Stefano Di Battista was born in Rome on February 14, 1969, and came to the saxophone at thirteen through a neighborhood brass orchestra. The records that turned him toward jazz were Art Pepper's and Cannonball Adderley's, and both remain audible in his tone: bright, forward, more concerned with singing a line than with covering it in notes.

The figure who turned an interest into a vocation was Massimo Urbani (1957-1993), the Roman alto player whose devotion to Charlie Parker made him the most talked-about saxophonist in Italian jazz through the late 1970s and 1980s, and after whom the Premio Massimo Urbani, Italy's competition for young jazz saxophonists, is named. Urbani mentored Di Battista as a teenager. Di Battista has described what he took from him as energy, generosity, and physical and spiritual commitment to music, and calls him one of the best mentors he had. Urbani passed away in June 1993, when Di Battista was 24.

The turn outward came the summer before. In 1992 the pianist Jean-Pierre Como heard Di Battista play at the Calvi Jazz Festival in Corsica and urged him to move to Paris. He went, and the French scene absorbed him quickly. Drummer Aldo Romano had him on record by 1995 for Prosodie on Verve. Conductor Laurent Cugny brought him into the Orchestre National de Jazz in 1994, where he played alongside trumpeter Flavio Boltro, another Italian who had made the same crossing and who would become his most frequent front-line partner. Di Battista has since said that France was where he found himself as a player, and that it gave him a maturity and a quiet he did not have when he left.

His debut as a leader, Volare, appeared on the French label Label Bleu in 1997, a quintet record with Boltro on trumpet, Eric Legnini on piano, Rosario Bonaccorso on bass and Benjamin Henocq on drums. Blue Note signed him the following year for A Prima Vista, beginning a run of five albums for the label that defined his first two decades.

The 2000 self-titled album is the centerpiece of that run. Elvin Jones, John Coltrane's drummer, played the session, with Jacky Terrasson on piano and Bonaccorso on bass, and the record opens with a Di Battista original called "Elvin's Song." Jones subsequently took him out on the road with the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. Two years later 'Round About Roma put him in front of the string ensemble Les Archets de Paris with Vince Mendoza arranging and conducting, eight tracks all written by Di Battista. Parker's Mood (2004) is the bebop statement, with Kenny Barron on piano and Herlin Riley on drums, working through "Salt Peanuts," "Donna Lee," "Confirmation," and the Parker title track. Trouble Shootin' (2007), the last of the Blue Note albums, brings in Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet, Russell Malone on guitar, Eric Harland on drums and Baptiste Trotignon on Hammond B3. Di Battista also played on Bosso's own Blue Note album You've Changed that same year.

Alongside the leader dates he stayed close to two scenes at once. In Italy he recorded with Enrico Rava on Noir (1996) and with Rita Marcotulli on The Woman Next Door (Label Bleu, 1998). In France he joined Michel Petrucciani's sextet for Both Worlds (1997), one of the last projects of the pianist's life; Petrucciani passed away in January 1999. By the time Di Battista turned 30, both of the musicians who had opened the largest doors for him were gone.

Woman's Land (2011) is the most unusual record in the catalogue, twelve pieces each titled after a woman, from "Molly Bloom" and "Valentina Tereskova" to "Anna Magnani" and "Lara Croft," with Bosso on trumpet, Jeff Ballard on drums, Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar and Ivan Lins singing. A duo album with the French guitarist Sylvain Luc, Giù la Testa, followed in 2014, and La Musica di Noi (2015) reunited him with three central figures of the Roman scene: Danilo Rea on piano, Dario Rosciglione on bass and Roberto Gatto on drums.

The later work turns toward Italy's own composers. Italian Standards (Casa del Jazz, 2016) was the first sign of it. The project that made it definitive was Morricone Stories, released on Warner on April 2, 2021: eleven Ennio Morricone film themes played by a working quartet of Di Battista, Fred Nardin on piano, Daniele Sorrentino on double bass and André Ceccarelli on drums, with no orchestra and no attempt to reproduce the soundtracks. The twelfth track, "Flora," is a Morricone original written for Di Battista. The two men met in 2007 at a dinner friends organized for the composer after a television prize; Morricone learned that Di Battista played saxophone, announced that he would write him a song, and did so on the spot. Di Battista named it after his daughter and first recorded it on Più Sole (EmArcy, 2009). Morricone passed away in July 2020, before the album appeared.

La Dolce Vita followed on May 3, 2024, with the same rhythm section plus trumpeter Matteo Cutello. Named for the Fellini film, its twelve tracks are drawn entirely from Italian composers: Nino Rota twice, along with Morricone, Nicola Piovani, Armando Trovajoli, Piero Umiliani, Paolo Conte, Renato Carosone, Bobby Solo, Francesco Sartori, and Lucio Dalla, with whom Di Battista had recorded three times. Its ninth track is Domenico Modugno's "Volare," the song whose title he had borrowed for his own debut twenty-seven years earlier without ever playing it.

Di Battista is a melodist first. Art Pepper and Cannonball Adderley are the players he names as his way into jazz, and the Adderley influence in particular shows in an alto sound that stays bright and vocal at speed rather than turning hard or acidic. Massimo Urbani supplied the other half: the Parker lineage, and an approach to playing as physical commitment rather than craft.

The bebop vocabulary is genuine and not decorative, as Parker's Mood demonstrates across ten Parker-associated pieces with Kenny Barron. What separates him from a straight revivalist is a willingness to change the frame around it. 'Round About Roma set his writing against a Paris string ensemble under Vince Mendoza. Woman's Land built an album around twelve portraits. Morricone Stories and La Dolce Vita take Italian film and song repertoire and treat it as standards material, which is what it functionally is: Morricone, Rota, and Trovajoli all wrote melodies strong enough to improvise on.

His soprano playing is a distinct voice rather than a doubling convenience, and it carries much of the lyrical weight on the two Warner albums, including the reading of "Gabriel's Oboe" from The Mission, where the soprano takes the part the oboe plays in the original.
