Federico Calcagno is a Milan-born clarinetist and bass clarinetist, composer and bandleader who works between Italy and the Netherlands. He was born on May 14, 1995, into a musical household: his father is a pianist and conservatory teacher. He began clarinet at the Milan Conservatory at age 12 and took his classical diploma in 2014, alongside his high-school degree, then a jazz clarinet diploma. In 2019 he finished a jazz master's degree in bass clarinet at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where his bass clarinet teachers were Joris Roelofs and Achille Succi, according to a 2019 interview. The same year he attended the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre in Canada, directed by Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey.
His first band was The Dolphians, a sextet he formed in 2018 in tribute to Eric Dolphy with saxophonists Gianluca Zanello and Luca Ceribelli, vibraphonist Andrea Mellace, bassist Stefano Zambon and drummer Stefano Grasso. Their debut, From Another Planet (Emme Record Label, 2019), reworks Dolphy repertoire, opening with "Hat and Beard / Out to Lunch," and closes with a five-part "Jim Crow Suite" about segregation laws and their present-day echoes; his official biography says the record made JAZZIT magazine's list of the 100 best albums of 2019. Six years later the group returned with Face the Music (Da Vinci Jazz Records, 2025), which adds world-music and hip-hop colors while keeping one Dolphy piece on the program.
At the Amsterdam conservatory he also assembled Liquid Identities, a quintet of Calcagno, alto saxophonist José Soares, cellist Pau Sola, pianist Adrián Moncada and drummer Nick Thessalonikefs, who met as students. The band took second prize at the Keep an Eye International Contest in 2019, and its self-titled debut came out on Aut Records in 2020, the year the Musica Jazz Top Jazz poll named Calcagno best new Italian talent, a title shared with bassist Ferdinando Romano. He also won the 2020 Premio Internazionale Giorgio Gaslini, a prize named for Giorgio Gaslini; his own press page quotes Franco D'Andrea, from the Gaslini interview, calling him a "very special and original instrumentalist." Earlier, in 2019, he took the critics' award and second prize at the Concorso Internazionale Massimo Urbani, and in 2021 Nuova Generazione Jazz and further competition prizes followed, including a second prize at the Jazz Juniors contest in Kraków with The Dolphians and Tomorrow's Jazz in Venice with his trio Fade In.
Fade In is a free-leaning trio with double bassist Pietro Elia Barcellona and drummer Marco Luparia; its album Live Fast, Die A Legend came out on Portugal's Clean Feed label in 2022. In Milan he co-leads a second trio, Piranha, founded in the spring of 2017 with pianist Filippo Rinaldo and Stefano Grasso, who trade between piano and Octatrack, drums and vibraphone respectively while Calcagno alternates clarinet and bass clarinet. Piranha's albums are Piranha (2021) and All Ways (2024). In 2021 he also released Urlo d'Ebano, his first solo album, seven compositions scored for a septet of four clarinets and three bass clarinets that he recorded himself. A trio record with guitarist Javier Subatin and drummer Francesca Remigi, Confini Labili, followed in 2022.
His largest project is the Federico Calcagno Octet, which added trombonist Nabou Claerhout, vibraphonist Aleksander Sever and bassist Pedro Ivo Ferreira to the Liquid Identities core. Its album Mundus Inversus (Habitable Records, January 26, 2024) was recorded at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum in July 2023 with support from the Keep an Eye Foundation, and draws on Hieronymus Bosch and the tarot's Hanged Man card for a three-part suite of that name. The New Noise praised the balance between written and improvised passages, and Jazz in Family called it an "opera of hope." The Octet was nominated for Large Ensemble of the Year (International) at the 2025 Deutscher Jazzpreis, a category won that year by the Jihye Lee Orchestra.
Habitable Records, the independent label behind Piranha, Confini Labili, Mundus Inversus and ReLeVé Live, was founded in 2021 with Calcagno among its founder members. He teaches jazz ensemble and jazz clarinet at the Milan Conservatory, per his official biography.
As a sideman he appears on a run of contemporary-jazz records: Bernard van Rossum's Trampoline (2019), Tijn Wybenga's AM.OK big band on Live At Bimhuis (recorded in Amsterdam, April 29, 2019), Francesca Remigi's Archipélagos album Il Labirinto Dei Topi (2021), Francesco Orio's OS (2021) alongside Camilla Battaglia, the Tangent Quartet's Schema (2023), Ferdinando Romano's Invisible Painters (2023) with drummer Evita Polidoro, Escanzen's To Not Forget The Stars (AUAND, 2025) with Francesco Bearzatti and Alessandro Lanzoni among the guests, and Luca Zennaro's Stua scura (Caligola, 2026). Since 2023 he has also been the clarinetist in violinist Anaïs Drago's trio ReLeVé, heard on ReLeVé Live (Habitable Records, 2025), and she guests on Face the Music. His official biography also lists festival dates including North Sea Jazz, Cologne Jazz Week, Bergamo Jazz and Umbria Jazz Winter. In September 2022 the Gaudeamus Festival in Utrecht premiered his composition Eternal Rhythm by the New European Ensemble with B. C. Manjunath.
Calcagno describes his writing as a mix of creative, expressive jazz and postmodern classical music, with particular attention to rhythm, shaped by Carnatic music from South India and by African music. The Amsterdam records pair a chamber-like frontline of clarinet, alto saxophone and cello with that rhythmic writing, and reviewers of Mundus Inversus point to thematic melodies, irregular rhythms and abstract harmonies. His declared clarinet heroes are Eric Dolphy above all, plus Tony Scott, Buddy De Franco, Anat Cohen and Louis Sclavis. The bass clarinet is his main voice, and his solo album and the Fade In trio push it toward free improvisation, while Liquid Identities and the Octet sit closer to post-bop and avant-garde chamber jazz.
He has also spoken candidly about Italian jazz education and funding, arguing in a 2019 interview that thin institutional support and weak conservatory pedagogy have pushed jazz into niche status. He co-founded the independent label Habitable Records in 2021.
