Pietro Tonolo is an Italian tenor and soprano saxophonist, composer and educator born May 30, 1959, in Mirano, a small town in the Veneto near Venice. He trained first as a classical violinist before switching to jazz saxophone and moving to Milan in 1979, where he worked with leading figures of the city's jazz scene including Franco D'Andrea, Luigi Bonafede, Gianni Cazzola, Larry Nocella and Massimo Urbani. He is the younger brother of pianist Marcello Tonolo; the two took piano lessons together as children in Mirano before Pietro moved to saxophone, and their first Discogs-documented studio collaboration, D.O.C. Denomination of Origin Controlled, came in 1987 on Marcello's own leader debut. They have recorded together at least six times since, most recently as co-leaders on the duo album Our Family Affair (2021, Caligola), whose title directly references their relationship.
From 1981 to 1986 Tonolo was a member of Enrico Rava's working quintet, documented on the live album Andanada (1983). In the summer of 1982 he joined the Gil Evans Orchestra, performing alongside Steve Lacy, Lew Soloff and Ray Anderson, a relationship that continued at New York's Sweet Basil club in 1984 and 1985 and at the Umbria Jazz Festival in 1987; this engagement is documented in multiple independent press and biographical sources but no Discogs release under Tonolo's own credits corresponds to it directly, so it is presented here as a well-attested but not individually session-verified connection. From 1999 to 2004 he held the tenor and soprano saxophone chair in Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, alongside fellow saxophonist Chris Cheek, guitarists Ben Monder and Steve Cardenas and bassist Anders Christensen, recorded on Europe (2001) and Holiday for Strings (2002); he also appears alongside Motian in a separate personnel configuration on pianist Enrico Pieranunzi's In That Dawn of Music (1993), and again on his own leader albums Portrait of Duke (2000) and Oltremare (2004).
Tonolo's own discography as a leader runs to more than 30 albums since his 1984 studio debut Quartet Quintet Sextet, recorded in Rome with pianist Rita Marcotulli, drummer Roberto Gatto, bassist Furio Di Castri and trumpeter Franco Piana. He and Marcotulli also recorded and toured through the 1980s as the co-billed Rita Marcotulli-Pietro Tonolo Quartet, documented on Umbria Jazz All Stars (1988). He co-led two full albums outright with pianist Luigi Bonafede, Glasswater (2001) and Peace (2007), and led the student big band Keptorchestra through sessions with guest soloists Steve Lacy (Sweet Sixteen, 1994) and Joe Lovano (Miss Etna, 1996). Later leader recordings turned toward American collaborators based in Europe, including pianist Gil Goldstein and bassist Steve Swallow (Portrait of Duke, 2000; Farfalle, 2002; Italian Songs, 2005; Mirando, 2009) and drummer Joe Chambers (Alliance, 1993; Italian Songs, 2005; The Translators, 2009; Passport, 2012). In 2015 he stepped outside jazz repertoire for Seasons and Mid-Seasons (Decca), a saxophone-and-orchestra reworking of Vivaldi's Four Seasons recorded with violinist Sonig Tchakerian and the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.
He teaches saxophone at the Conservatory of Vicenza and is a regular faculty member of the Siena Jazz international summer workshops, and lives in Vicenza.
Tonolo is a mainstream and post-bop rooted saxophonist whose long list of working associations - Enrico Rava's quintet, the Gil Evans Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band - places him inside the lineage of Italian musicians who built careers as first-call collaborators for major American bandleaders touring or recording in Europe, while also maintaining an extensive career as a leader in his own right. His discography shows a recurring interest in American songbook and jazz-repertory reinterpretation delivered in a chamber-scaled, melodically direct voice on tenor and soprano saxophone: full-album readings of Duke Ellington (Portrait of Duke, 2000) and, later, an entire album of Vivaldi (Seasons and Mid-Seasons, 2015) sit alongside original-composition dates and the two co-led records with Luigi Bonafede. His long professional partnership with his brother, pianist Marcello Tonolo, runs in parallel across four decades without either brother's discography subsuming the other's.
Identity: Discogs artist 1076258, Pietro Tonolo, profile text "Italian jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger, born May 30, 1959 in Milano, Italy" (independent sources - Wikipedia, AllMusic - give his birthplace as Mirano, near Venice, matching his brother Marcello Tonolo's own documented birthplace; see notes.md). Name variations "P. Tonolo," "P.Tonolo," "Tonolo." Discogs lists 148 releases under his personal artist ID: 40 as main artist, 96 as an appearance and 12 as a track appearance. Distinguished throughout from his older brother, pianist Marcello Tonolo (Discogs artist 2117404), whose own credits ("Marcello Tonolo") are never counted here as Pietro's.

This Discogs "Main" credit is a large jazz-orchestra recording (over 20 musicians, full saxophone/trombone/trumpet sections plus rhythm) led by Gerardo Iacoucci, not a various-artists compilation of separate acts; Tonolo and Rosario Giuliani are both credited in the same reed section on the same release. This differs from the ambiguous case below (Note Necessarie), where a large cast is spread across multiple, apparently separately-recorded tracks under different sub-groupings.
Tonolo carries a confirmed Discogs "Appearance" credit (tenor saxophone) on Note Necessarie (2004, Minimum Fax), a tribute album of Enrico Rava compositions performed by a very large rotating cast, including Lee Konitz, Franco D'Andrea, Stefano Bollani, Giovanni Tommaso, Roberto Gatto, Aldo Romano, Gianluigi Trovesi, Bruno Tommaso, Gianluca Petrella and Roswell Rudd among many others. Discogs does not itemize per-track credits for this release, and the number of different drummers, bassists and pianists credited strongly suggests separate small-group sessions gathered under one album banner rather than one ensemble playing together throughout. This release is therefore treated here only as a confirmed connection to Enrico Rava (whose compositions it performs, and who Tonolo already worked directly for as a quintet member 1981-1986) and is not used as the basis for any other cross-link in this profile, consistent with this vault's standing caution around aggregate compilation credits (see the Gianni Cazzola / Luigi Bonafede Italian Repertory anomaly documented in those artists' own files).
Bio-only, not turned into reciprocal cross-links: multiple independent sources (Wikipedia, All About Jazz, contemporary press) describe Tonolo working in Milan from 1979 with Franco D'Andrea and Larry Nocella, and playing in the Gil Evans Orchestra in 1982 alongside musicians including Chet Baker, Kenny Clarke, Lee Konitz, Roswell Rudd and Kenny Wheeler; none of these specific pairings could be confirmed at the Discogs extraartists level under Tonolo's own credits, so they are presented here as attested biographical claims rather than verified session credits.
Riccardo Zegna (piano) - on Alliance (1993), Piccolo Valzer (2001), Barcarola (2002), Simbiosi (1995), Disguise (1997), Oltremare (2004), In a Sentimental Jazz (2022) and the Massimo Urbani Quintet's 30 (2023), Zegna's most frequent recording partner. Profiled separately on this site.
Roberto Rossi (trombone) - seven shared sessions, 1991-2013, including Alliance (1993), Disguise (1997), Luna Park (2000), Lennie's Pennies (2006), Orbit (2007) and Dajaloo (2013).
Sandro Gibellini (guitar) - a collaborator since they met as young musicians in 1979; fellow sideman on his own Quartet Quintet Sextet (1984), the Reunion quintet's Flight Charts And Plans (1989) and the Keptorchestra's Sweet Sixteen (1994) with Steve Lacy. Profiled separately on this site.
