Sebastiano "Seby" Burgio was born in 1989 in Solarino, a small town in the province of Syracuse, Sicily, and started on percussion and toy drums at age four before settling on piano. He began formal jazz study at thirteen with pianists Marco Genovese and Alberto Alibrandi, continuing in 2004 with Andrea Beneventano, and names the brothers Rino and Antonino Cirinna of nearby Canicattini Bagni among his early influences. In 2006 he attended the Umbria Jazz summer workshops run by Berklee College of Music faculty and took part in a Gary Burton masterclass there.
In 2008 Burgio entered the "Massimo Urbani" prize, where he won the audience award, a scholarship to Umbria Jazz and a recording contract with Philology Records. The result was his 2009 debut, Giant Steps, a trio session with bassist Massimo Moriconi and drummer Massimo Manzi, both well known from their work with Italian pop singer Mina. In 2011 he won the Lelio Luttazzi Jazz Piano Award in Trieste, chosen from a field of twenty young pianists and a three-way final against Francesco De Luisa and Emanuele Pellegrini, with a jury that included keyboardist Adam Holtzman and pianist Rita Marcotulli. The prize carried a scholarship for a six-month advanced course at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. He completed a classical piano diploma in 2012 at the Conservatorio "A. Corelli" in Messina.
Through the early 2010s Burgio led the trio Urban Fabula, with bassist Alberto Fidone and drummer Peppe Tringali, recording as a backing unit on albums by Sergio Orlandi (2014) and singer Daniela Spalletta, whose D Birth (2015) featured saxophonist Max Ionata as a special guest. He also appears in Sicilian pianist Nello Toscano's Patchwork Project 3 (2012, Anaglyphos Records), a quintet session alongside saxophonist Francesco Cafiso and trumpeter Dino Rubino, and on Maurizio Giammarco's Vie Di Fuga (2012) with the Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo. In 2015 he released his own leader album, Bounce (AUAND Records), a piano trio date described by AllMusic as built on swing and bop colors grounded in his classical technique. That same year he recorded on vocalist Barbara Casini's Brazilian songbook album Uma Mulher, alongside pianist Alessandro Lanzoni.
Burgio relocated to Rome in 2013, and since then has built a parallel career scoring and performing for Italian film and television, with studio credits for RAI, Mediaset, Netflix and Amazon Video productions, and live and recording work alongside singers including Fiorella Mannoia, Massimo Ranieri, Mannarino and Biagio Antonacci. He continues to record and tour in jazz settings: he appears on trumpeter Paolo Fresu's Vincenzo Bellini-themed Norma (2019, with the Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo and arranger Paolo Silvestri), and on saxophonist Gaetano Partipilo's AUAND albums Boom Collective (2019) and Leave&Meet (2021). His ongoing partnership with Toscano has produced a run of albums for Mhodi Music Company (successor to Anaglyphos Records): Inside and Come Back to Sicily (both 2022, the latter also featuring tenor saxophonist Rino Cirinna and trumpeter Stjepko Gut), Stories (2024, with trumpeter Alessandro Presti) and Shades of Red (2026, with singer Antonella Leotta). In 2025 he toured Italy in a duo with trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso in "Il Cielo e Pieno di Stelle," a tribute to the songs of Pino Daniele. Discogs also credits him as a sideman on releases fronted by trombonist Gianluca Petrella and guitarist/producer Nicola Conte.
Burgio's playing favors an open, mainstream jazz vocabulary rooted in swing and bebop phrasing, built on the classical technique he carried from his 2012 Messina conservatory diploma. Bounce, his own 2015 trio date, pairs original tunes with standards such as "Polkadots and Moonbeams" and Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi," a pairing that captures his stated approach: jazz as both a disciplined study and a genuinely enjoyable, everyday music rather than technique for its own sake. Beyond the straight-ahead trio format, his credits range widely: Brazilian songbook material with Barbara Casini, big-band and orchestral writing with the Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo, electric keyboard and synthesizer work on Gaetano Partipilo's more fusion-leaning AUAND sessions, and extensive work outside jazz altogether in Italian film, television and pop session work. He has cited pianist Rita Marcotulli as a major influence and studied the vibraphonist Gary Burton's approach to group improvisation directly at a 2006 Umbria Jazz workshop.
Identity confirmed via the live Discogs API: artist ID 5115608 ("Seby Burgio"), profile text "Italian pianist born in 1989." A database search for the name also returns "Seby Burgio Trio" (id 10308817, the same person's own trio billing, not a distinct musician). His artist page logs 35 release-relationship credits: 6 "Main" (leader or co-leader billing), 1 "Mixed by," 27 "Appearance," and 1 "TrackAppearance."
Listen/Buy note: this vault has no dedicated Spotify API credentials, so links below were verified via web search against title, personnel and year rather than assumed; where no confirmed streaming or video link could be found, the cell reads "not found." 35 Discogs release-relationship credits: 6 Main, 1 Mixed by, 27 Appearance and 1 TrackAppearance. Given the scale, releases with a genuine cross-link payoff to already-profiled artists were individually re-fetched at the extraartists level; several smaller Appearance credits (singles, folk and pop session dates) carry Discogs' own artist-level billing without a separate per-release credit check, consistent with this project's discography-full.md standard.
