Simone Alessandrini is a saxophonist and composer originally from San Felice Circeo, a coastal town in the province of Latina, Lazio, and based in Rome. Born in 1983, he grew up listening to Frank Zappa and the jazz of Ornette Coleman. He began studying saxophone at age ten and earned his diploma at the Ottorino Respighi Conservatory in Latina, later taking a degree in jazz at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. His early career was built in classical and contemporary music, performing as a soloist and in chamber ensembles, before he turned to jazz around age 25.
His recording debut was Indijazzsto (Barvin, 2013), a duo album with the accordionist Natalino Marchetti. In 2015 he founded Storytellers, a quintet built around original compositions that each tell a real or imagined story, with trumpeter Antonello Sorrentino, bassist Riccardo Gola and drummer Riccardo Gambatesa as its core rhythm section alongside rotating horn players. The group's self-titled debut, Storytellers (Parco della Musica Records, 2017), with Dan Kinzelman on tenor saxophone and clarinet, set stories of ordinary people during the Italian Resistance to music; it brought him a place among the top ten names in Musica Jazz magazine's 2018 Top Jazz poll for best emerging Italian talent. That year he also played in the Orchestra Nazionale Jazz Giovani Talenti, the national youth jazz orchestra directed by Paolo Damiani, appearing on its Oscene Rivolte (Parco della Musica Records, 2019).
As a sideman he recorded Good News (Emme Record Label, 2019) for guitarist Emmanuel Losio, and in 2020 played alto and soprano saxophone on bassist Ferdinando Romano's debut Totem (Losen Records), a septet session with the American trumpeter Ralph Alessi as featured guest, as well as on pianist Andrea Gomellini's The Gift (A.MA Records). In 2019 he also won AIR, an international call for an artistic residency in Cairo. Storytellers' second album, Mania Hotel (Parco della Musica Records, 2021) - built around the theme of madness and how history and society have shaped the lives of individuals confined for it - added guitarist Giacomo Ancillotto and tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Federico Pascucci to the band, and earned Alessandrini a second Top Jazz top-ten placing in the emerging-talent category. He rejoined Romano's group that year for the live album Totem Live @ Sile Jazz Festival (self-released via Bandcamp, 2021), and in 2021 co-founded the electronic music collective MASMAS with Simone Pappalardo and Mauro Remiddi; MASMAS went on to record the score for the documentary L'Avamposto, selected for the 2023 Venice Film Festival.
Further sideman credits followed: saxophone on singer-songwriter Emma Nolde's Dormi (Woodworm, 2022) and on Daniele Silvestri's Disco X (Epic/Sony Music, 2023), and alto/soprano saxophone on Emanuele Triglia's Moon Kin (Rivamare Records, 2024). In 2023, Musica Jazz's Top Jazz poll ranked Simone Alessandrini Storytellers among the year's best groups. The trilogy that began with Storytellers and Mania Hotel closed in 2024 with Circe (Parco della Musica Records), expanding the band to a twelve-piece ensemble and drawing on Giovan Battista Gelli's 1549 book of the same name, a dialogue-based reworking of Homer's Odyssey; Alessandrini plays alto saxophone and flutes in the role of Ulysses, alongside vocalist Laura Giavon as Circe and Federico Pascucci on tenor saxophone, clarinet and ney.
According to his Discogs artist profile, Alessandrini has also performed or recorded with Jim Porto, Antonio Ciacca, Rita Marcotulli, Fabio Zeppetella, Marcello Rosa, Javier Girotto, Roberto Gatto, Fabrizio Bosso, Marco Tiso, Sandy Muller, Badi Assad, Martha High, Stefano Rossini, Gianluca Persichetti, Mario Caroli, Guido Baggiani, Sean Friar and Lei Liang, and his Spotify artist biography adds Alessandro Mannarino, Enrico Pieranunzi, Francesco Bearzatti, Glen Velez, Mauro Refosco and Gianni Brezzo; none of these is tied to a specific, itemized release credit for Alessandrini in the Discogs database, so they are recorded here as documented biographical claims rather than verified collaborations. He also performs in duo with the harpist Marcella Carboni.
Alessandrini writes narrative, concept-driven suites in which each composition carries a story, real or invented, rather than working from a standard-tunes repertoire. He has described his own sound as three winds voiced in a New Orleans style but carrying the spirit and attack of rock, and names early twentieth-century classical music, the songwriting of Tom Waits and contemporary Northern European jazz groups such as Fire! Orchestra and Angles 9 among his influences, alongside his formative listening to Frank Zappa and Ornette Coleman. He has spoken of pursuing a deliberately naive approach, favoring raw, sincere ideas over a polished or formulaic aesthetic. That approach scales from the compact quintet writing of Storytellers and Mania Hotel to the large-ensemble, myth-based storytelling of Circe, a thirteen-track suite for twelve musicians that alternates dense orchestral writing with more minimal passages and open improvisation, built on cyclic, tribal rhythmic ideas.
