Tino Tracanna on the cover of his 1996 leader album *"Quartetto"* (Splasc(h) Records). Fair use - album cover art, editorial context (non-CC; no CC/PD photograph of Tracanna could be found - see search trail below). — Splasc(h) Records CD front cover, Discogs release 9230770; cropped to the photographic portion of the cover (the lower two-thirds, below the title typography).
Tino Tracanna, born Giustino Tracanna in Livorno on May 17, 1956, is an Italian jazz saxophonist, composer and conservatory educator who has spent nearly five decades at the center of the country's jazz scene, first as a sideman in two of its most influential working groups and then as a prolific leader in his own right. Raised in Bergamo, he earned a degree in Discipline of Arts, Music and Performance (DAMS) from the University of Bologna, where his thesis examined the music of American soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, a figure whose spare, exploratory approach to the horn would shape Tracanna's own playing. His recorded history begins in 1977, as a member of the Bergamo group Ziggurat.
From 1981 through the early 1990s, Tracanna was a featured member of pianist Franco D'Andrea's working groups, recording five albums together, including No Idea Of Time (1984, with the American rhythm section of bassist Mark Helias and drummer Barry Altschul) and the Franco D'Andrea Septet's Flavours (1992). Two of the D'Andrea group's records were voted Album of the Year by the Italian critics' poll in Musica Jazz magazine, in 1984 and 1986.
In 1983 Tracanna began what would become his longest-running musical partnership, joining trumpeter Paolo Fresu's Quintet as its saxophonist. More than forty years later the group, rounded out over the decades by pianist Roberto Cipelli, bassist Attilio Zanchi and drummer Ettore Fioravanti, remains active and is widely regarded as one of the defining ensembles of modern Italian jazz, with more than 850 concerts across Europe, Australia, Brazil and Asia. The Quintet's Night On The City (1995) and Mélos (2000) each won France's Prix Bobby Jaspar / Choc award from Jazzman magazine, and the group was voted Musica Jazz's Best Italian Group in 1990 and 1991. In 2006 the Quintet devoted an entire album, Incantamento, to Tracanna's own compositions, one installment of a "Plays The Music Of..." series that gave each member of the group a tribute record in turn.
Alongside his sideman work, Tracanna built a substantial leader and co-leader discography beginning with Mr. Frankenstein Blues (1988, Splasc(h) Records) and continuing through more than twenty further albums, many of them duo or small-group projects with a single close partner: Nudes (1999) with bassist Paolino Dalla Porta, Punctus (2000) with Swiss percussionist Pierre Favre, Seeds (2007) with bassist Giovanni Maier, and Passi Leggeri (2010) with pianist Luigi Martinale. In 2015 he co-founded the pianoless quartet Double Cut with tenor and soprano saxophonist Massimiliano Milesi, a former student of his at the conservatory, together with bassist Giulio Corini and drummer Filippo Sala; the quartet's self-titled debut (UR Records, 2016) placed a track on Musica Jazz's Top Jazz 2016 critics' poll, and the group followed it with Mappe (2018). His most recent leader recordings include Distilled (2020, with Corini and drummer Vittorio Marinoni) and the live trio session Spiritus Spiritus (2024, with French tuba and serpent player Michel Godard).
Tracanna has taught at Italian conservatories since 1995 and, since 2000, has held a tenured professorship as coordinator of the Jazz Courses at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan; he also led jazz seminars at the Nuoro Jazz festival in Sardinia until 2014. Discogs lists his own name alongside four closely related group entities, "Tino Tracanna Acrobats," "Tino Tracanna Trio," "Tino Tracanna Quartet" and "Double Cut," all billing variations tied to his own working units rather than separate musicians, folded together in the discography below.
Tracanna's playing on tenor, soprano, alto and baritone saxophone sits at the meeting point of Italy's lyrical post-bop mainstream, shaped by decades inside the Paolo Fresu Quintet's melodic, chamber-adjacent small-group sound, and a sparer, more exploratory current traceable to his own conservatory thesis on Steve Lacy. That duality runs through his discography: duo records like Punctus with percussionist Pierre Favre (Discogs-tagged Free Jazz and Free Improvisation) and the Double Cut quartet (tagged Avant-Garde Jazz and Free Improvisation alongside Contemporary Jazz) push toward open, unaccompanied interplay, while his longest-running group work with Fresu, Franco D'Andrea and Roberto Cipelli stays closer to a harmonically grounded, mainstream post-bop idiom. As a bandleader he has gravitated repeatedly toward intimate duo and small-group formats built around a single close partner rather than a fixed working band, and as a teacher he has helped carry that sensibility forward directly, training saxophonist Massimiliano Milesi, who went on to co-found a working quartet with him.
Compiled via the Discogs API. Identity confirmed via Discogs artist ID 1117270 ("Tino Tracanna"), profile text "Italian jazz saxophonist, born 1956 in Livorno, Italy," with official site tinotracanna.com listed as a URL on the artist record. Four related Discogs entities are billing variations of his own working units rather than separate musicians or a name collision: "Tino Tracanna Acrobats" (id 5346073), "Tino Tracanna Trio" (id 8856082), "Tino Tracanna Quartet" (id 17725542) and "Double Cut" (id 6947458, his co-led quartet with Massimiliano Milesi). Releases filed under these four entities (Red Basics, Distilled and Un'ora) are folded into the tables below alongside his main artist ID's own release index, since Discogs splits some of his sideman-table cross-references between the two.
Personnel is drawn from each release's own credited instrumentalists via the Discogs API; a blank Personnel cell means Discogs lists no instrument-level credits for that release.

Beyond the "Tino Tracanna Acrobats," "Tino Tracanna Trio," "Tino Tracanna Quartet" and "Double Cut" entities folded into the Leader table above, Tracanna's Discogs artist record lists further group memberships confirmed by this discography: the Paolo Fresu Quintet/Sextet (his primary outside vehicle since the mid-1980s, appearing under more than twenty-five separate release billings above, including the "Plays The Music Of..." tribute series that gave Tracanna his own dedicated entry, Incantamento, in 2006), the Franco D'Andrea Quartet/Septet (1981 to the early 1990s, and recurring through 2023's Sketches of the 20th Century), Ettore Fioravanti's Belcanto, and the ARP Quintet (1984-1990, alongside Claudio Angeleri and Paolino Dalla Porta).
A later live recording by the Bonnot/Cecchetto/Tracanna trio first documented here on Drops (2013), titled Drops (Live In Bologna) and adding Paolo Fresu as a guest, is findable on Spotify and Qobuz but is not yet reflected in Discogs' own release data for this artist as of this discography's compilation; flagged here rather than silently included as a verified Discogs credit.
