Dino Rubino was born October 20, 1980, in Biancavilla, in the province of Catania, Sicily. He started at the piano at three - the instrument was already in the house, and his father was a jazz enthusiast - and by his own account was working as a professional musician, playing piano in clubs and concert halls, by fourteen. In 1991 he began formal classical piano study at the Conservatorio "Vincenzo Bellini" in Catania, and in 1994, after seeing trumpeter Tom Harrell play live, he took up a second instrument, the trumpet. The following year he attended the Siena Jazz seminars and won a scholarship to return; in 1998 he won the Premio Massimo Urbani for best emerging national talent, a prize that recurs across a whole generation of Italian jazz musicians profiled on this site. In 2000, at the invitation of bassist Furio Di Castri, Rubino took part in the Young Artists of Europe programme, touring Turin, Sarajevo, Israel and Stockholm - a real, repeatedly reported credit with no individual Discogs session attached to it, so it is reported here as biography rather than a confirmed recording collaboration.

In 2008 Rubino joined alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso's band, then in its own international touring years; the two recorded together across five years and six Discogs-documented sessions, from Cafiso's own Portrait In Black and White (2008) through the bebop-repertoire Moody'n (Verve Records, 2011, with pianist Giovanni Mazzarino and bassist Rosario Bonaccorso) and the two-man co-billing Travel Dialogues (Jazzy Records, 2010), on which Rubino plays both piano and trumpet. That same year, 2008, he issued his own debut as a leader, Mi Sono Innamorato Di Te, for the Japanese label Venus Records - a quintet session recorded in Bologna with saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, pianist Salvatore Bonafede, bassist Stefano Senni and drummer Walter Paoli, with Rubino himself on trumpet only.

Rubino's own working groups multiplied through the early 2010s: the Dino Rubino Trio's Zenzi (2012, Tǔk Music), with bassist Paolino Dalla Porta and drummer Stefano Bagnoli, and a widening piano-and-brass leader catalogue for Paolo Fresu's Tǔk Music label, beginning with Kairòs (2014) - an octet session with guitarist Giuseppe Mirabella, bassist Riccardo Fioravanti, American drummer Adam Nussbaum and a small horn section - and continuing with Where Is The Happiness? (2017, again with Nussbaum on drums, alongside tenor saxophonist Emanuele Cisi) and Time Of Silence (2021, a trio with Dalla Porta and drummer Enzo Zirilli, the same working unit Rubino has toured as the On Air Trio). Roaming Heart (2015, Bonsaï Music/Tǔk Music) is his sole unaccompanied-piano record to date, recorded in Meudon, France in December 2014 and produced by Fresu and Pierre Darmon; one of its compositions is co-credited to Placido Rubino, a family writing credit consistent with the musical household he has described growing up in.

Fresu became a direct playing partner as well as a label head: the two, with bassist Marco Bardoscia, recorded Tempo Di Chet (2018), a trio tribute to Chet Baker that has since drawn several million streams on Spotify, and Rubino plays piano on Fresu's ensemble record PopOFF! (2021), a jazz reworking of the Italian children's-song-contest Zecchino d'Oro repertoire alongside singer Cristina Zavalloni, reed player Cristiano Arcelli and Bardoscia. He also carries Discogs Appearance credits, without a detailed instrumental role listed release-side, on three further Fresu-led Tǔk Music titles: Around Tǔk (2016), Musica Da Lettura (2021), Ferlinghetti (2022) and Kind Of Miles (2024). His most recent album under his own name, Solitude (2024, Tǔk Music), returns to the working trio format with Bardoscia and Bagnoli, again produced by Fresu.

A further, Discogs-verified strand of sideman work connects Rubino to two more artists already covered on this project: he plays piano on drummer Aldo Romano's trio record Mélodies En Noir & Blanc (2017, Le Triton), alongside bassist Michel Benita, and trumpet and flugelhorn on saxophonist Claudio Giambruno's leader debut Moon Is Here (2012). His broader session catalogue, concentrated in Sicily's jazz scene of the 2000s and 2010s, also includes dates led by guitarist Giuseppe Mirabella, pianist Giovanni Mazzarino and bassist Rosario Bonaccorso, none of whom has a jazzprofiles.com profile at the time of this build, plus tenor saxophonist Emanuele Cisi, who is profiled separately on this project.

Rubino teaches jazz piano at the Conservatorio "Vincenzo Bellini" in Catania, his own alma mater, and in 2017 founded the Monk Jazz Club in his home city. Rubino's dual command of piano and trumpet is the structural fact of his catalogue: he plays one, the other, or occasionally both across nearly every session, from the trumpet-only role on his own 2008 debut to the piano-and-flugelhorn doubling of his later Tǔk Music albums. His writing sits inside a lyrical, chord-rich post-bop language shaped in part by his hard-bop years alongside Cafiso - audible on the bebop-repertoire Moody'n - but his own leader albums lean toward original, ballad-centered compositions with a strong melodic profile, a quality Roaming Heart's solo-piano program and Time Of Silence's spare trio writing both foreground. Tempo Di Chet, his trio tribute to Chet Baker with Fresu and Bardoscia, makes explicit a lineage - light, singing, unhurried phrasing - that runs quietly through his catalogue even on records where he plays only piano.
