Paolino Dalla Porta was born on July 25, 1956, in Mantua, Italy. He started on classical guitar as a child, studying it for roughly a decade alongside contemporary composition, before switching to double bass in 1977. Within a few years he had moved to Milan and was working the city's jazz circuit, playing in the D.O.M. Alia Orchestra and joining trombonist Daniele Cavallanti and drummer Tiziano Tononi's newly founded Nexus in December 1980, a group whose records he continued to appear on into the 1980s alongside trombonist Luca Bonvini. He formed his own quartet in 1988, the year he also recorded Canguri Urbani (Splasc(h) Records) with accordionist Antonello Salis, saxophonist Sandro Satta and drummer Manhu Roche, and appeared for the first time on record with pianist Stefano Battaglia, on Battaglia's Auryn.
The Battaglia partnership became the defining relationship of Dalla Porta's first fifteen years on record: he appears on nine of Battaglia's albums between 1988 and 2002, including Confession (1991, with drummer Roberto Gatto), both volumes of Bill Evans Compositions (1993 and 1994, the first with drummer Aldo Romano), Tales (1993, Soul Note), Sulphur (1995, with English free improviser Tony Oxley), Triplicity (1995, with violinist Dominique Pifarely) and both volumes of The Book of Jazz (2000 and 2002, with drummer Fabrizio Sferra). Tales, credited jointly to Dalla Porta, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, Battaglia and drummer Bill Elgart, was recorded at Barigozzi Studio in Milan on May 28 and 29, 1993, and earned four stars from Down Beat magazine the following year, a rare American review of an Italian small-label date. The same period brought a parallel partnership with saxophonist Claudio Fasoli, whose Cities (RAM Records, 1993) paired Dalla Porta and Elgart with guitarist Mick Goodrick in a rhythm section Fasoli himself produced.
Through the 1990s and 2000s Dalla Porta worked across a wide range of Italian small-group jazz: quartet and quintet dates with saxophonist Tino Tracanna (Nudes, 1999), pianist Nico Morelli and saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano (Behind the Window, 1994), and a long-running duo and small-group partnership with guitarist Bebo Ferra that began in 1997 and produced Bagatelle (2001), Isole = Islands (2002, a trio with Oregon reedman Paul McCandless), Aria (2006), 3 of Visions (2014, with Sferra) and Frames of Crimson (2017, a King Crimson tribute with trombonist Gianluca Petrella). With Petrella and Sferra alone he also recorded the piano-less trio album Il Bagno Turco (2011, EGEA Music/Parco della Musica Records). He became a member of guitarist Bebo Ferra and trumpeter Paolo Fresu's circle more broadly through Fresu's Devil Quartet, playing acoustic bass alongside Ferra and drummer Stefano Bagnoli on Stanley Music! (2007, Blue Note), Desertico (2013), Carpe Diem (2018) and My Funny Valentine (2020, the latter three on Fresu's own Tǔk Music label).
Dalla Porta led or co-led his own groups throughout, recording Esperanto (1996, Splasc(h) Records) as a quintet leader with saxophonist Riccardo Luppi, Antonello Salis, drummer Massimo Manzi and Bebo Ferra, and later billing his own name alongside collaborators on Moonlanding (2016, with his Future Changes Quartet), Three Generations (2016, Alfa Music, a trio with pianist Enrico Intra and saxophonist Mattia Cigalini) and Tamayura (2020, Losen Records, with koto player Karin Nakagawa and guitarist Hans Tutzer). In 2025 Abeat Records released Minimal Duo, a trumpet-and-bass duo record with trumpeter Giovanni Falzone that the two had actually recorded in Milan back in 2012; the delay between recording and release runs through much of Dalla Porta's catalog, which favors small independent Italian labels (Splasc(h), EGEA, Abeat, Dischi Della Quercia) over major distribution. He also composed the scores for the film Domenica (2000) and the documentary Inge (2010), and was elected Italy's best jazz bassist by InSound magazine in 2008 and ranked first among Italian bassists in Musica Jazz's Top Jazz critics' poll the following year.
In March 2015 Dalla Porta succeeded founding member Glen Moore as the bassist of Oregon, the American chamber-jazz quartet led by guitarist and pianist Ralph Towner alongside reedman Paul McCandless. He made his recorded debut with the band on Lantern (2017, C.A.M. Jazz), credited alongside Towner, McCandless and drummer Mark Walker, and continued touring internationally with Oregon until Towner's death in Rome on January 18, 2026. He teaches jazz double bass at the Milan Conservatory (since 2006) and the Piacenza Conservatory (since 2014), is on the faculty of the Brescia Conservatory, and has led summer masterclasses at the Siena Jazz and Nuoro Jazz workshops, the former since 1999. Promotional artist biographies also credit him with collaborations alongside Pat Metheny, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley and Michel Petrucciani; none of these appear in his Discogs-documented release history, so they are noted here as unverified publicity claims rather than confirmed credits.
Dalla Porta works as a full-toned, melodically active accompanist across a genuinely wide stylistic range, from the interactive, classically inflected postbop trios and quartets of his long Stefano Battaglia partnership to the freer, more textural improvising of his dates with Tony Oxley, and on to the chamber-jazz aesthetic of Oregon, the American group he joined in 2015 to replace its founding bassist. His duo and small-group work with Bebo Ferra, running continuously since 1997, favors an intimate, largely acoustic sound built on melody and space rather than volume, a quality that also marks his 2025 trumpet-and-bass duo record with Giovanni Falzone, Minimal Duo. He has taught the instrument for two decades at Italian conservatories and summer jazz seminars, a role that runs alongside a still-active performing and recording career into his late sixties.
Identity confirmed via Discogs artist ID 673354 ("Paolino Dalla Porta," profile text "Italian jazz bassist, Born July 25, 1956 in Mantova (Mantua), Italy"). This is the sole Discogs entity for this artist; no other musician of the same name was found, so no collision or namesake risk applies. The full artist-release list runs to 147 entries: 29 as Main (own-name leader or co-billed), 113 as Appearance, and 5 as TrackAppearance on various-artist compilations.
Listen/Buy note: Spotify links were confirmed via direct search against title, artist and year; where no page could be confirmed the cell reads "not found." Buy links are plain, non-affiliate Amazon search links (no Amazon Associates tag has been set up for this vault).
Scope note on the sideman catalog: Dalla Porta's own biographies describe roughly 150 total recording credits. The 113 Appearance and 5 TrackAppearance credits below are listed in full, in chronological order with label and billing, as confirmed at the artist-credit level on Discogs; individually verifying a Spotify/Buy link for each of these 118 supporting-role credits was not performed given the volume, following the same proportionate approach used for other prolific Italian jazz sidemen in this project (see Furio Di Castri's discography-full.md). The 29 Main-billed releases below, where Dalla Porta is a leader or named co-leader, are given full Listen/Buy treatment.
