Stefano D'Anna is a Palermo-born tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer who has spent more than four decades at the center of the Italian jazz scene, first as a prize-winning young soloist and later as a conservatory professor. He turned professional in the early 1980s and in 1984 joined the Brass Group Big Band in Palermo, directed by Ignazio Garsia, a seat that put him under the baton of a rotating cast of visiting jazz names including Bob Brookmeyer, Gil Evans, Mel Lewis, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Francy Boland, Ernie Wilkins and Carla Bley, according to his own biography on Jazzitalia.
D'Anna's breakthrough came in 1991, when he recorded his debut as a leader, Leapin' In, in an unusual pianoless trio with bassist Enzo Pietropaoli and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. The album was released by Splasc(h) Records in 1992 (reissued in 2015) and drew strong reviews in Italy and abroad; The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it its top four-star rating. The same year, Musica Jazz magazine's annual "Top Jazz" critics' poll voted D'Anna the Best New Talent. He followed with Carousel (1998, Splasc(h) Records), a quartet date with guitarist Fabio Zeppetella, bassist Pietro Ciancaglini and drummer Roberto Gatto, which Basimedia Magazine named Best Italian Jazz CD of the year and which also earned a Penguin Guide rating. Runa (2004, Splasc(h) Records), a trio recording, received three and a half stars in the Penguin Guide's seventh edition.
He continued to record steadily through the 2000s: A19 (2008, Splasc(h) Records) paired him in duo with pianist Mauro Schiavone, and Soundscape (2013, Sardmusic), billed to the Stefano D'Anna Quartet, featured guitarist Enrico Bracco, bassist Matteo Marongiu and drummer Gianrico Manca. A later album, Variations on Standard Songs and Other Works (2020), is confirmed on his Spotify and Apple Music artist pages but is not yet catalogued on Discogs.
Alongside his own leader dates, D'Anna built an extensive career as a sideman, appearing on record with Lanfranco Malaguti, Enrico Pieranunzi (as a member of the Enrico Pieranunzi Quintet and on the title track of In That Dawn of Music, 1993), Luca Flores and Fabrizio Bosso, among others documented below. He has also performed and recorded with a long list of other musicians by his own account, including JoAnne Brackeen, Sheila Jordan, Norma Winstone, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard, Stefano Bollani, Stefano Battaglia, Giovanni Tommaso, Dario Deidda, Pietro Condorelli, Ares Tavolazzi, Paolino Dalla Porta and Sandro Gibellini; these are self-reported career connections from his own biography and conservatory curriculum vitae, not independently confirmed at the Discogs credit level for every name, and are not treated as verified cross-links.
Since the 2010-11 academic year D'Anna has held a jazz saxophone professorship at Italian conservatories: first at the Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Conservatory in Cagliari (2010-2014), then at the Luca Marenzio Conservatory in Brescia (2015-2019), and again at the Cagliari conservatory from the 2019-20 academic year to the present.
D'Anna's recorded output favors small, piano-optional combinations built around his tenor and soprano sound: the pianoless sax-bass-drums trio of Leapin' In, the guitar quartet of Carousel, and the sax-piano duo of A19 all strip the harmonic instrument down or out, putting the compositional and improvisational weight on his horn. His discography sits in the mainstream post-bop lineage that the Penguin Guide repeatedly singled out for praise, informed by an early apprenticeship in Sicily's Brass Group Big Band under a succession of internationally known guest conductors. Alongside his performing career, he has spent more than a decade as a conservatory-level jazz educator, a role that has run in parallel with his recording and touring work rather than replacing it.
Verified against the live Discogs API, artist ID 1530138. Leader releases are listed in full; sideman and group-appearance credits are listed in full as well, since D'Anna's complete Discogs relationship list (26 releases) is manageable in its entirety.
