Ronen Itzik is an Israeli jazz drummer, percussionist, and composer, born in 1976 in Jerusalem. He joined his first band as a drummer at fourteen and began formal lessons soon after, his tastes turning toward jazz as he moved through his teens. He trained at the Rimon School of Music in Ramat Hasharon before leaving Israel in 2001 for the United States, earning a Bachelor of Music in Performance, summa cum laude and on scholarship, from Berklee College of Music in 2003, followed by a Master of Music from Florida State University's College of Music, where a graduate teaching assistantship gave him his first classroom-teaching experience. He moved to New York City in 2005 to build a career as a performer and composer, and has been based there since, working across straight-ahead jazz, world-folk fusion, and vocal-driven projects.

Itzik's first significant New York association came through pianist Roy Assaf and bassist Eddy Khaimovich, fellow Israeli transplants he met at the Manhattan School of Music in 2006. Billed as the Roy Assaf & Eddy Khaimovich Quartet, the group's debut, Andarta (2008, Origin Records), added Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen and, on select tracks, trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Itzik and Assaf regrouped in 2011 for Augmented Reality (Daywood Drive Records), a trio billed equally to all three members and completed by Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder, built around Middle Eastern, Latin American, and European folk material; its best-known track, "Sepharadic," is named for the same Sephardic-diaspora material the trio drew on throughout.

A parallel working relationship formed with guitarist Assaf Kehati, another Israeli-born New York transplant. Itzik and bassist Ehud Ettun rounded out the Assaf Kehati Trio for Naked (2014, AKJazz Records), Kehati's Kickstarter-funded third album. Itzik also became the drummer in Ukrainian pianist Vadim Neselovskyi's trio (with bassist Dan Loomis), recording Get Up and Go (2017, Jazz Family) with guest vocalist Sara Serpa. The same trio was tapped the following year by composer and saxophonist John Zorn for Da'at, the eleventh volume of The Book Beri'ah (2018/2019, Tzadik Records), the box set that closed out Zorn's twenty-five-year Masada songbook project; pianist Craig Taborn appears alongside the Neselovskyi trio on the same volume.

Itzik's other steady credits span a wide stylistic range within and around jazz. He plays drums and percussion in trumpeter Josh Deutsch's Pannonia, a quintet built around Balkan- and Eastern-European-inflected "imaginary folk music" alongside violinist Zach Brock, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and bassist Gary Wang; its debut, Another Time, Another Place (2014, Alternate Side Records), was a DownBeat Editor's Pick. He co-founded the vocal-driven trio Morning Bound in 2012 with singer Tammy Scheffer and bassist/vocalist Panagiotis Andreou, and also drums in Scheffer's own sextet, heard on her Inner Circle Music debut Wake Up, Fall Asleep (2010). He is Discogs-credited on releases by pianist Bill Peterson (2004), singer-songwriter Joel Henry Stein (2007 and 2010), guitarist Ben Azar's Organized Memories (2012, Inner Circle Music), the Jacob Teichroew Quintet's Tableaux (2013), and two albums by vocalist Noa Fort (2018 and 2021). He also plays drums on tracks 1 and 3 of Colombian pianist and bandleader Juan Andres Ospina's big-band debut, Tramontana (2018), a large-ensemble session on which fellow Israeli guitarist Nadav Remez is credited on guitar throughout, including those same two tracks.

Beyond the studio, Itzik's own artist biography credits him with live and recording work alongside a long list of established jazz names, among them Lee Konitz, Gary Burton, Kenny Werner, Roy Hargrove, Joe Lovano, Marcus Roberts, Anat Cohen, Hiromi Uehara, and the late Arnie Lawrence; these are carried here as his own long-stated professional biography rather than independently discography-verified credits (see notes.md for detail). He is an official artist endorser for Canopus Drums.

Itzik's drumming spans straight-ahead post-bop and modern mainstream jazz, with a recurring pull toward folk and world material reworked through a jazz rhythm section, most audible in the Roy Assaf trio's Sephardic/Mediterranean fusion and in Josh Deutsch's Pannonia's Balkan-folk-in-odd-meters concept. His standing membership in the Vadim Neselovskyi Trio, and that trio's selection by John Zorn to record a volume of The Book Beri'ah, places him inside the searching, chamber-scaled wing of modern jazz drumming that prizes interplay and dynamic control over volume, a register also present in his hand-percussion work with Morning Bound and Josh Deutsch's Pannonia. Across his sideman work, the constant is versatility: a working New York drummer equally credible in a piano trio, a folk-jazz quintet, a vocal-driven trio, or a large jazz big band.
