piano Performance (WEA, 1982) is a solo set recorded there.

The Milan label Splasc(h) Records became his home through the 1980s and after. Bridge Into The New Generation, recorded on 8 June 1981 and released in 1983, is a quintet record with saxophonists Fulvio Sisti and Pietro Tonolo, and in 1983 he made a live duo album, Maestro + Maestro = Exciting Duo, with tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso. His trio record Down Town (Soul Note, 1986) has drummer Ed Thigpen and bassist Isla Eckinger and liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Love And Peace (1986) is a solo recital at the church of San Lorenzo in his home town, and Canzoni Per Una Valle, a promotional LP for the Chiavenna valley with the local Corale Laurenziana choir, features Lee Konitz on alto saxophone. Trumpeter Marco Tamburini is the front line on Bra Session (1987) and Acqua Fragia (1989). Jazzt In Time (1989) adds vocalist Roberta Gambarini and guitarist Bruno De Filippi, and De Filippi and guitarist Franco Cerri are in the band on Caterina Valente's A Briglia Sciolta (1990), on which Manusardi is credited on piano and as an arranger.

He recorded steadily through the 1990s: So That (Splasc(h), 1990) with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Gianni Cazzola; Colored Passages (RAM, 1993) with saxophonist George Garzone, bassist John Lockwood and drummer Bob Gullotti; Between The 2 Of Us (1994), a duo record credited jointly to him and Gianni Bedori; the solo Solo Live "Concerto" (Splasc(h), 1995); and Within (Soul Note, 1996) with tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, bassist Dave Santoro and drummer Victor Lewis. The Village Fair (Soul Note, 1997), recorded in October 1996, is a sextet album of his own compositions with Paolo Fresu, Gianluigi Trovesi, trombonist Roberto Rossi, bassist Furio Di Castri and drummer Roberto Gatto; its cover is a pastel by Luigi Manusardi. The live Live At Down Town (Splasc(h), 1996), recorded on 22 September 1994, pairs the trio with Basso and drummer Massimo Manzi.

Doina (Soul Note, 2000) uses seven players, among them trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, Rossi, saxophonist Giulio Visibelli and clarinetist Guido Bombardieri, and every piece is his. That summer he played in Los Angeles, and Live At The Jazz Spot, recorded in Hollywood on 15 July 2000, has bassist Trevor Ware and drummer Billy Higgins. The trio records that followed include The Woodpecker (2001) and Siena Concert (2002) with bassist Lucio Terzano and Cazzola, Lost In Space (2003) with vocalist Rachel Gould, and a run for the Japanese label Sound Hills (The Nearness Of You, No More No Less with bassist Yuri Goloubev and Manzi, and Poinciana, a live 1985 tape from Bari). Folk Tales (Soul Note, 2007) is a quartet date with Terzano, Rossi and Cazzola. Empathy (2011), Metamorphosis (Rearward, 2015) and Swingin (Abeat, 2019, recorded in October 2017 with bassist Roberto Piccolo and Cazzola) are his later trio records. In 2022 he was one of twelve names credited on Santa Tecla Io C'ero (MAP Jazz), a record that returns to Milan's Santa Tecla club, alongside Enrico Intra, Franco Cerri, Emilio Soana and Bruno De Filippi.

Beyond the records, his official biography and Italian Wikipedia say he has been artistic director of the Valtellina Jazz Festival since 1997 and of a jazz workshop and the So Jazz series since 1999, and that Leonard Feather included him in his Encyclopedia of Jazz. His biographies also list Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Jimmy Cobb, Curtis Fuller, Kai Winding, Joe Morello, Cecil Payne, Booker Ervin and Lou Donaldson among the American players he worked with; Discogs itemizes no recording with any of them, so those names rest on the biographies alone. A biography of him, A Portrait in Jazz, is accompanied by a solo disc, Concerto al Conservatorio di Como.

In announcing the honorary degree, the Gallarate conservatory's director described him as a "cosmopolitan and multilinguistic" pianist whose harmonic language joins the jazz core repertoire, the late-Romantic European tradition and the ethnic-popular sounds of Eastern Europe, with a Romanian thread and the example of Bartók, and Tracce di Jazz reports that Manusardi describes himself as a bop pianist with modern tendencies. That fits the records. His trio work sits in a swinging post-bop mainstream, with standards ("The Nearness Of You", "Alone Together", "Poinciana") alongside originals, and Discogs tags Swingin Swing and Post Bop and Colored Passages Post Bop. The Bucharest recordings are more experimental: Free Jazz carries a Free Jazz tag and Impresii Din Vacanță Modal, Contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz. His larger-group records, The Village Fair and Doina, put original folk-inflected writing for a front line of horns over a bop rhythm section, and the title Doina is a Romanian folk-song form. He plays solo often (Blue & New Things, Love And Peace, Solo Live "Concerto"), and the long partnership with Red Mitchell, on seven records, gives his duo work its own strand. A 2025 profile in Tracce di Jazz argues that his birth year placed him between Italy's first modern pianists and the generation of Franco D'Andrea and Enrico Pieranunzi, which may explain why his reputation has been stronger abroad than at home.
