Alessandro Lanzoni was born in Florence on March 25, 1992, into a family of musicians - both of his parents teach piano at classical conservatories, and he grew up practicing on two Steinways at home. He earned his piano diploma with top honors and a Menzione d'onore from the Conservatorio Cherubini in Florence in 2012, then returned to the same conservatory for a Laurea Specialistica in Composizione e Arrangiamento Jazz in 2015. Alongside that formal training he took part in master classes and clinics with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler at Bertinoro, workshops with Stefano Bollani and Franco D'Andrea, summer seminars at Siena Jazz, an Umbria Jazz clinic in Perugia in 2006, and a summer course at Berklee in 2007.

He was already appearing on major Italian festival bills as a teenager, and by his early twenties had toured Germany, Austria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Israel, the United States, China, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain. A 2007 solo piano recital at New York's Morgan Library was followed, the same year, by a solo performance at the United Nations building, where the critic Ira Gitler heard him play. His run of early honors includes the Premio Massimo Urbani (2006), first prize at Florence's Premio Luca Flores (2008), the Best Young Soloist award at the Martial Solal international piano competition in Paris (2010), the Memorial Tullio Besa (2014) and, most prominently, Top Jazz 2013 - Musica Jazz magazine's annual critics' poll named him Best New Talent of the year at age 21.

Lanzoni made his recording debut on the Philology label with a trilogy alongside bassist Ares Tavolazzi: the duo album I Should Care (2006), the trio record (with drummer Walter Paoli added) On the Snow (2007), and Poetical Lee - 81+15=96! (For Bill Evans) (2009), on which the same trio backed alto saxophonist Lee Konitz - the title's numbers are Konitz's and Lanzoni's respective ages at the Milan session. In 2012 he co-led Replay for Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica label with drummer Roberto Gatto and bassist Gabriele Evangelista, and that same year recorded as a sideman on Plays "The Connection" (Dreyfus Jazz), part of drummer Aldo Romano's "New Blood" band alongside saxophonist Baptiste Herbin and bassist Michel Benita.

A new working trio - bassist Matteo Bortone and drummer Enrico Morello, both met during an international jazz master's program at Siena Jazz - carried his three CAM Jazz albums of the 2010s: Dark Flavour (2013), Seldom (2014, with American trumpeter Ralph Alessi added as a featured guest across a program that includes three fully improvised piano-and-trumpet duets) and the unaccompanied solo record Diversions (2016). The label followed with Unplanned Ways (2019), a trio with American bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Eric McPherson built around repertoire by Billy Strayhorn, George Shearing, Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Rowles alongside freely improvised group pieces; the same trio reconvened the following year (recorded 2020, released 2021) for Mirage on the Barcelona label Fresh Sound New Talent, which Lanzoni also produced.

The early 2020s brought two collective and duo projects outside his own working trios: Xenya (2021, GleAM Records), a co-billed quintet with trumpeter Cosimo Boni, alto saxophonist Daniele Germani, bassist Francesco Ponticelli and drummer Roberto Giaquinto; and Arc Fiction (2021, Label MiRR), a duo of freely improvised and composed pieces with American trumpeter Hermon Mehari. He also recorded HAT: The Legendary Lost Album with bassist Gabriele Evangelista and drummer Tommaso Cappellato, a trio the three formed spontaneously as students in that same Siena Jazz program back in 2008 (its release-year is not consistent across sources - see this profile's notes file).

The Bortone/Morello trio resurfaced in 2024 for Reverse Motion (Jam/UnJam), a set of originals recorded twelve years after the three first played together, with alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso added as a featured guest across two prior tours. The same year, Lanzoni released Bouncing With Bud (Fresh Sound Records), an unaccompanied solo-piano tribute recorded at Cicaleto Recording Studio in Arezzo and built entirely around the music of bebop pioneer Bud Powell. His most recent album, Vida (2025, Fresh Sound New Talent), returned to a working-trio format with Evangelista on bass and American drummer Jeff Ballard.

Lanzoni's own published biography also names him as having performed alongside Kurt Rosenwinkel, Enrico Rava, Fabrizio Bosso, Rosario Giuliani, Larry Grenadier, Miguel Zenón, Michael Blake, Aaron Goldberg, Peter Bernstein, Ben Wendel and Gregory Hutchinson, together with Ambrose Akinmusire, Joe Sanders and Barbara Casini. Since 2023 Lanzoni has also served as artistic director of the Sesto Jazz festival in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, programming its 2023 through 2026 editions.

Lanzoni's catalogue runs on two parallel tracks. The larger one is a lyrical, repertoire-literate piano-trio mainstream: the Bortone/Morello trio's Dark Flavour, Seldom and Reverse Motion, and the Morgan/McPherson trio's Unplanned Ways and Mirage, the latter pair built in part around jazz repertory standards by Billy Strayhorn, George Shearing, Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Rowles. Bouncing With Bud (2024) makes that bebop lineage explicit, an entire unaccompanied solo album drawn from Bud Powell's book. Running alongside it is a more exploratory, collaborative-improvisation strand: Seldom's three fully improvised piano-trumpet duets with Ralph Alessi, the freely composed-and-improvised duo Arc Fiction with Hermon Mehari, and the collective quintet writing of Xenya. Reviewers describe his quintet work in that latter mode as sitting in "a post-bop dimension," and his own trio records have been characterized as pairing "maturity of approach" and "an intensely musical vision" with material ranging from jazz standards to fully spontaneous improvisation.
