Fabrizio Sferra is a Rome-born drummer who has spent four decades in the rhythm section of Italian jazz, first in Enrico Pieranunzi's Space Jazz Trio, then as the founding drummer of Doctor 3 with pianist Danilo Rea and bassist Enzo Pietropaoli, and since the 2000s as the drummer on several of Enrico Rava's records. He was born on November 9, 1959. In a published interview he says his father gave him a drum kit when he was 17, and that he spent his early years more or less living at Rome's Music Inn jazz club until other musicians pushed him onto the stage. Biographies date his professional career to the late 1970s.

His first documented recordings are from the Pieranunzi circle. He plays drums on a 1980 big-ensemble LP by Manuel De Sica featuring Pieranunzi and trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini, and on Pieranunzi's Autumn Song, recorded live at the Berlin Jazz Days on November 11, 1984, with alto saxophonist Massimo Urbani and Pietropaoli, and issued by Enja in 1985. The Space Jazz Trio grew out of that lineup: biographies date it to 1983 or 1984 and run it through 1992, and Sferra is credited on the drums for its first studio album, Vol. 1 (1986, YVP Music), and for Little Girl Blue (1988, Philology), the session on which the group backed Chet Baker. Biographical notes say the trio won Musica Jazz critics' referendums for best record in 1988 and best formation in 1989. Discogs credits other drummers on the trio's later records with Lee Konitz and Phil Woods, so his place in the Space Jazz Trio is best read as the mid-1980s core of the group. In the same years he, Pietropaoli and guitarist Lanfranco Malaguti made three albums as the Malaguti / Pietropaoli / Sferra trio: Sound Investigations (1988) and Synthetismos (1989) on Splasc(h), and Something (1989) on Nueva. Asked about Pieranunzi, Sferra calls the meeting fundamental.

The 1990s widened his circle. He is the drummer on Ralph Towner's film-score record Un' Altra Vita (CAM, 1992) with bassist Massimo Moriconi; on guitarist Fabio Zeppetella's Moving Lines (1995), a quartet with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and bassist Ares Tavolazzi; on Umberto Fiorentino's Ulisse (1995) alongside Dario Deidda, Gabriele Mirabassi and Daniele Scannapieco; and with Paolo Fresu on Valentina Casula's This Is Always (1995). In 1997 he joined the Mèta Quartet with bassist Riccardo Lay, saxophonist Sandro Satta and Antonello Salis for Sintesi (Via Veneto Jazz), where Discogs credits him on drums and voice. Biographies also name Toots Thielemans, Joe Pass, Mal Waldron, Johnny Griffin, Paul Bley and Pat Metheny among the musicians he has worked with; those are reported in his biographies rather than confirmed at the release-credit level.

Doctor 3 is the group that made his name outside the club scene. Sferra, Rea and Pietropaoli formed the trio in 1997 and recorded The Tales of Doctor 3 in December of that year at Millesuoni Studio in Rome; released on Via Veneto Jazz in 1998, it was voted best Italian album of the year by Musica Jazz, and the magazine's Top Jazz critics' poll named Doctor 3 the country's best jazz group in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Biographies say the trio represented Italian jazz at New York's Town Hall in January 2001. Its records run through The Songs Remain the Same (1999), Bambini Forever (2001, where Sferra is credited as co-writer on several tracks), the live Winter Tales (2003), Blue (2007, with Rea on prepared piano), two entries in the Casa del Jazz Jazzitaliano Live series (a full reading of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper in 2007 and a set of 1968 protest songs in 2008), a self-titled album on Parco della Musica Records (2014) and Canto Libero (2019, built from the Lucio Battisti and Mogol songbook), on which Sferra is credited as composer of three tracks. In the interview he describes the trio as one that improvises freely and moves across jazz, pop and light music rather than working from fixed arrangements.

Alongside Doctor 3 he has been a regular sideman for pianist Stefano Battaglia and for Enrico Rava. With Battaglia and bassist Paolino Dalla Porta he plays on the two volumes of The Book of Jazz (2000, 2002, Symphonia), and he is a member of the quartet Changes with Battaglia, tenor saxophonist Emanuele Cisi and bassist Piero Leveratto (Small Changes, Splasc(h)). With Rava he is the drummer on Full of Life (C.A.M. Jazz, 2003), a piano-less quartet with saxophonist Javier Girotto and Tavolazzi, and on the quintet album Tribe (ECM, 2011) with trombonist Gianluca Petrella and pianist Giovanni Guidi. Discogs also credits him on the DVD Live in Montreal (2006), which lists Francesco Cafiso and Andrea Pozza in the lineup. Other sideman dates from the 2000s and 2010s include Rosario Giuliani's Jazzitaliano Live 2007 with Pieranunzi as special guest and his later The Hidden Side (2016) with pianist Alessandro Lanzoni and cellist Paolo Damiani, plus Danilo Rea's Introverso, where he shares the drum chair with Roberto Gatto.

His own records are more recent. Rooms (EmArcy/Universal, 2009) is a trio album with Guidi on piano and Francesco Ponticelli on bass, with Sferra composing alongside them. Untitled #28 (Via Veneto Jazz, 2012) adds saxophonist and clarinetist Dan Kinzelman and bassist Joe Rehmer to a quartet with Guidi. He made three trio records with guitarist Bebo Ferra: Visions (Abeat, 2007, with bassist Rosario Bonaccorso), 3 of Visions (2014) and Frames of Crimson (Via Veneto Jazz, 2017), a King Crimson tribute with Dalla Porta on bass and Petrella as featured trombonist. Il Bagno Turco (Parco della Musica Records, 2011) is a piano-less trio with Petrella and Dalla Porta, and Welcome (Effemusic, 2008) is a trio with Cisi and bassist Furio Di Castri. He also appears on The Auditorium Session (2008), co-billed with trumpeter Tom Harrell, saxophonist Maurizio Giammarco, Zeppetella and Deidda. Grace in Town (Parco della Musica Records, 2018) is a set of original songs written with singer Costanza Alegiani; it is a rock- and pop-inflected project on which, per the label, Sferra plays drums and electronics and sings for the first time. Zeppetella describes a working quartet with Tavolazzi, pianist Dado Moroni and Sferra, documented on Jazz Masters (2023), which is not indexed on Discogs. He was still active in 2026, with drums on Red Rock by Eddie & The Kids, alongside Pietropaoli.

Sferra is also a teacher. He holds the chair for jazz drums and percussion at the Morlacchi Conservatory in Perugia, is on the faculty of Siena Jazz University and has taught at Rome's Saint Louis College of Music and Accademia Romana di Musica, and he has run seminars and clinics across Italy. Several drummers in this catalogue name him as a teacher in their own biographies: Emanuele Maniscalco (Trio Performance at Siena Jazz, 2001-2003), Emanuele Primavera (Rome), Evita Polidoro and Dario Congedo. Those are teaching relationships reported by the students, not recording credits.

Sferra is a trio drummer by temperament. In the interview he says he drew ideas from the drumming of Roy Haynes and Paul Motian, and that the work of the instrument only took on meaning for him in relation to the music, which is why he avoids treating drumming technique as something separate from the tune. He says he has no stereo system at home. His records bear that out: the Doctor 3 albums treat Beatles, Battisti and pop songs as open material for free improvisation, the Battaglia and Ferra dates are quiet, conversational trio jazz, and Discogs tags the Lewis Porter record Post Bop, Frames of Crimson Jazz and Rock, and Costanza Alegiani's Folkways Jazz and Pop.
