Domenico Sanna was born in Gaeta, on Italy's western coast between Rome and Naples, on September 4, 1984, and started piano lessons at six. He moved to Rome in the early 2000s to study jazz piano at the city's Università della Musica, graduating with highest honors in 2007 after an invitation, in 2004, to play Milan's Blue Note with Fabio Mariani's ensemble and a 2005 Global Music Foundation scholarship that took him to the Seminar of All Musics in Certaldo.

The recognition came fast once he graduated. In 2007, judged by a panel that included Benny Golson, George Cables and Bobby Durham, he won Best Pianist at the Jimmy Woody competition in Soriano nel Cimino, the event behind the Tuscia in Jazz festival. The following year he took the festival's "Luca Flores" award for best soloist and an "Emerging Talent" citation from the Armonia Foundation of Arts. By his own account, 2008 was also the year he joined saxophonist Stefano Di Battista's band and recorded on the Universal/EmArcy album Più Sole (2009) with Di Battista and singer Nicky Nicolai - though Discogs's own credit data for that release names Rita Marcotulli as the pianist on its one track that lists an instrumentalist, and does not otherwise itemize a keyboard chair; see domenico-sanna_notes.md for the full account of what could and could not be verified.

What is fully documented is his 2010 leader debut, Too Marvelous For Words (Tosky Records), a standards-and-originals trio session with bassist Giorgio Rosciglione and drummer Marco Valeri that happened to be the very first release on the newly founded Rome label. Sanna also says he recorded One Night with saxophonist Dave Liebman for the Tuscia in Jazz label around the same period, a release not found in Discogs's database and not independently confirmed for this profile.

From there his catalog runs two parallel tracks: an Italian one, and a recurring return to New York. In November 2013 he cut Brooklyn Beat! at the Bunker Studio in Brooklyn with bassist Ameen Saleem - a regular in Roy Hargrove's bands - and drummer Dana Hawkins, released the following year on Jando Music. The same year, back in Italy, he played piano on the Andrea Molinari Quintet's L'Era Dell'Acquario (2014) alongside American alto saxophonist Logan Richardson. Rome's Albore Jazz label then carried him through a run of co-billed small-group records: the duo Just You, Just Me (2015) with bassist Giuseppe Bassi, and the trio Ciao... Amore (2018) adding saxophonist Max Ionata. A separate 2018 trio date, Back And Forth (AMP Music & Records), paired him with Swedish drummer Anders Thorén and British bassist Tim Thornton.

That same year brought his most prominent sideman credit: piano and keyboards on Franco Ambrosetti's orchestral The Nearness Of You (2018, Unit Records), a session led by the veteran Swiss-Italian flugelhornist and built around string and horn sections conducted by Massimo Nunzi and Tonino Battista, with drummer Gregory Hutchinson and Ameen Saleem again in the rhythm section. Since 2020, Sanna has also been a recurring "featuring" credit alongside bassist Dario Rosciglione on a string of Irma Records vocal-jazz compilation tracks - "Angel Eyes" (2020), "Close To You" (2022) and "Fly Me To The Moon" (2024) among them - a low-profile but genuinely repeated studio partnership documented at the individual-track level on Discogs.

The 2020s have kept both threads going. Saxophonist Daniele Germani's What Reason Could I Give (2021, Fresh Sound New Talent), reviewed in Jazz Journal, put him on piano alongside American bassist Joe Sanders. In 2024 he composed "The Light Around The Corner" and played piano on GeGè Telesforo's Big Mama Legacy (Ropeadope) - an album that also credits Danilo Rea on piano, without Discogs specifying which of the two plays which of the record's other tracks. The same year he reunited with Saleem and Hutchinson as a trio for Music Is The Answer (Fresh Sound Records), recorded at Rome's Extrabeat Studio in April 2023 and built around originals plus covers of Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Darn That Dream"; the record is not yet indexed on Discogs but is documented across Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music. Most recently, he plays piano on "Terra Em Transe," one half of Nicola Conte's 2026 Far Out Recordings 7-inch, alongside bassist Ameen Saleem, drummer Teppo Mäkynen and multi-instrumentalist Magnus Lindgren.

Sanna remains active as a solo performer, too: on April 19, 2026, he gave a solo piano recital, "Un racconto in bianco e nero" ("A Tale in Black and White"), at Rome's Casa del Jazz, reworking American jazz piano repertoire from what the venue's own program described as a modern European perspective.

Sanna's own catalog sits inside the mainstream jazz piano-trio tradition Tosky Records itself filed his debut under, built on a standards repertoire (Gershwin, George Shearing, Frank Loesser-era songbook writers) alongside originals. Brooklyn Beat! pushed that base toward a heavier backbeat and R&B-inflected groove, a "search for the beat" the label's own promotional description traces back to jazz's rhythmic origins rather than away from them. His two most visible international sideman dates - Franco Ambrosetti's string-and-horn The Nearness Of You and the two trio albums with Ameen Saleem and Gregory Hutchinson - place him inside a working postwar-American rhythm-section language, while his recurring "featuring" spot on Dario Rosciglione's Irma Records vocal-jazz sessions and his 2026 date with Nicola Conte connect him to Italy's separate lounge and nu-jazz-adjacent scene. The solo recital repertoire he's been touring since at least 2026, built entirely around American piano masters, is the clearest statement of where his own sympathies sit.
