Daniele Tittarelli was born in Rome on 17 October 1975. His interest in wind instruments began at a concert at the Teatro Tenda in Piazza Mancini, Rome, where he first heard a live alto saxophone; he enrolled at the Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio, studying under maestro Roberto Mancini and playing in the school's own band. He went on to attend seminars with Sal Nistico, Joe Zawinul, Nicola Stilo, Dave Liebman and Gary Burton at Umbria Jazz, and graduated from the Conservatorio di Perugia "Francesco Morlacchi" in 1999.

His early ensemble work included Paolo Damiani's IS Ensemble - a twenty-piece national youth jazz orchestra, documented on its self-titled 1996 album for Via Veneto Jazz - as well as groups led by Mario Raja, Marco Tiso, Bruno Tommaso and Massimo Nunzi's Trombe Rosse. In 1998, his quartet Zuky 4et won first prize at both the San Gemini and Barga festivals. In 2000 he won the Best Soloist award at the Avignon Jazz Festival's Tremplin Jazz competition, performing with his own Garbatella's Dream Trio.

Tittarelli's debut as a leader, Jungle Trane (2002, Wide Sound), carried liner notes from drummer Roberto Gatto, marking the start of a long-running collaboration; the album toured festivals including Padova, Roccella Jonica and the Brianza Open Jazz Festival. In 2005 he represented Italian jazz at the New York Festival with Gatto's quintet (alongside Claudio Filippini, Ares Tavolazzi and Roberto Rossi), and that same year debuted with the Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra (PMJO) under Maurizio Giammarco, an ensemble whose international guest series brought in figures including Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider, Mike Stern, Yusef Lateef and Dave Douglas during his tenure. Casa del Jazz's "Giovani Leoni" ("Young Lions") series picked him out as an emerging talent, showcasing his Daniele Tittarelli Quartet and Jazz Guerrilla projects.

His second album, No Hay Banda (released 30 October 2008, Wide Sound), led to a second-place finish in Musica Jazz magazine's 2009 "Miglior Nuovo Talento" (Best New Talent) critics' poll. Around the same time, Giovanni Guidi brought him into the Unknown Rebel Band, and Enrico Rava into the Enrico Rava Special Edition, with whom he recorded the self-titled entry in L'Espresso's Jazz Italiano Live series (2009). From 2010 onward he continued with Rava's Parco della Musica Jazz Lab (PMJL) across several repertory projects performed on disc and at international festivals: Gershwin & More, Enrico Rava Song Book (issued as My Songbook, 2016), Lester! (music of Lester Bowie) and Rava on the Dance Floor (2012, ECM Records), a tribute to Michael Jackson. Discogs-confirmed personnel place him alongside Rava and Guidi on all of these releases. In 2010 he also co-founded, with a group of fellow Roman musicians, the Agus Jazz Collective, which organizes low-cost jazz performances in self-managed spaces across Rome.

Prestazione (2014, Parco della Musica Records), his third album, was recorded live at Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica with the trio Fresh Fish and trumpeter Francesco Lento; in a Jazz It magazine interview, Tittarelli described its original compositions as reflecting the influence of "the New York generation of the last ten years." In February 2014, Paolo Damiani invited him into the Double Trio project alongside Rosario Giuliani, Marco Bardoscia and Michele Rabbia, recording Seven Sketches in Music (2015, Parco della Musica Records) - one stop on a Damiani sideman relationship that Discogs credits confirm across four releases spanning 1996 to 2021. The Auditorium Parco della Musica also hosted a meeting between his own soprano and alto saxophone and Mario Corvini's New Talent Jazz Orchestra, recorded live and released as Extempora (2016, Parco della Musica Records), with Tittarelli's original compositions arranged by Corvini and Gianluigi Giannatempo.

Alongside his straight-ahead jazz work, Tittarelli has taken on theatrical and cross-genre projects: in 2006 he was among the musicians accompanying actor Giorgio Albertazzi in "Shakespeare in Jazz," and the following year he took part in "Pirata e Lippa," a Romagnolo folk tale set to jazz under Paolo Damiani's direction. In 2011 he played in the orchestra accompanying live performances of Dutch composer Jacob ter Veldhuis's "THE NEWS." His electronic and improvised-music side includes the group I.H.C., with whom he recorded the 1999 album Unti dal Signore and later scored a live performance of Fritz Lang's Metropolis at Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni in 2009, and UGOLESS, an ongoing duo project with Fabio Sasso pairing acoustic saxophone and drums with electronics, joined at various points by trumpeter Francesco Fratini, guitarist Francesco Poeti and synthesist Andrea Guastadisegni. His own biography and interviews also describe continuing collaborations with Rita Marcotulli, Sergio Cammariere, Nicola Conte and Michael Rosen; no independently verifiable Discogs recording credit connects him to Marcotulli or Conte specifically, so neither is treated as a confirmed session credit here (see daniele-tittarelli_notes.md).

In his formative years Tittarelli listened closely to and drew on John Coltrane, Steve Coleman and Kenny Garrett; his early compositions are often rhythmically intricate yet melodic, marked by a wry sense of humor. His tone, initially thin, developed body and roundness over time into a personal sound often compared to that of a tenor saxophonist. He later studied Stan Getz, Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, and more recently cites Lennie Tristano, Logan Richardson and Steve Lehman among his touchstones. From early on, critics noted his strong sense of form and his concentration and clarity as an improviser. His output has remained open to outside influence, from funk to later explorations in electronic sound.

His discography traces a single career-long alliance with Rome's contemporary mainstream jazz circle - conservatory-trained sidemen working the Enrico Rava/Giovanni Guidi/Paolo Damiani orbit - alongside his own smaller, Coltrane-indebted quartet records, a duality captured in his 2002 debut's title, Jungle Trane.
