Marcello Allulli is a Rome-based tenor saxophonist, a Berklee College of Music graduate whose career runs from mainstream small-group jazz to the electronics-inflected trio work that has become his signature. He was artistic director of Rome's Music Inn jazz club, one of Italy's historic jazz venues, from 2011 to 2012, and has taught saxophone and ensemble music at Siena Jazz University since 2020. From 2011 to 2018 he was named among the best Italian saxophonists at the JAZZIT Award.

His first Discogs-documented recording is Mufloni (2000, Splasc(h) Records), a quintet co-led with pianist Glauco Venier, trumpeter David Boato, bassist Salvatore Maiore and drummer Roberto Dani, recorded at Artesuono Studio in November 1998. Enrico Rava wrote the album's liner notes. Allulli co-founded Nohaybandatrio in 2004 with Fabio Recchia and Emanuele Tomasi, and in 2007 formed MAT, his best-known project, with guitarist Francesco Diodati and drummer Ermanno Baron. Billed variously as the Marcello Allulli Trio and as MAT, the group works without a bass, fusing acoustic and electronic sound into what reviewers have called "third millennium jazz," blending neo-bop, funk, avant-garde textures and Mediterranean melody. Its debut, Hermanos (2012, Zone di Musica), with guests Fabrizio Bosso (trumpet and electronics) and Antonio Jasevoli (guitar), was named by JAZZIT among the best national and international albums of 2011 and toured Italy with Bosso. The trio's second album, MAT (2014, Zone di Musica, reissued in 2015 as a covermount disc for Jazzit magazine), added guest turns from Antonello Salis on piano and accordion, Venier on piano, Boato on trumpet and vocalist Greta Panettieri. A third trio album, commonly cited as Musgo Y Luna (2014), is not indexed on Discogs. The trio's fourth album, In Front Of (2021, Tǔk Music), was recorded live and unedited at Cicaleto Studio, with Paolo Fresu as executive producer.

Between the trio's records, Allulli has led or co-led a run of other small-group projects: RAJ Trio (2010, Parco della Musica Records), a guitar/sax/drums co-led session with Jasevoli and drummer/electronics player Michele Rabbia; Notturno (2016, EvArt), a trio with double bassist Daniele Cappucci and Mexican drummer Israel Varela, recorded in Brussels; Canto (2019, ProMu), a duo with pianist Giovanni Ceccarelli; and KAPI (2023, iKi Muzik), a trio with the Turkish vocalist and composer Selen Gülün and pianist Emanuele De Raymondi, not indexed on Discogs but confirmed on Spotify. He is also a member of the Roberto Gatto Imperfect Trio, the "Home Made in Rome" quartet with oud player Kamal Musallam, L'Insiùm with Venier, Norma Ensemble, and Gatto's "Progressivamente" project from 2020. As a sideman he has recorded with Costanza Alegiani (Folkways, 2021; Lucio Dove Vai?, 2023) and Venier's own Suite Per Pier Paolo (2022), among other credits.

Allulli's discography spans two poles. MAT/the Marcello Allulli Trio is his most exploratory outlet: without a bass, and with Diodati's guitar routed through loops and effects, the group works simple melodic gestures into extended, dynamically wide performances that move between quiet lyricism and noise, drawing on neo-bop, funk, avant-garde improvisation and Mediterranean melody. His other projects sit closer to mainstream and chamber jazz: the guitar-trio economy of RAJ Trio, the duo intimacy of Canto with Ceccarelli, and the tenor-and-rhythm-section format of Notturno. Across both poles his catalog favors small, bass-optional or bass-light lineups and frequent, long-running duo and trio partnerships over larger ensembles.
