Avant-garde jazz developed in the United States from the late 1950s onward as musicians pushed beyond bebop's harmonic conventions toward greater structural, tonal, and textural experimentation, while often retaining some composed material unlike the fully collective improvisation of free jazz. It is marked by unconventional forms, extended instrumental techniques, dissonance, and a willingness to abandon steady tempo or fixed chord changes. Pianist Cecil Taylor, saxophonist Eric Dolphy, and bandleader Sun Ra are among its most influential early figures.
