Enrico Pieranunzi was twenty-six, working as a music professor, when he walked away from the job in 1975 to play jazz full time. He cut his first album as leader that same year, a solo piano record called The Day After the Silence (Edipan, 1976). More than seventy albums later, he's still the pianist Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, and Marc Johnson all chose to record with more than once.

Born in Rome, Pieranunzi grew up around the music before he chose it: his father, Alvaro Pieranunzi, played guitar in the local jazz scene, and Enrico began studying piano at age five. He trained classically on piano and stayed inside that world long enough to hold his own professorship, from 1973 to 1975 at a conservatory in Frosinone, before deciding the classroom wasn't where he belonged.

The classical training never left him. In 2011 he recorded Works and Improvisations: 1685 (CAM Jazz), a solo album built entirely on jazz interpretations of Domenico Scarlatti, Bach, and Handel — Pieranunzi sitting at the piano and improvising directly on the source material rather than simply covering it.

That combination, classical rigor married to jazz instinct, is what kept pulling American rhythm sections back to him. Bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron built a working trio with him that ran from New Lands (recorded 1984, Timeless) through Deep Down (recorded February 1986, released 1987, Soul Note). Drummer Paul Motian chose Pieranunzi as a trio partner three separate times, with three different lineups: Untold Story (1994, with Marc Johnson), Doorways (2004, with Chris Potter), and Special Encounter (2005, with Charlie Haden). Nobody books the same pianist three times across three different bands by accident.

Pieranunzi also crossed paths early with trumpeter Paolo Fresu: both appear as featured soloists on the 1992 big-band session Great News From Italy (YVP Music), years before either one became a fixture of the international festival circuit. He also worked repeatedly with fellow Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava — the duo record Nausicaa (1994, Quadrivium) and the group session Bella (1994, Philology) both pair the two, and decades later the two Enricos reunited on I 3 Enrichi (2020, with Enrico Intra).

Beyond his own trio work, Pieranunzi built a substantial career as a first-call sideman: he recorded with Chet Baker (Soft Journey, 1980; The Heart of the Ballad, 1988), Lee Konitz (Solitudes, 1988), Charlie Haden (Silence, 1989; First Song, 1992), and Phil Woods (Elsa, 1998).

Away from the piano, Pieranunzi is also a published author on his own primary influence: his 2001 Italian-language book on Bill Evans was translated into English in 2004 as Bill Evans: The Pianist as an Artist (Continuum Books).

The recognition followed the work rather than announcing it in advance: Musica Jazz's critics' poll named him Artist of the Year in both 2003 and 2008, France awarded him the Django d'Or for Best European Musician in 1997, and Germany's Echo Jazz named him Best International Keyboard Artist in 2014.

Pieranunzi's playing sits in the harmonic lineage of Bill Evans — a connection close enough that he wrote the book on it, literally, in Bill Evans: The Pianist as an Artist. But the description undersells him: critics who track that lineage generally credit Pieranunzi with a rare individuality inside it, built on a classically-trained sense of line and touch rather than imitation. That classical foundation surfaces most explicitly on records like Works and Improvisations: 1685, where Baroque repertoire (Bach, Handel, Scarlatti) becomes raw material for jazz improvisation rather than a straight recital.

His catalog runs in two clear directions: a long-running trio practice (with Marc Johnson and Joey Baron in the 1980s, then repeatedly with Paul Motian in the 1990s and 2000s) built on close, conversational interplay, and a parallel classical-crossover strand — solo Baroque reinterpretations, chamber collaborations, and film-score-adjacent work — that treats the European classical tradition as a genuine second home rather than a novelty detour.
