Roberto Magris (piano), pictured on the cover of *Suite!*, his 2019 two-disc album for JMood Records. Not Creative Commons - album cover art, rights held by JMood Records. No CC-licensed or public-domain photograph of Roberto Magris was found on Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata (no P18 image set), or elsewhere; a Wikimedia Commons search for "Roberto Magris" returned zero results, and no Flickr or other CC-marked image could be located either. This album cover is used as the disclosed non-CC fallback per this project's standing rule. The cover photo is a solo headshot printed directly beside Magris's name with no other musician pictured, so identification is unambiguous (the other names listed on the cover, Mark Colby, Eric Jacobson, Eric Hochberg, Greg Artry and PJ Aubree Collins, are sidemen credited in text only, not shown in the photo). — JMood Records (Bandcamp) - https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3542925042_10.jpg
Roberto Magris is a pianist, composer and arranger born June 19, 1959, in Trieste, the Italian port city on the border with Slovenia. He took piano lessons between the ages of four and sixteen, and his path toward jazz specifically traces to a single record: hearing Oscar Peterson's The Way I Really Play in 1977 turned him toward the music full time.
He came up through Trieste's jazz scene in the late 1970s and led the trio Gruppo Jazz Marca through the 1980s, recording Comunicazione Sonora (1981), Aria di Citta (1983) and Mitteleuropa (1985). In 1987 he founded an Italian quartet that toured for close to twenty years across Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. Alongside that group he kept a parallel line of session and project work through the 1990s: the sextet date Life in Israel (1990, Jazzis Records, credited to the Roberto Magris Israsextet) with saxophonist Marco Castelli and drummer Davide Ragazzoni, Music Of Today (1990, Splasc(h) Records, credited to Roberto Magris and The D.I. Project) and the quartet session Maliblues (1994, Lush Tales), again with Castelli. In the 1990s he also founded the acid-jazz groups DMA Urban Jazz Funk and Alfabeats Nu Jazz; Castelli played saxophone and Magris played keyboards and piano across DMA's Discogs-verified lineup, documented on the compilation Dma - Urban Jazz Funk (2000) and the album Up To The Beat (undated on Discogs, mid-2000s per the artist's own account).
In 1998 Magris formed the Europlane Orchestra, a large ensemble sponsored by the Central European Initiative drawing on musicians from across the region, recording Live At Zoo Est (1999), Plays Kurt Weill (2000) and, a decade on, Current Views (2009, Soul Note), an international date pairing Magris with players from Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Belgium, including guitarist Philip Catherine and, again, Marco Castelli on soprano saxophone. In 2005 he produced and played on Check-In with Hungarian saxophonist Tony Lakatos (Soul Note), and in 2006 he recorded the trio album Il Bello Del Jazz for Soul Note with alto saxophonist Herb Geller as a guest.
2006 is also the year Magris shifted the center of his working life to the United States, becoming the musical director and lead recording artist of JMood Records, a Kansas City jazz label. He has recorded close to twenty albums for JMood since, opening with Kansas City Outbound (2007) alongside bassist Art Davis, and continuing through sideman dates that brought him into the studio with drummers Idris Muhammad (Mating Call, 2010) and Albert "Tootie" Heath (Morgan Rewind: A Tribute To Lee Morgan Vol. 1, 2011), and reed player Ira Sullivan (Sun Stone, 2018). His own-name JMood leader catalog runs from Enigmatix (2015) through World Gardens (2018), Suite! (2019, a two-disc set with saxophonist Mark Colby), Shuffling Ivories (2021), High Quote (2023), Love Is Passing Thru (2024), Lovely Day(s) and In Action (both 2025), and Live In Hollywood, recorded with Art Davis again on bass and Tony Lakatos on tenor saxophone and released in 2026.
Magris has not abandoned his European ties while based in the United States. He began performing with the Prague-based MUH Trio from 2016, and in 2024 he reunited the Europlane Orchestra after a twenty-year gap for Freedom Is Peace, a live sextet recording. September 2026 brought a cluster of five simultaneous JMood releases marking the label's twentieth anniversary with Magris as its central artist.
Magris names Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan, Bill Evans, Kenny Drew, Jaki Byard, Randy Weston, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Hill, Paul Bley, Don Pullen and Steve Kuhn as his most admired models, a list that spans hard bop's lyrical mainstream (Kelly, Flanagan) and its more exploratory edges (Hill, Bley, Pullen). That range shows up in his own work: hard-bop and post-bop trio and quartet records sit alongside large-ensemble writing for the Europlane Orchestra and, for a stretch in the 1990s, electric acid-jazz work with DMA Urban Jazz Funk. Critic Ira Gitler described him as a pianist with "a quick, supple right hand and rich harmonies," and Scott Yanow credited him with the ability to "invigorate the jazz modern mainstream" rather than simply replay it.
Identity: Discogs artist 1443047, Roberto Magris, profile "Italian jazz pianist, Born June 19, 1959 in Triest, Italy," name variations "Magris," "R. Magris," "Robert Magris Y Dma." His own working groups and bands (Gruppo Jazz Marca, Roberto Magris Israsextet, Roberto Magris Sextet, Roberto Magris Quintet, Roberto Magris Trio, Roberto Magris Quartet, The Europlane Orchestra/Roberto Magris Europlane, The D.I. Project, The Muh Trio) are separate Discogs entities aggregated under his artist page and treated here as his own credits. Discogs lists 37 releases under this entity. Every credit below is checked at the extraartists and release-artist level under artist ID 1443047.
Listen/Buy note: "Listen" links go to Spotify where a page was confirmed to match the title, artist and format; where none was found the cell reads "not found." "Buy" links are plain, non-affiliate Amazon search links (no Amazon Associates tag has been set up for this vault).
Several releases below are tagged "Appearance" rather than "Main" in Discogs' own artist-level role field because they are billed to a Magris-led group name (Gruppo Jazz Marca, Roberto Magris Israsextet, Roberto Magris Quintet, Roberto Magris Sextet, The Europlane Orchestra, The Muh Trio) rather than to his personal artist credit; all are his own working bands or co-leaderships and are listed here as Leader/Co-Leader dates, matching this vault's treatment of the same Discogs quirk on other artists' pages.

Wikipedia states Magris "founded the acid-jazz groups DMA Urban Jazz Funk and Alfabeats Nu Jazz" in the 1990s, "recording two albums, Up to the Beat (2003) and Stones (2006)." The DMA side of this is Discogs-confirmed above (Magris on keyboards/organ/piano alongside Marco Castelli on saxophone, on both the 2000 compilation and Up To The Beat). Discogs has no entity for "Alfabeats Nu Jazz" and no listing for a 2006 album called Stones under Magris's artist ID; both are reported here as bio-claimed only, not independently Discogs-verified.
