Plenty of people in Italy could tell you Stefano Bollani's face before they could name a single one of his records. He spent years as a television and radio host, mixing music with conversation and comedy, and built an audience that had nothing to do with jazz clubs before they found out the same person had one of the more interesting discographies on ECM Records.

Born in Milan in 1972, Bollani trained classically before turning fully toward jazz, building his reputation the way most serious players do: through the company he kept. His longest-running partnership is with fellow Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava. The two co-led three ECM records together, Tati (2005), The Third Man (2007), and Rava Plays Rava and Montréal Diary /B on the Italian Philology and Label Bleu imprints, and Bollani appears as a core member of Rava's own quintet on New York Days (2009, ECM), a Rava-led session alongside Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, and Paul Motian.

Bollani's range as a duo partner is one of the more distinctive things about his catalog. In 2011, he released Orvieto, a live duo album with Chick Corea. Two years later came O Que Será, a duo record with Brazilian mandolinist Hamilton De Holanda that has almost nothing in common with the Corea session except the same sense that Bollani plays well with people who don't sound like him.

The jazz world noticed early. In 2005, Bollani won the Jazzpar Prize, the Danish award that's been treated as one of jazz's more serious international honors since the 1980s, young enough that it read as a statement about where his career was headed. His discography runs to 312 Discogs credits, with 68 albums where he's billed as leader or co-leader, recorded across Label Bleu, ECM, Decca, and Sony Music, among others.

Fellow Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu is a more recent connection: Fresu guests on flugelhorn on Bollani's 2026 live album Tutta Vita Live, alongside Enrico Rava himself, tying together three of this project's spotlighted artists on a single record.

Bollani's playing draws on a deep classical grounding layered with an improviser's willingness to work across genre lines, from straight-ahead jazz standards to Brazilian choro, classical repertoire (he has recorded Gershwin and Poulenc with full orchestras), and pop covers. His duo partnerships, with pianists as different as Chick Corea and mandolinist Hamilton De Holanda, are the clearest evidence of a player who treats genre as a starting point rather than a boundary.

His decades-long partnership with Enrico Rava, under ECM producer Manfred Eicher, places him within the label's broader lineage of spare, exacting duo and small-group recording, even as his TV/radio career and Italian-pop collaborations (Irene Grandi, Caparezza) keep him working well outside that lineage as well.
