Angelo Olivieri was born in Pitigliano, in the Tuscan province of Grosseto, in 1968. He plays trumpet, flugelhorn and pocket trumpet, and works as a composer, arranger and producer as well as a performer. Away from music he holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in fluid dynamics, a technical background separate from his musical training. He has been based in Viterbo for most of his performing career.

Olivieri's Discogs artist entity (2477904, profile text "Italian trumpet and flugelhorn player, born in 1968 in Pitigliano") is a single unambiguous identity carrying 22 credits: 7 as leader/co-leader, 13 as a sideman guest, 1 as producer, and 1 track appearance. Discogs itself flags a genuine name-collision risk: a second, unrelated artist entity (1435847, "Sound Engineer, Musician and Writer") explicitly carries the note "Not to be confused with the homonymous trumpet player" - the two have never been mixed together in this profile.

He made his recorded debut as a leader with Oidé (recorded 2004, released 2006, Terre Sommerse/Jèi), a large-ensemble session with pianist Alessandro De Angelis, guitarist Claudio Riggio, and singer Susanna Stivali among others. The same partnership with De Angelis produced the duo record Nadir (2006, Terre Sommerse), a set mixing originals with standards by Bill Evans, Charles Mingus and Michel Legrand. The following years brought two of his most sustained projects. CAOS Musique, a quartet with French cellist Vincent Courtois, drummer/percussionist Marco Ariano and electronics player Antonio Pulli, recorded the studio album Caos Musique (2009, Terre Sommerse) and a live document, Caos Musique Live @ Casa del Jazz (2013, Terre Sommerse, recorded March 13, 2010); the project went on to represent Italy and France at Europe Jazz Network's Jazz Nights showcase in Oslo in 2012, per his own official biography. The same year he also released Dialogo (2013, Terre Sommerse; live in Teano), a trumpet-and-double-bass duo record with Silvia Bolognesi drawing on repertoire by Don Cherry, Carla Bley and the Lerner/Loewe songbook - though as of this profile no jazzprofiles.com page exists yet for Bolognesi, so her name is not linked.

Olivieri's most recent leader album, Other Colors (recorded August 2017, released 2020 on Aut Records), reunites him with electric bassist Lorenzo Feliciati and guitarist Antonio Jasevoli alongside American drummer Bruce Ditmas, mixing originals with Carla Bley's "Vashkar" and "Ida Lupino," Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," and a reworking of "The House of the Rising Sun." The record's title refers to Olivieri's own color blindness, discovered at 18 and described in his own promotional materials as a kind of synesthetic lens on his listening and playing. Since the first edition of the Jazzit Awards referendum, Italy's long-running critics'-and-readers' jazz poll, Olivieri has stably placed among the country's ten best trumpeters, with additional recurring mentions in the Musica Jazz magazine's annual Top Jazz poll as both instrumentalist and recording artist. He has served as Artistic Director of the Jazz Trumpet Festival in Vitorchiano (Viterbo province) and directed the world-music ensemble Med Free Orkestra from 2013 to 2015. Since 2021 he has led ongoing artistic residencies with the Civitates communities network, running improvised "domestic concerts" and workshops applying improvisational freedom across music, art, theater and dance. One is rooted in composed, small-ensemble contemporary jazz built for working units - the De Angelis duo, CAOS Musique, the Doppio Trio, Other Colors - where original material sits alongside carefully chosen covers (Bill Evans, Mingus, Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry) played with what one reviewer called "a warm, round tone" more mainstream than the surrounding personnel might suggest. The other runs directly through the European free-improvisation and free-jazz circle associated with Rome's Terre Sommerse label: the Echoes session with William Parker and Hamid Drake, and the large-cast If Not tribute to Mario Schiano built entirely around a figure central to that scene, place him squarely inside Italy's post-Instabile-Orchestra generation of improvisers even as his own leader dates stay closer to composed forms.
