Luigi Bonafede is a pianist, drummer, composer and arranger born in 1954. Sources consistently describe him as a Piedmontese musician whose career took shape through Milan: he developed his jazz training at the Capolinea, Milan's best-known jazz club of the era, where, in his own account, he encountered "the most renowned and representative jazz musicians, especially Italian but also European and overseas." He emerged on the national scene in the mid-1970s through early collaborations with guitarist Larry Nocella and alto saxophonist Massimo Urbani, and he plays both piano and drums, at times alternating between the two within the same piece.

Bonafede's own Bonafedegruppo Jazz cut Locomotiva in 1977, and the following year he led the Luigi Bonafede Jazz Trio on Esasperazione (Carosello) and drummed on Tullio De Piscopo's Future Percussion. Between 1979 and 1981 he was the pianist in Claudio Fasoli's New Quartet, appearing on The Meeting (1979, with tenor saxophonist Pat LaBarbera) and Cloudy (1981, Palcoscenico Records), the latter with bassist Piero Leveratto and liner notes by the German jazz critic Joachim Ernst Berendt. In 1980 he recorded as the pianist on Massimo Urbani's single Dedication To A.A. & J.C. / Max's Mood, alongside bassist Furio Di Castri and drummer Paolo Pellegatti; Urbani, one of Italian jazz's most celebrated alto saxophonists, later included this same recording, alongside archival sessions with several other pianists, on the 2018 retrospective Massimo Urbani (Red Record).

From at least 1986 Bonafede became the regular drummer for pianist Guido Manusardi's working trio and quartet, a relationship documented on Discogs across six releases spanning three decades: Outstanding - Live In Tirano (1986, with bassist Piero Leveratto), Canzoni Per Una Valle (1988, a promotional LP for the Chiavenna valley on which alto saxophonist Lee Konitz guests with the Corale Laurenziana choir), On The Sunny Side Of The Street (2001, with vocalist Teodora Enache and bassist Lucio Terzano), Poinciana (2008, a Japanese release of a 1985 Bari concert tape), Empathy (2011) and Metamorphosis (2015). In 1988 he also drummed on Umbria Jazz All Stars, a session credited to the Rita Marcotulli-Pietro Tonolo Quartet with pianist Rita Marcotulli and tenor saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, and in 1998 he played drums on Franck Avitabile's Dreyfus Jazz album In Tradition, produced by Michel Petrucciani, whose father Louis Petrucciani guests on bass.

As a leader, Bonafede's catalog runs through Italy's independent jazz labels: Bittersweet (1999, Caligola); Glasswater (2001, Splasc(h) Records), co-billed with tenor saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, bassist Pietro Ciancaglini and drummer Francesco Sotgiu; Rememberin' Bicio, a live recording from the 4th Nord-Est Jazz Fest (2002, Caligola); To Include (2002, Splasc(h)); Peace (2007, ObliqSound), again co-billed with Tonolo and reviewed on All About Jazz; Living In The City (2008, ObliqSound); Anime Acustiche (2020), credited to the Luigi Bonafede Poker Quartet; Lanten (2021), credited to his Unusual Quintet; Lokas (2021, Caligola), a quintet date dedicated to the late Piedmontese singer Anna Lokas and featuring saxophonist Gaspare Pasini, bassist Marco Vaggi and drummer Ferdinando Faraò; and Tynerly Quintet (2024). He was also a recurring session pianist in the 2000s for Gerardo Frisina's Schema Records productions, appearing on releases including Intenso, Hi Note, The Gods Of The Yoruba / Cohete and Tokyo's Dream, and on five Rossana Casale albums between 1994 and 2009.

Bonafede has taught music for roughly two decades, including sixteen years at the City of Turin's Corsi di Formazione Musicale, six years at the Desio municipal school near Milan, four years at the Dorno municipal school in the Pavia area, and two years at the Conservatorio "A. Vivaldi" in Alessandria; he won first prize in the 1997 Barga Jazz composition and arrangement competition. As a leader and sideman he has played the Montreux Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz (four times), Siena Jazz (four times), the Grande Parade du Jazz in Nice, and a Duke University date in Durham, North Carolina.

Bonafede works in a bebop-rooted mainstream idiom, moving between his working trios and quartets and larger-group dates without settling into one fixed lineup; a 2021 review of Lokas described his writing as "jazz deeply rooted in bebop tradition" that leaves extensive room for improvisation. He names John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner as major influences, and has said of his own relationship to the music, "I work to survive but play to live." His doubling on both piano and drums, sometimes within the same performance, is an unusual signature for an Italian bandleader of his generation, and it runs through his work as a sideman as much as his own leader dates.
