Dario Chiazzolino was born in Turin on February 8, 1985, and began playing guitar professionally at 14, working the city's blues and progressive-rock circuits before a high-school discovery of Charlie Parker turned him toward jazz. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies with top honors from the Turin State "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory, then a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from the Rome University of Music. At 21, in 2006, he won first prize for guitar at the Umbria Jazz Festival, the award his later biographies consistently point to as the start of his international career.

His discography as a leader runs back to 2012's Rewriting Songs, a duo record with guitarist Nico Di Battista reinterpreting Italian traditional songs in a jazz idiom, and 2013's Confidence, made with Cuban bassist Dany Noel and blending Italian and Cuban material. Paint Your Life (recorded 2011, released December 2013, Tukool Records) put him in a trio with pianist Taylor Eigsti, bassist Marco Panascia, and drummer Willie Jones III, and drew a three-star review from Jazzwise. The most striking of his early leader dates is Lost in the Jungle (2014, Tukool Records), which crosses paths with the Yellowjackets more directly than the "collaborated with" line in his own bios suggests: the session credits saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, and bassist Jimmy Haslip alongside drummer Gianni Branca, putting three of the band's four core members on Chiazzolino's own leader record. Red Cloud (2016, Tukool Records) followed, a trio session with fellow Italian pianist Antonio Faraò, French bassist Dominique Di Piazza, and drummer Manhu Roche, Discogs-verified and already profiled on this project. The Ninth Gig (2018, Believe Digital) billed him alongside organist Mecco Guidi and drummer Michele Iaia as the New Generation Trio.

Chiazzolino relocated permanently to New York in 2016, the same year he joined Spirit Fingers, a jazz-fusion quartet led by pianist Greg Spero with bassist Hadrien Féraud and drummer Michael Mitchell. Their self-titled debut, recorded at Spero's Tiny Room Studio in Los Angeles and released by Shanachie Records on March 16, 2018, was co-produced with drummer-producer Makaya McCraven and reached number 11 on the iTunes Jazz chart and number 20 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. The follow-up, Peace (Ropeadope, released June 12, 2020), was produced by Spero and McCraven together, added bassist Max Gerl in place of Féraud, and brought in guest vocalist Judi Jackson, saxophonist Greg Ward, trumpeter Bubby Lewis, and steel-pannist Jonathan Scales. Chiazzolino's own official discography page lists a further run of leader and co-led releases into 2025 (Piano & Guitar Improvisation with Spero, 2020; I Am Ready and its full-length follow-up The Abstrucks, a trio with bassist Federico Malaman and drummer Maxx Furian, 2023-2024; Dam Mast Calandar with the Spirit Fingers lineup and Mystical with saxophonist Dayna Stephens' Inner District quartet, both 2025), none of which are yet indexed on Discogs; see discography-full.md for the full accounting of what is Discogs-verified versus self-reported.

Recognition followed the records: Best Jazz Guitarist from Italian Jazz Magazine's critics poll in 2011, Artist of the Year from D-Magazine's critics poll in 2013, a Best Guitarist honor from Guitarist Magazine in 2015, Best Jazz Album (for the Spirit Fingers debut) from Soul and Jazz Magazine in 2018, and, in 2019, Jazz Guitar Magazine's Best Jazz Guitarist of the Century award. He received the Louis Armstrong Foundation Award in 2020. D'Angelico Guitars named him a worldwide brand ambassador in April 2018, and he performs on their Excel SS model. He now teaches as a Lecturer in Music and Art at CUNY's Borough of Manhattan Community College, alongside posts at the Long Island Conservatory of Music, Long Island City Music Academy, the Music Conservatory of Westchester, and Long Island University's Roc Nation School of Music, and has authored instructional material on jazz improvisation.

His sideman work runs in parallel: he guested on vocalist Chiara Raggi's Disordine (2015) and La Natura E La Pazienza (2020), and appears on a run of 2023 singles from pianist Greg Spero's Tiny Records circle alongside trumpeter Keyon Harrold and drummer Terreon Gully.

Chiazzolino's playing bridges two distinct lanes: a straight-ahead, harmonically fluent post-bop language built on the American mainstream tradition (the Eigsti trio, the Yellowjackets-adjacent Lost in the Jungle), and the electric jazz-fusion vocabulary he shares with pianist Greg Spero in Spirit Fingers, a band press coverage places in the lineage of 1970s fusion updated with electronics, hip-hop, and contemporary pop production. His earlier records also show a recurring pull toward Italian and Latin material specifically: Rewriting Songs reworks Italian traditional songs through a jazz lens, and Confidence pairs him with a Cuban bassist for a session built on Italian-Cuban fusion. Press description leans heavily on his technique and harmonic vocabulary; Billboard has called him "one of the greatest guitarists today," and JazzTimes has said he has "taken the guitar to a superior technical, improvisational, and narrative level."
