Gabriele Comeglio is a Milan-based saxophonist, arranger and big-band leader, born on August 8, 1960 in Mortara, in the province of Pavia. According to his biographies he studied saxophone with Sergio Rigon and harmony with Attilio Donadio at the Capolinea school in Milan, then took a diploma with honors in professional music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1981. Italian Wikipedia and his own biographies describe him as the first Italian to graduate from Berklee; that claim is repeated across those sources without independent documentation. He later added a diploma in instrumentation in Italy and master's-level qualifications in jazz, including jazz clarinet, from the London College of Music.

His first professional platform was the orchestra of Italian state radio. In the 1980s he won the competition for the alto saxophone chair of the RAI Milan rhythmic orchestra and held it for thirteen years, and his biographies list solo appearances with Milan's Orchestra "Verdi," the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra dell'Angelicum and the Summer Musical Festival Orchestra under Marc Andreae. In 1985 he recorded on tenor and soprano saxophones with pianist Mario Rusca's quintet, whose self-titled LP on Flam also features the trumpeter Flavio Boltro; according to Italian Wikipedia, the quintet won the RAI Jazz Cup that year.

The big band has been his main jazz vehicle ever since. From 1986 to 1995 he directed the Jazz Class Orchestra, a big band within the Milan orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, and his biographies credit it with more than 300 concerts. Discogs documents three of its records. J.Class 86 (1986) carries his arrangements of four tracks, with Antonio Faraò on piano and Emilio Soana in the trumpet section. Sound and Colours (Ducale Jazz, 1991) has guest soloists Franco D'Andrea and Franco Ambrosetti and eight of its ten compositions are Comeglio's. Porgy and Bess, recorded in Milan on July 23, 1994 and issued by Philology in 1999, presents Gershwin's score with Phil Woods as special guest on alto saxophone; Discogs credits Comeglio as leader, arranger and saxophonist. He has also directed the Big Band Jazz Company since its founding in 1985 (its Flying High, recorded in June 1991 at Salablu in Milan, has Soana on trumpet and Ada Rovatti on tenor), and Italian Wikipedia says that band has performed with Bob Mintzer, Bob Malach, Herb Pomeroy, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano and Randy Brecker. In 1993 he shared billing with the saxophonist Piero Cairo on Jazzpopfunky 2 - Sax In Grooves (Fonit Cetra), recorded with the Jazz Company band of the Civico Istituto "L. Costa" in Vigevano.

Since 1995, according to his biographies, he has worked with the Bergamo pianist Claudio Angeleri and recorded twelve CDs with him; Discogs itemizes nine, from Jazz Files (CDpM LION, 1996) through Concerto feat. Gianluigi Trovesi (Dodicilune, 2023), the last with the clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi. Between those, on Franco Ambrosetti's big-band album Grazie Italia (Enja, 2000), he played alto saxophone in an ensemble with Enrico Rava, Dado Moroni, Antonio Faraò, Furio Di Castri and Roberto Gatto. His latest jazz credit outside his own records is Rusca's 4th Dimension (Easy Tempo, 2024), again with Boltro.

Outside jazz he has had a parallel career in Italian popular music. Discogs lists him on 34 Mina releases between 1994 and 2024, as saxophonist, woodwind player, arranger or string conductor, and his biographies describe arrangements for Mina and Ron, four years directing Polygram's productions at the Sanremo Festival, substitute conducting at Sanremo in 2013 and 2014, and the 2002 and 2003 tours of Franco Battiato, for which his own wind ensemble supplied the brass. They also list solo appearances with Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder on their Italian dates, television themes including "Quelli che il calcio" and "Che tempo che fa," and, from 2005, the touring show "Sing & Swing" with the actor Massimo Lopez. He conducts and arranges for Nick the Nightfly's Montecarlo Nights orchestra, which plays regularly at Milan's Blue Note.

Teaching runs alongside all of this. He directed the civic music school in Mortara, taught for more than twenty years at the Costa Institute in Vigevano, and now teaches jazz at Milan's Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado and at the CPM Music Institute, with further posts at the Scuola di Musica Moderna in Lugano (SMUM) and the CDpM in Bergamo. At SMUM he conducted the school's big band at its 25th-anniversary concert in 2019 with Ambrosetti and Rick Margitza as guests, and in July 2019, according to the school, he conducted Bob Mintzer's big band at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

In 2025 he released The Journey, the first record on Discogs under his own name alone. (Dodicilune, released February 4, 2025) collects recordings made between 1995 and 2021 in Italy, Switzerland and the United States. Discogs lists 36 other musicians beside him, among them Mintzer, Brecker, Ambrosetti, Bob Malach, Marvin Stamm, Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, Bill Mays, Moroni, Angeleri, Soana, Adam Nussbaum and Jay Anderson, and the vocalist on Tom Waits's "Alice" is Caterina Comeglio. Nine of the thirteen pieces are his own compositions. The reviewer Francesco Cataldo Verrina, writing for Doppiojazz on February 3, 2025, called his playing energetic and versatile, with influences running from Charlie Parker to Johnny Hodges.

Comeglio is a Berklee-schooled alto saxophonist who writes and conducts for large ensembles and draws on a bebop and swing repertory. Verrina's review places his alto sound between Parker and Hodges while calling it distinctly personal. The Journey itself moves between the high-energy big-band writing of "Shuffle Tune" and "Song for Caterina," the bebop of "Bop Street" (which has solos from Mintzer and Brecker), modal pieces and the electronic textures of "Night Roads." Angeleri's liner notes, as summarized by Jazzitalia, stress the balance and playability of his arrangements and his consistency across settings from free jazz to orchestral work.

His discography splits in two. Of the 90 distinct releases on his Discogs page, 38 carry a Jazz tag, while 34 are Mina albums and most of the rest are pop, rock and electronic sessions, so any account of him has to hold both the jazz bandleader and the studio professional in view. The jazz work is where he is credited as leader, composer and director; the pop work is where his arranging and section playing reached the largest audience.
