Ziv Ravitz's name keeps turning up in the credits of artists already covered on this project, usually behind the kit, sometimes at the mixing desk, occasionally both on the same record. Born in Beersheba in 1976, he started drums at nine and was gigging professionally in Beer-Sheva and Tel Aviv clubs by thirteen. In 1999 he became the house drummer backing touring guest artists at Tel Aviv's Camelot Jazz Club, then moved to the United States in 2000 and graduated Berklee College of Music in 2004 with a degree in jazz composition before settling in Brooklyn.
There he co-founded Minsarah, a trio with pianist Florian Weber and bassist Jeff Denson. It became more than a side project: alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz chose Minsarah as his own working band, recording Deep Lee with them in 2008 and a live album at the Village Vanguard in 2010. Getting picked as a bebop-era legend's rhythm section in your twenties is not a small credential.
From there, Ravitz became one of the most-recorded sidemen in this project's network. He spent six years in the Shai Maestro Trio across four albums, played on Gilad Hekselman's Far Star, backed Omer Klein on three early records, and has a long-running relationship with pianist Yaron Herman, including producer credits on two of Herman's albums. He is also the drummer on three records with Avishai Cohen the trumpeter: Naked Truth, the electric fusion project Big Vicious, and Ashes to Gold.
He is not only behind the kit, either. Ravitz mixed Christoph Irniger Trio's Octopus and the Shai Maestro Trio's Untold Stories, and co-produced two Yaron Herman albums. As often as he is playing the session, he is running it.
As a leader, his catalog is smaller but distinct: Images From Home (2009), a cross-culture set drawing on Israeli folklore, American jazz, North African rhythm, and European classical music, then No Man Is An Island (2019), his first album as principal composer, built around a trio format with no piano or bass at all: just drums, saxophonist Will Vinson, and guitarist Nir Felder. His most recent release, Warp & Weft (2026, PK Musik), is a duo record with French saxophonist and clarinetist Christophe Panzani, built around the two of them continuously swapping who leads and who supports across eleven tracks recorded over two years, with the string quartet Quatuor Kaija guesting on two.
Ravitz's catalog resists a single genre label by design. His leader debut deliberately blended Israeli folklore, American jazz idiom, North African rhythm, and European classical music into one set. His two most recent leader projects each make a structural point: No Man Is An Island strips the piano and bass out of a standard jazz trio entirely, and Warp & Weft's core concept, continuously swapping who leads and who follows with duo partner Christophe Panzani, is a compositional idea as much as a playing style.
As a sideman, his range spans from the bebop-lineage rhythm section work that earned Minsarah its adoption by Lee Konitz, to the electric fusion of Avishai Cohen the trumpeter's Big Vicious project, to the more chamber-adjacent, piano-trio contexts of Shai Maestro and Oded Tzur. His parallel career as a mixer and producer, on his own collaborators' records as much as his own, suggests a musician as interested in the finished sound of a record as in his own part within it.
His two solo albums as principal composer, plus the brand-new Warp & Weft duo (structurally closer to Co-Leader billing but built and marketed as his own project's next chapter; included here since it's the anchor of final-blog.md).
