Lorenzo Simoni is an alto saxophonist and composer born on December 20, 1998, in Barga, a town in the Garfagnana area of Lucca province, Tuscany; his mother's family is from Barga and his father's from nearby Trassilico, and he now lives in Gragnano, in the municipality of Capannori, also in Lucca province. He started saxophone at eleven and went on to graduate with top honors and a special mention in classical saxophone from the Conservatorio "Pietro Mascagni" in Livorno, then completed a two-year advanced program at the Siena Jazz National Academy. In 2021 DaVinci Publishing brought out his first published composition, "Candela," written for solo alto saxophone. He has appeared as a classical soloist with the Boccherini Conservatory Orchestra in Lucca and the CAM Orchestra in Empoli, and he is an endorsing artist for D'Addario Woodwinds.

His main working group is the Lorenzo Simoni 4TET, a quartet of his own original compositions with pianist Guglielmo Santimone, double bassist Giulio Scianatico and drummer Simone Brilli, formed while he was still at Siena Jazz. The quartet won the Premio Marco Tamburini and the Tomorrow's Jazz Prize in 2022, both awarded at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and the third edition of the Premio Isio Saba on November 16, 2023, at the Teatro Massimo in Cagliari, a prize named for the Sardinian jazz pioneer Isio Saba that carries 3,000 euros and a slot at the Jazz in Sardegna festival. In 2024 the quartet won the BargaJazz Contest, and in August 2026 Simoni opened the BargaJazz Festival's main program with a set alongside American trumpeter Jason Palmer, according to local press coverage of the festival. The group has not released a studio album; its documented output so far is festival and club dates (Pisa Jazz, MetJazz at Teatro Metastasio in Prato, Casa del Jazz in Rome, Jazzclub Ferrara, Teatro La Fenice) and individual compositions posted to YouTube, including "What's Your Concept?" (posted January 31, 2024) and "Melted Princess."

In 2022, the same year he finished his studies, Simoni and fellow Siena Jazz graduate Iacopo Teolis (trumpet) formed the duo Simoni:Teolis. Their debut album, Openings (Emme Record Label), was released on May 30, 2024: ten tracks for saxophone and trumpet alone, with no rhythm section, built from Simoni's original compositions and some fully improvised pieces. Jazz Convention's review pointed to Bach, Hindemith, Steve Reich and Stravinsky as well as video-game soundtracks and contemporary players such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Ben Wendel as reference points, and praised the interplay between the two voices. The duo presented the record at Casa del Jazz in Rome on December 8, 2024, as part of the venue's Take Five series. Openings is not listed on Discogs.

As a sideman, Simoni's Discogs-verified alto saxophone credits run from 2022 to 2025: Edoardo Liberati's Everyday Life (GleAM Records, 2022), on which Iacopo Teolis also plays trumpet; drummer-composer Mauro Patti's Telamon (Dodicilune, 2023), alongside trumpeter Giovanni Falzone and soprano saxophonist Guglielmo Pagnozzi; trombonist Matteo Paggi's Giraffe (Jam/UnJam, 2025); pianist Vittorio Solimene's Letter to... (Encore Music, 2025); and vibraphonist Alessandro Bianchini's My Space 24 (Birdbox Records, 2025), on which double bassist Giacomo Papetti also appears, alongside drummer Simone Brilli, who plays in Simoni's own quartet. A separate credit, a 2021 recording of "Tribute to Chick Corea (La Fiesta)" billed to Alma Saxophone Quartet & Lorenzo Simoni and found on Apple Music, could not be confirmed on Discogs and is not treated here as a verified release; Discogs' own listing for Alma Saxophone Quartet, a 2023 album led by Argentine saxophonist Javier Girotto, does not credit Simoni.

Alongside his sideman and jazz-scene work, Simoni tours in a classical chamber duo with pianist Susanna Pagano, playing classical saxophone repertoire and his own compositions, and in February 2026 he had a tour scheduled with singer and multi-instrumentalist Gegè Telesforo. He has also appeared as a guest on RaiTre's "Via dei Matti n. 0," hosted by Stefano Bollani. His own biography and press coverage name collaborations with Jason Palmer, Nasheet Waits, Mario Marzi, Greg Burk, Christian Lauba, Giovanni Tommaso, Javier Girotto, Enrico Rava and Stefano Di Battista, and performances at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston, the Blue Note in Milan, the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Chigiana International Festival in Siena and Umbria Jazz; these are self-reported credits rather than itemized recordings.

Simoni runs two careers side by side, competing at a professional level in both classical saxophone and jazz rather than treating one as a sideline of the other. His quartet plays his own postbop-rooted original compositions, built for the standard sax-piano-bass-drums lineup. The duo with Teolis works from the opposite instrumentation, a purely acoustic two-voice format that draws as much on Bach, Hindemith and Stravinsky as on the jazz and video-game references also cited by reviewers, closer to a chamber-music conversation than a conventional jazz horn pairing. His parallel chamber-duo work with pianist Susanna Pagano, playing straight classical saxophone repertoire alongside his own pieces, and his 2021 solo composition "Candela," published as classical sheet music, both belong to the same crossover thread that runs through his recorded work.
