Gaetano Partipilo is an alto saxophonist born on 2 October 1974 in Cassano delle Murge, in the province of Bari. He has released ten records under his own name or co-billed, from Urban Society (Soul Note, 2002) to Leave&Meet (AUAND, 2021), and Discogs lists 108 entries on his artist page, including sideman work on records by Nicola Conte, Paolo Fresu, Pino Minafra, Bruno Tommaso and the pianist Mirko Signorile.

He began on saxophone at eight in his hometown's town band and, according to his official biography, enrolled at 15 at the "N. Piccinni" Conservatory in Bari, where he studied classical music with Roberto Ottavino and took his diploma in 1997. From 1996 to 1999 he attended the Siena Jazz professional courses, with teachers his biography lists as including Mario Raja, Paolo Fresu and Gianluigi Trovesi. In 2000 Discogs credits him on saxophone on the Dolmen Orchestra's Sequenze Armoniche (Some Gregorian Reflections) (Leo Records), an album on which John Surman is credited on baritone and soprano saxophone. In 1999 he won a scholarship to represent Italy at the International Association of Schools of Jazz meeting, and spent October to December in New York, where he met Jason Moran, Greg Osby and the drummer Nasheet Waits.

His first recording context was Bari's own scene. Up Up With The Jazz Convention (Schema, recorded June 2-4, 1997 at Sorriso Studio in Bari, listed by Discogs as a 1998 release) was made by a band that pairs him with trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, trombonist Gianluca Petrella and pianist Stefano Bollani, with Nicola Conte credited as producer. Conte kept Partipilo in his own records: Discogs credits him on alto saxophone and flute on Conte's Jet Sounds (2000), Garota Moderna with Rosalia De Souza (2002), Rituals (2008) and Love & Revolution (2011), and on the B-side of a 2026 Conte 7-inch single, "Naquela Base".

As a leader he moved between a New York-flavored post-bop and freer, electronics-laced music. Urban Society (Soul Note, recorded January 4, 2001 at Sorriso Studios in Bari) brought Nasheet Waits and the Japanese bassist Atsushi Osada over from New York as guests; Basic (Soul Note, 2004), credited to Gaetano Partipilo & Urban Society, added Petrella on trombone, Massimo Greco on trumpet and vibraphonist Pasquale Bardaro. Live in Clusone (Soul Note, 2004) shared a recorded festival night with trumpeter Giovanni Falzone and Signorile. His Italian Wikipedia entry says the critics' poll of the magazine Musica Jazz ranked him second and third best new Italian talent in 2004 and 2005. The Right Place (EmArcy/Universal, 2007) was recorded in New York on January 18-19, 2006 with guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist Roberto Tarenzi, bassist Matt Brewer and Waits.

The Auand label became a second home. I Like Too Much (AUAND, 2008), recorded live in August 2007, is a trio record with guitarist Miles Okazaki and drummer Dan Weiss, on which Discogs credits him on alto saxophone and laptop electronics. He is the alto saxophonist and flutist of The Auanders on Live in Pisa (2013) and appears on the Auand Family's "50" (2016). Upgrading (JErec, 2010) is a live suite recorded at the Max Theatre, and Besides - Songs From The Sixties followed on Schema in 2013. In 2016 his quintet Gaetano Partipilo and the Contemporary Five, with pianist Alessandro Lanzoni, guitarist Francesco Diodati, bassist Luca Alemanno and drummer Dario Congedo, recorded Daylight for Paolo Fresu's Tǔk Music label. The same year he played on Fresu's Around Tǔk, recorded on February 2, 2016 at the Casa del Jazz in Rome.

His latest band is Boom Collective, launched in 2018 with support from a Puglia regional program for local music and produced by Auand. Its two records, Boom Collective (2019) and Leave&Meet (2021), reach past jazz into neo-soul, funk and hip-hop, with vocalists Angela Esmeralda Pepe and Carolina Bubbico on the first and Pepe and Joanna Teters on the second. Congedo is the drummer on all three of his AUAND and Tǔk dates from this period. Leave&Meet was conceived in spring 2020 during the Italian lockdown and released on November 12, 2021.

He teaches jazz saxophone at the conservatory in Foggia, a post his biography dates to 2013, and at Siena Jazz University since 2019. His official biography also lists festival appearances in Japan, the United States, Brazil, Taiwan and Africa; the Taiwan connection is documented on Mission Formosa's 2015 album on Alfa Music, where he plays alongside trumpeter Francesco Lento.

Partipilo's leader work through 2010 is tagged Post Bop and Contemporary Jazz on Discogs and sits close to the New York modern-jazz lineage of his sidemen, with Waits, Moreno, Brewer, Okazaki and Weiss, while I Like Too Much and Live in Clusone are tagged Avant-Garde Jazz, Free Jazz and Free Improvisation on Discogs and use live electronics. On The Right Place he thanks David Liebman, Greg Osby, Nicola Conte and others in the credits. As a flutist and alto player in Conte's group he is part of the Italian club-jazz and Latin-tinged records that came out of Bari on Schema, and with Boom Collective he turned to a groove-based, vocal-led sound that Discogs tags Neo Soul and Soul-Jazz. The through-line is a Bari-based network of players (Mirko Signorile, the Bardaro brothers, Giorgio Vendola, Fabio Accardi) that recurs on his records from 2002 to 2021.
