Francesca Remigi is a drummer, composer and improviser from the Bergamo area of Lombardy, born in 1996 and now based between Bergamo and Berlin. She grew up in a musical family and began studying guitar and drums at age 5, then spent five years on classical piano while attending a private drum academy. She took a bachelor's degree in jazz drumming performance at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan in 2017, with an Erasmus year in the Netherlands, and finished a master's degree in jazz performance at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels in 2020, studying with the Belgian drummer Stéphane Galland. That same year she won a full scholarship to the Berklee Global Jazz Institute master's program, directed by pianist Danilo Pérez, where her teachers included bassist Linda May Han Oh, pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, according to her official biography. Earlier residencies included Siena Jazz in 2018 and, in 2019, the Banff Centre jazz workshop directed by Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey.

Her band Archipélagos formed in Brussels in 2019 and brought together musicians from six countries: Claire Parsons (vocals, effects), trumpeter Niran Dasika, pianist Simon Groppe, bassist Ramon van Merkenstein and clarinetist Federico Calcagno. The group won the All You Have to Do Is Play contest run by Emme Record Label in 2019 and was a finalist at the Maastricht Jazz Awards in 2020. Its debut album, Il Labirinto Dei Topi (Emme, January 2021), was recorded in Rome in July 2020 and takes its material from writing by Noam Chomsky, Zygmunt Bauman, Roberto Saviano and Samuel Huntington, pairing rhythmically strict, Carnatic-influenced compositions with passages of free improvisation. Saxophonist Steve Lehman has described it as one of the most exciting debut albums he had heard in recent memory. Musica Jazz's reviewer heard a "boiling and magmatic" jazz that mixes avant-garde, free jazz, contemporary classical, South Indian classical music and progressive rock.

Recognition followed quickly. She won the Nuova Generazione Jazz 2021 project run by the Italia Jazz and MIDJ associations and the Barga Jazz Contest with Archipélagos in 2021. In January 2022 Musica Jazz's Top Jazz critics' poll named her best new talent, a prize she shared with violinist Anaïs Drago, while Archipélagos took second place as best Italian project of the year. In 2022 she also won the SIAE Award and the Best Soloist Award at the Getxo Jazz Competition, and she was a finalist for New Music USA's Next Jazz Legacy Award in 2023 and 2024. With the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Ambassadors band she won first prize at the Keep an Eye International Award in 2023. Later grants and prizes include SIAE's Per Chi Crea in 2023, Pathways to Jazz in 2024, and the Brutal REvolution Award and Marco Birro Award (Olimpico Jazz Contest) in 2025.

Her second album as leader, The Human Web (Habitable Records, March 23, 2022), is an eight-track concept album about how social media affects mental health, identity and public life. It was recorded remotely from participants' homes in 2021 and features Federico Calcagno on bass clarinet and Anaïs Drago on violin, among more than twenty guests; her own site quotes Linda May Han Oh and drummer Dan Weiss praising it. Habitable is the independent label she co-founded, and it also released her duo album with the American guitarist Killick Hinds, Empowered Kind (December 2022), her Calcagno-Subatin-Remigi trio record Confini Labili (August 2022), and her duo album with clarinetist Fabian Mösch, Hoarse (March 6, 2026). Hoarse was recorded during a Pro Helvetia residency in Venice, and the duo played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2025. Her third album as leader, WITCHESS (Hora Records, November 7, 2025), is a concept album with vocalist and flutist Andrea Giordano and guitarist Silvia Cignoli, built on the writing of Angela Davis and Silvia Federici about gender violence, race and capitalism.

Her other regular groups are the Subconscious Trio with pianist Monique Chao and bassist Victoria Kirilova, formed in Milan in 2015, whose debut Water Shapes (Da Vinci Jazz, June 2022) led to a seven-date Taiwan tour in 2023, and Gogoducks, the bass-less trio with guitarist Luca Zennaro and vibraphonist Paolo Peruzzi that released Palladio A Palla! (September 2024) after appearing at Umbria Jazz in 2022. She also co-leads Assemblaggi (Bacán, 2025) with Giulio Stermieri, Noemi Fiorucci and Michele Zanasi, and works in the trio Echòra, the KORALE Korean-Italian quartet, and the Tuscany Music Revolution improvising collective, in which Calcagno also plays.

As a sideman she has recorded with guitarist Livio Bartolo (Start From Scratch, Dodicilune, 2022, with Drago on violin) and appears on Camilla Battaglia's ELEkTRA (Ropeadope, 2024), and she plays drums on Calcagno's Face the Music (2025). Her official biography lists a European tour with the Danilo Pérez Quartet in May 2022, a spring 2024 tour with Dee Dee Bridgewater's WE EXIST! quartet, a long list of collaborators that includes saxophonists Nicole Glover and Sharel Cassity, and appearances at the London Jazz Festival, DC Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival 2024 and Bergamo Jazz. She joined pianist Alexander Hawkins's Dialect Quintet, which also includes bassist Ferdinando Romano, and in 2025 she began touring with the Italian jazz-pop singers Mario Biondi and Simona Molinari. She became an associate professor at Siena Jazz University in 2025, and her solo project Empowered Drums, an augmented drum kit, is the subject of her doctoral research.

Remigi writes long-form, concept-driven music in which strict rhythmic architecture, influenced by Carnatic music, sits beside radical free improvisation. Her own biography and interviews cite progressive rock (Dream Theater, Rush, Porcupine Tree), the Pat Metheny Group, Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Return to Forever, the electric Miles Davis, Avishai Cohen, Tigran Hamasyan, Steve Coleman and Jen Shyu, and the description of Archipélagos on her site adds contemporary classical music, electronic music and free jazz. Each of her leader albums starts from a non-musical text or theme: sociology and political theory on Il Labirinto Dei Topi, social media on The Human Web, feminist theory on WITCHESS. Her more recent duo and solo work turns toward electronics, tape recorders, transducers and an augmented drum kit.

Her catalog is overwhelmingly jazz, but she has taken occasional session work outside the genre, including drums on a 2016 indie-rock album by the band Qualunque and a track on a 2025 Mandopop album by Tarcy Su, and she plays in Mario Biondi's and Simona Molinari's jazz-pop bands.

She is also active in the institutional side of the scene: she co-founded Habitable Records, is listed as a board member of an Italian jazz musicians' association, and is an alumna of the Berklee Jazz & Gender Justice Institute.
