Dario Congedo found the drums the way a lot of eleven-year-olds find an obsession: through a movie trailer. Seeing the trailer for Highlander, scored to Queen's "Princess of the Universe," was enough to send him building makeshift drum kits out of whatever was in the house, years before his family could afford a real one. By fourteen he was playing around Puglia; by seventeen he was on his first tour, working through rock, punk, metal and progressive rock before jazz and Latin music pulled him in a different direction. He studied with Maurizio dei Lazzaretti and Fabrizio Sferra in Rome and Siena, then formalized the training at the Conservatory of Music "Tito Schipa" in Lecce, taking an undergraduate degree in percussion in 2005 and a Master of Music with a concentration in chamber music in 2009, graduating cum laude with a perfect score of 110/110. The same year he studied jazz at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. New York came next: lessons with John Riley, Matt Wilson, Jonathan Blake, Jim Black, Ernesto Simpson and Vince Cherico put him inside the working vocabulary of contemporary American jazz drumming rather than just its recordings.

His own catalogue as a leader is small and deliberate. Nàdan (Blue Serge, 2009) introduced the working group he still returns to in spirit if not always in personnel - saxophonist Raffaele Casarano, bassist Marco Bardoscia and trumpeter Giorgio Distante - built around Congedo's drums, kalimba, percussion and electronics. Calligrafie (Desuonatori, 2013) continued under the same "Dario Congedo e Nàdan" billing as part of a self-produced batch of three releases from the Salento collective Desuonatori. Don't Quit (Workin' Label, 2020) reset the format to a trio with French pianist Dorian Dumont and bassist Federico Pecoraro, recorded in January 2019 at Sudestudio in Guagnano and released that January 30 as a fully instrumental record that Italian jazz press placed somewhere between contemporary European jazz and avant-garde.

Between and around those three records sits two decades of sideman work that traces the shape of the post-2000 Puglia jazz scene. Discogs credits him on 25 separate releases from 2002 to 2021: early dates with bassist Marco Bardoscia and pianist-composer Ettore Carucci, a run of records for the Workin' Label roster (singer Carolina Bubbico's Controvento and Una Donna, composer Emanuele Coluccia's Birthplace, the Francesco Del Prete Jazz Ensemble's Colibrì, bassist Marcello Zappatore's Susco), several dates for the modern-jazz label AUAND (Niccolò Faraci's It Came to Broadcast the Yucatan, and saxophonist Gaetano Partipilo's Boom Collective and Leave&Meet, alongside Partipilo's separate Daylight with the Contemporary Five), a chair in the Kekko Fornarelli Trio for Outrush, drums on Brazilian-Italian singer Rosalia De Souza's Tempo, and a late credit on singer-songwriter Chiara Civello's Chansons. In 2014 he played drums on trumpeter Luca Aquino's covermount record Rock 4.0, released with the July 2014 issue of Musica Jazz alongside Javier Girotto, Raffaele Casarano and Antonio Jasevoli. A track-level Discogs credit also puts his drumming on two Nicola Conte remixes of New Cool Collective and Matt Bianco tracks issued on 2016's The Things You Love.

Congedo also carries a substantial career in Italian pop and singer-songwriter session and touring work, alongside artists including Eugenio Finardi, Ron, Federico Zampaglione and Tosca, and he leads the Salento folk-jazz group Tirica Ucala on the side. That work runs concurrently with, rather than instead of, his jazz leader catalogue and conservatory teaching post, in the same pattern this project has already documented for other Italian jazz musicians who also do studio and touring work outside jazz.

Congedo's route into jazz ran backwards from most drummers on this roster: rock, punk, metal and prog first, jazz and Latin music second, arriving at the Conservatory of Music "Tito Schipa" already a working gigging musician rather than a student finding the instrument for the first time. That order shows in his playing and in his own records. Nàdan and Calligrafie treat the drum kit as one texture among several - kalimba, synthesizer, reversed vocals - rather than the sole rhythmic engine, a production sensibility closer to the Desuonatori self-production collective's electronics-and-improvisation ethos than to a straight-ahead trio date. Don't Quit, by contrast, is the more conventional piano-bass-drums jazz trio record, and the one that reads most directly as a result of his New York study with John Riley, Matt Wilson, Jonathan Blake and Jim Black - a lineage of drummers who each treat time-keeping as compositional material rather than pure accompaniment.

As a sideman his range is wide by design: the acoustic post-bop and modern-jazz world of AUAND and the Kekko Fornarelli Trio on one side, the club-jazz and nu-jazz orbit of Rosalia De Souza and a Nicola Conte remix credit on the other, and a substantial parallel career backing Italian pop and cantautore artists. The constant across all of it is a drummer who reads as a first-call sideman for a specific regional scene - Salento and greater Puglia - as much as a leader in his own right.
