Franco Manzecchi was born Gian Franco Manzecchi in Ravenna on September 10, 1931, and died in Konstanz, on Lake Constance in southern Germany, on March 25, 1979, at the age of 47. He was an Italian drummer who spent his working life abroad, and above all in Paris, where he settled in 1957 and became one of the city's busiest rhythm-section players through the 1960s. The Ravenna Jazz festival's own program note for its 2019 concert in his memory calls him a protagonist of a golden moment of European jazz.

According to German Wikipedia, he learned dance-band drumming from his older brother Gino starting in 1945, with a strong interest in swing, and discovered bebop in 1949. He moved to Bologna the following year, then worked in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and in Vienna, where he is said to have played with Fatty George's group alongside Karl Drewo and Oscar Klein. He arrived in Paris in early 1957, by English Wikipedia's account almost by chance, and stayed for two decades.

The recordings that survive show how wide his Paris work ran. On May 2, 1964 he was the drummer in Chet Baker's quintet for a Belgian radio and television session in Brussels, with Jacques Pelzer on alto saxophone, René Urtreger on piano and Luigi Trussardi on bass; it was issued in 1992 as Brussels 1964. Six weeks later, on June 11, 1964, he played on Eric Dolphy's last Paris recordings, alongside Donald Byrd, Nathan Davis and Jack Diéval, including "Naima," "Ode To Charlie Parker," "Springtime" and "245." In 1964 and 1965 he was the drummer on some of the French radio sessions later collected as Larry Young's In Paris: The ORTF Recordings (Resonance, 2016). In June 1969 he recorded the Mal Waldron trio album Ursula in Paris with bassist Patrice Caratini, and in June of that same year he was in the European big band that Clark Terry fronted at the Montreux Jazz Festival, with Ernie Wilkins arranging.

A large part of his catalog is with French saxophonist Michel Roques. Discogs credits him with the Michel Roques Trio's Dédicace (1966), Safari (1969, which Discogs notes as winning the Prix Django Reinhardt in 1969) and Chorus (1972), and with Roques's Boris Vian stage project En Avant La Zizique. He also recorded for the pianist Jack Diéval, the guitarist René Thomas, the tenor saxophonist Guy Lafitte, the organist Lou Bennett, the violinist Stuff Smith, the guitarist Jean Bonal and, in 1966, on André Hodeir's jazz cantata Anna Livia Plurabelle. Discogs also lists an uncredited drum part on a record by the orchestra of Stéphane Grappelli and Géo Daly. In May 1968 he traveled to Milan to record Free And Loose with saxophonist Eraldo Volonté and trombonist Dino Piana, the free-jazz LP whose liner note places him and bassist Benoît Charvet in Paris during the unrest of that spring.

German Wikipedia adds a longer list of Paris associations that Discogs does not itemize: Tony Scott, Bill Coleman, Mezz Mezzrow, Don Byas, Bud Powell, Pierre Michelot, Lucky Thompson (on a tour of Italy), Memphis Slim, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson, Teddy Wilson and Barney Kessel. A page from the drum maker Trixon places him in Paris in 1959 with Bud Powell, guitarist Jimmy Gourley and bassist Pierre Michelot at the Blue Note. These are biographical claims rather than Discogs-verified credits.

After heart surgery in 1976 he had to cut back his playing, and he retired to the Lake Constance area with his German wife Mimi and their son Patrick, who became a well-regarded jazz drummer in Germany. He did not stop entirely. His last studio record, Organ, was made in Paris in June 1978 with organist Patrice Galas and guitarist Marc Fosset, billed to all three names; Discogs credits him as composer of one track, "Francovalse." On November 11, 1978 he was recorded live at the Restaurant Seekuh in Konstanz with pianist Francis David, vibraphonist Ghislain Muller, bassist Georges Cohen and conga player Freddy Sargeant; that tape stayed unreleased until Ladwig Jazz Records issued it as Hommage in 2021 to mark what would have been his 90th birthday. Weeks before his death the newly founded Jazzclub Konstanz made him an honorary member, per German Wikipedia.

He is remembered in Ravenna. On May 11, 2019, on the 40th anniversary of his death, Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano and Jan Lundgren dedicated their Mare Nostrum trio concert at the Teatro Alighieri to him during the Ravenna Jazz festival.

German Wikipedia's assessment describes a drummer of the French scene who is now almost forgotten but whose contribution to European modern jazz in the 1960s should not be underestimated: a fine, supple touch on the cymbals, melodic solos with elegance and swing, and a reputation as a sideman valued by his colleagues. It reports that Memphis Slim and Johnny Griffin named him their favorite drummer in Europe, that Kenny Clarke recommended him to Bud Powell, that Art Blakey gave him a hi-hat, that Elvin Jones arranged a memorial concert, and that Max Roach was a longtime friend whose ideas he drew on. These are anecdotes from that article, not credits documented elsewhere.

The records themselves show a bebop-rooted drummer equally at ease in three settings. In the Baker, Diéval and Lafitte sessions he is a swinging small-group timekeeper. With Michel Roques, Eraldo Volonté and Eric Dolphy he plays in the modal and free-leaning idiom that Discogs tags as Hard Bop, Free Jazz and Post-Bop. On the Montreux date he drives a 17-piece horn section arranged by Ernie Wilkins. His son Patrick Manzecchi, also a jazz drummer, co-produced the 2021 Hommage release.
