Nicola Guazzaloca is a pianist, composer and improviser from Bologna, born in 1975, who has spent more than two decades at the center of Italy's free-improvisation scene. He started out in Bologna's underground music scene in the late 1980s before moving into jazz and experimental music in the 1990s, developing what his own biography describes as a personal approach to composing, organizing and improvising music. In the early 2000s he attended masterclasses and workshops with Muhal Richard Abrams, Barre Phillips, Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker and Anthony Braxton, and he became a member of bassist Barre Phillips' large ensemble Fete Foreign as well as improvising groups led by the cellist Tristan Honsinger, both formative influences on his approach to group improvisation.
Guazzaloca's recorded discography runs to more than fifty releases, mostly as leader or co-leader, on a cluster of small labels built around the European free-improvisation circuit: Leo Records, Setola Di Maiale, Amirani Records, Aut Records, FMR Records, Not Two Records and Klopotec among them. His first duo record, One Hot Afternoon (2008, Leo Records) with the English reedman Tim Trevor-Briscoe, began a long-running partnership; the two went on to form a trio with the Serbian-Hungarian violist Szilárd Mezei that recorded Underflow (2011, Leo Records), Cantiere Simone Weil (2016, Aut Records), Exuvia (2017, FMR Records) and the four-CD live box set Before Then (2022, Not Two Records). A separate and equally long-running duo with the tenor and sopranino saxophonist Edoardo Marraffa dates back to Glück Auf (2008, Setola Di Maiale) and continued through Les Ravageurs (2016, Klopotec) and Em Portugal! (2018, SPMII), the latter recorded under the banner of the Scuola Popolare di Musica Ivan Illich in Bologna, where Guazzaloca has taught since 2006.
He released his first solo piano record, Tecniche Arcaiche, in 2013 on Amirani Records; it was named among the year's best Italian records by Musica Jazz, and he documented it again live for Tecniche Arcaiche (Live At Angelica) (2015, Aut Records/Amirani Records), recorded during Bologna's AngelicA festival. Since around 2016 he has also led Tell No Lies, a Bologna-based quintet (expanded to a larger horn section on 2025's Mantica) for which he composes and plays piano; the group's records include Anasyrma (2020) and Hide Nothing (2022), both on Aut Records, and both drew reviews from All About Jazz. A separate duo with the cellist Francesco Guerri runs from the 2010 record Nestor Makhno, named for the Ukrainian anarchist, through to 2025's Keep Your Hands Free (The Angelica And Mavarta Concerts) on Aut Records. Gianni Mimmo, the soprano saxophonist who runs Amirani Records, has been a duo and trio partner since the London- and Brussels-recorded Shoreditch Trio sessions of 2009-2010, continuing through HerbstReise (2023).
Guazzaloca has performed at festivals and venues across Italy, Germany, England, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, the Netherlands, France and Belgium. Since 2021 he has also spent periods based in Madrid, working with local musicians there, while remaining active in Bologna. All About Jazz has reviewed several of his records over the years, including Anasyrma, Cantiere Simone Weil and Em Portugal!, and Musica Jazz's best-of-year recognition for Tecniche Arcaiche is the clearest outside institutional marker of his standing within Italian jazz criticism.
Guazzaloca works almost entirely within free improvisation, in duo, trio and small-group settings built around close listening rather than fixed compositions, though his own Tell No Lies quintet plays through pieces he composes and arranges for the group. His stated influences run through the same lineage as his teachers and mentors: the AACM circle (Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton), the bassist Barre Phillips, and the cellist Tristan Honsinger, whose Italian improvising circles he has worked within since early in his career. Reviewers writing for All About Jazz have described his piano playing across these duo and trio contexts as combining a broad vocabulary of improvisational technique with a role that is often directive from the keyboard even when his own soloing is comparatively restrained, adding, as one 2022 live review put it, "precious elements to the overall fabric" through counterpoint with the horns around him. His music sits within jazz's free and avant-garde wings rather than its mainstream or standards repertoire; discography-wide, Discogs classifies the bulk of his catalog under Free Improvisation, Free Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz and Contemporary Jazz style tags.
Discogs artist page 1658787 ("Nicola Guazzaloca"), profile text "Italian Jazz pianist and composer, born in 1975 in Bologna, Italy," name variations "Guazzaloca," "N.Guazzaloca," with group affiliations to Aghe Clope Ensemble, Bologna Improvisers Orchestra, Transition, Tell No Lies and PUI4. Discogs lists 97 release and master entries with a credit for him. Five Tell No Lies releases that Discogs' own role field files as "Appearance" or "Producer" are moved into the Leader / Co-Leader table below because the release-level credits confirm Guazzaloca as the group's pianist and composer on all five, not a guest; this is noted in each row.
