Piero Bittolo Bon (born Pietro Bittolo Bon) is an Italian saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer working in the jazz, free jazz and avant-garde scenes. He grew up around Venice, attending the Liceo Ginnasio "Marco Polo" there from 1990 to 1995, and is mainly self-taught on his instruments: he picked up the alto saxophone at fourteen, on a gift from his parents, and spent roughly four years practicing mornings and sitting in on jam sessions at Bar Torino in Venice before turning professional. He started out on electric bass in funk, reggae and rock bands before committing to winds and improvised music, and has been a freelance musician since 1999.

Bittolo Bon relocated from Venice to Ferrara, where he has been based for most of his career. In Ferrara he became a founding member of El Gallo Rojo Records, a self-run musicians' collective and label, handling its online sales management from 2008 to 2016 alongside fellow members Danilo Gallo, Alfonso Santimone and Giorgio Pacorig. The four of them recorded together as a free-improvising quartet on The Crypt: Act I / The Bisiakistan Renegades (2011, Punto Rojo), with Bittolo Bon on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet. He later founded his own netlabel, R'Ufo Records, in 2011.

His main working group is the quintet Bread & Fox, with Filippo Vignato on trombone, Alfonso Santimone on piano, Glauco Benedetti on tuba and baritone horn, and Andrea Grillini on drums, documented on Big Hell On Air (2016, Auand) and the live album This Is Sour Music (2019, Trouble in the East, recorded in Berlin). Earlier, he led the sextet Piero Bittolo Bon Jump The Shark for about eight years, with records including Ohmlaut (2011) and IUVENES DOOM SUMUS (2014, featuring Domenico Caliri on guitars and Danilo Gallo on bass). Since 2015 he has co-directed the Tower Jazz Composers Orchestra, the resident big band of Jazz Club Ferrara at the Torrione San Giovanni venue, together with Alfonso Santimone; its personnel on the 2019 self-titled album included Andrea Grillini on drums, Glauco Benedetti on tuba and Federico Pierantoni on trombone.

Since 2018 he has also toured and recorded as SPELUNKER, a solo project built around an amplified alto saxophone fitted with a custom contact-microphone system, releasing (mĭth′rĭ-dā′tĭz′əm) I (2020) and Spelunker (2023). A genuine cross-Atlantic pairing came in 2014 with The Sauna Session (PBB's Lacus Amoenus), a quartet record with American trumpeter Peter Evans, guitarist Simone Massaron, drummer Tommaso Cappellato and Glauco Benedetti on tuba. He was also credited on baritone saxophone and clarinet on Mucho Acustica (2011), a record by Piero Bittolo Bon & His Original Pigneto Stompers featuring bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma.

Bittolo Bon has recorded widely across Italy's independent free-jazz and improvised-music labels, appearing on records led by Francesco Cusa (Jaruzelski's Dream, and the Skrunch project's Jacques Lacan, A True Musical Story, 2009), Mondongo, Crisco 3, the Beirut-based producer Rabih Beaini's Upperground Orchestra, the Danish-Italian group On Dog (with Francesco Bigoni and Danish guitarist Mark Solborg), the guitar trio Rollerball (with Enrico Terragnoli, Danilo Gallo and Beppe Scardino), drummer Tiziano Tononi's several ensembles (The Ornettians, Southbound, the Pahà Sàpa Ensemble and The Fuzzmen, the last alongside American bassist Joe Fonda), the Dinamitri Open Combo (with Dimitri Grechi Espinoza and Emanuele Parrini), and the free-improvising Ecatorf Trio, among many others. He was also one of the reed players on the Unscientific Italians' two-volume tribute Play the Music of Bill Frisell (2021-2022), arranged and conducted by Alfonso Santimone. His playing was singled out in Musica Jazz's 2010 Top Jazz critics' referendum, and a track featuring him appears on the magazine's Top Jazz 2010 compilation.

Bittolo Bon's own artist biography also names collaborations with Anthony Braxton and pianist Uri Caine (as part of Caine's "Pulse" project); these are stated on his own site but are not independently verified against a specific Discogs-documented recording, so they are noted here as a biographical claim rather than a confirmed credit.

Alongside performing, Bittolo Bon has taught improvisation technique at the Venice music school Il Suono Improvviso (2010-2016), jazz saxophone and clarinet at the ISSM "Luigi Boccherini" conservatory in Lucca (2018/2019), jazz ensemble music at the Conservatorio "O. Respighi" in Latina (2020/2021), and, since 2019, jazz saxophone and ensemble music at the Conservatorio "Pietro Mascagni" in Livorno, where he continues to teach.

Bittolo Bon's core instrument is the alto saxophone, played with a bold, razor-edged tone that has drawn comparisons to Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Tim Berne and Henry Threadgill; he moves freely between alto and baritone saxophone, flute, bass flute, clarinet, alto clarinet and bass clarinet, and occasionally returns to the electric bass and analog synthesizers he played early in his career. His catalog spans dense, fully notated composition and completely free improvisation, often within the same album, and draws on the vocabulary of free jazz and fire music as much as on chamber-scale composition. As a member of the musician-run El Gallo Rojo collective and, later, the Tower Jazz Composers Orchestra, he has spent much of his career inside self-organized, collectively run ensembles rather than conventional bandleader structures, and his SPELUNKER solo project extends that experimental streak into amplified and processed solo saxophone.

The Tower Tapes Series: Photography and Artwork Credit, Not a Musical Collaboration (10 releases)

Between 2020 and 2020, Jazz Club Ferrara's label issued ten live concert recordings under the title "The Tower Tapes," documenting visiting American musicians who performed at the Torrione San Giovanni venue. Bittolo Bon's Discogs artist page lists all ten as "Appearance" credits, and his role, confirmed at the release-credit level, is photography and artwork, not performance; he does not play on these recordings. Listed here for completeness rather than under Personnel & Collaborations, since a photography credit is not a recording collaboration.

Biography-Only Claims Not Reflected in This Discography

Bittolo Bon's own website biography names collaborations with Anthony Braxton and pianist Uri Caine (as part of Caine's "Pulse" project). Neither name appears anywhere in his 109-entry Discogs release-relationship list, so these are not reflected as credits above; they are noted in final-profile.md as a stated but unverified biographical claim.
