Roni Kaspi is a drummer whose two careers run side by side: a touring jazz drummer inside bassist Avishai Cohen's trio and quintet, and a solo singer-songwriter and producer working under the name Roniponi. She picked up the drums at seven; her parents, by her own account, loved music but did not play themselves. She went on to the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts and then to Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full scholarship, studying under the Grammy-winning drummer and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, graduating in the fall of 2021.

Her jazz sideman credits begin while she was still tied to the Berklee scene: in 2019 she played drums on trumpeter Darren Barrett's The EVI Sessions: Mr. Steiner (dB Studios), a session stacked with jazz names, including saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Noah Preminger and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. In May 2020 she recorded "Night in Tunisia," a Dizzy Gillespie standard arranged by pianist Jesus Molina, for Molina's album Departing (Re:Wax Records), alongside bassist Sam Smith. That same period she also worked locally in Tel Aviv's jazz scene, playing drums in bassist Elay Kadosh's trio, with pianist Nitsan Kolko, for a June 1, 2021 date at the Guga Brenner club in Tel Aviv.

The turning point came in 2020, when Avishai Cohen discovered her playing on Instagram and invited her, at 21, into his trio alongside pianist Elchin Shirinov. She has toured internationally with Cohen ever since. The trio recorded Shifting Sands (2022, Naive Records), released two singles from the same sessions, "Lokum" and "Chacha Rom," and by 2024 Cohen had expanded the band and written a new tune in her honor: "Roni's Swing," a feature for her playing that first appeared on Brightlight (2024, Naive), recorded live at Blue Note Tokyo with pianist Guy Moskovich and saxophonist Yuval Drabkin, and was revisited the next year on the Avishai Cohen Quintet's Studio Live Session (2025, Little Big Beat Studios / LoEnd Records), a limited double-vinyl release taped at Little Big Beat Studios in Liechtenstein with pianist Itay Simhovich, Drabkin again on saxophone, and trombonist Jonathan Voltzok (credited on the release as "Yonathan Voltzok"). She also appears on pianist Jesus Molina's 2024 album Selah (Dynamo Productions) and, most recently, on bassist Mohini Dey's fusion album The Dey Way (2026, P-Vine Records), featured on the track "15 Steps Ahead" alongside fusion drummers Gergo Borlai, Eric Moore, Larnell Lewis, and Dennis Chambers. In 2023 the Drumeo Awards named her Best Jazz Drummer of the Year.

Parallel to the jazz touring, Kaspi produces and releases her own material as Roniponi, a project she describes as pulling from alt-pop, soul, world music, and electronica rather than straight jazz. Her debut EP, PONI (May 2024, self-released), and a follow-up, Tell Me (2025, self-released), both pair her own drumming with her singing and songwriting. She has led her own trio on the festival circuit as well, appearing at the Montreux Jazz Festival (2024 performance and workshop faculty, and again as part of its fall 2025 artist residency), the Tampere Jazz Happening, Jazz à Vienne, Le Boeuf sur le Toit's "Jazz de demain" series, and Rencontres Trans Musicales in Rennes, France, in December 2023. She endorses Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Remo drumheads, and Reunion Blues cases, and is now based in Los Angeles.

Kaspi's drumming comes directly out of the Berklee lineage associated with her teacher Terri Lyne Carrington, and it has been shaped in practice by five years inside Avishai Cohen's post-bop trio and quintet, a band built around Cohen's lyrical, Mediterranean-inflected bass writing and songs that move between straight-ahead swing, Middle Eastern and Jewish traditional material (the trio has recorded "Hitragut" and a version of "Summertime" alongside originals), and freer group improvisation. Cohen wrote "Roni's Swing" specifically as a feature for her playing, a rare mark of a bandleader building a piece of repertoire around a sideman's identity. Her session work outside the Cohen band, from Darren Barrett's 2019 EVI-led date to Mohini Dey's 2026 fusion album, leans toward harder-driving jazz fusion contexts. Her separate work as Roniponi, drumming, singing, writing, and producing alt-pop, soul, and electronica under her own name, is a distinct, non-jazz project by her own description, and is not the basis for her jazz-scene reputation.
