Luca Pirozzi is a Rome-based double bassist and electric bassist whose career runs from the city's jazz clubs of the mid-1980s to a nearly four-decade run as one of the scene's most recorded rhythm-section players. He came up playing the Roman jazz-club circuit and recording with established musicians as the scene rebuilt itself around Rome's clubs and studios; a 1986 appearance on the RAI variety show "Indietro Tutta," hosted by Renzo Arbore, marks one of his earliest documented credits. Since the summer of 2005 he has held the bass chair, on both double bass and electric bass, in the Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra (PMJO), the big band in residence at Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica under saxophonist Maurizio Giammarco, a tenure now approaching its third decade.

His discography (38 Discogs release-relationship credits, one as co-leader and the rest as a sideman) is overwhelmingly a jazz one: 33 of those 37 non-collision credits carry a Discogs "Jazz" genre tag. The core of that catalog runs through a handful of long-running Rome-based groups. He is a recurring bassist in Riccardo Fassi's Tankio Band, appearing on Notte (1991), Plays the Music of Frank Zappa (1995) and Serial Killer (2001, Splasc(h) Records), the latter alongside trumpeter Enrico Rava and accordionist Antonello Salis, both Discogs-confirmed on the same session. He plays on three albums led by the guitarist Lutte Berg, including Santa Sofia (1993, with Salis and the American reedman Paul McCandless) and Mascarò (1998, on which he also has a composer credit, alongside saxophonist Javier Girotto). He is the bassist across three albums by Gianni Savelli Media Res, the tenor saxophonist Gianni Savelli's working group: Que la fête commence (2009, Alfa Music) and Magellano (2015, Neuklang), and he and Savelli also cross paths in the PMJO's own Jazzitaliano Live 2007 (Casa del Jazz), recorded with the orchestra's full personnel. As a co-leader, his own name appears alongside pianist Alessandro Gwis and drummer Armando Sciommeri on the self-titled trio album Alessandro Gwis (2006, La Frontiera/Rai Trade), a set of Gwis compositions alternating with collective studio improvisation.

Elsewhere in his sideman work, Pirozzi is Discogs-confirmed on drummer Roberto Gatto's 1988 sideman dates Play of Light (Town Street) and Inside Colors (Fiorentino), the latter alongside bassist Enzo Pietropaoli, and on the 2011 album No Project by the group Emoticons, which features pianist Danilo Rea as a guest. He also plays electric bass on drummer Davide Pettirossi's Quartette Electrique (2005, Alfa Music/Rai Trade). Later credits include the tenor saxophonist Pino Jodice's trio and quartet records North Wind (2017) and Infinite Space (2018), and double bass on soprano Cinzia Tedesco's classical-jazz crossover recordings Verdi's Mood (2015) and Mister Puccini (2019, both Sony Classical).

Outside jazz proper, Pirozzi has worked as a session and touring bassist in Italian pop, credited on recordings and broadcasts connected to Mina, Lucio Dalla, Gianni Morandi, Nino D'Angelo and singer Mietta, and on the Sanremo-adjacent variety circuit that runs through much of Rome's studio-musician community; this side of his career is real but secondary to the jazz-club and big-band work that anchors his profile. He is also active as an educator, teaching jazz bass and double bass privately and through the Percentomusica school in Rome, and is the author of a bass method book, "Metodo per Basso Elettrico" (Method for Electric Bass), covering technique and fingering.

Pirozzi's catalog reflects a working Roman sideman's range rather than a single fixed sound: solid post-bop and hard-bop small-group playing with the Fassi Tankio Band and Lutte Berg, orchestral big-band bass in the PMJO, and the more contemporary-jazz and Latin-tinged material of the Gianni Savelli Media Res records. He moves between double bass and electric bass within the same sessions and sometimes the same track, a doubling common to Rome's studio-jazz generation of the 1980s, and it shows up as early as City Sound (1987) and as late as North Wind (2017) and Tales From Within (2018), both of which credit him on both instruments.
