Stefano Giust is a drummer, percussionist, composer and label-runner born on March 22, 1968, in Unterseen, near Interlaken, Switzerland, to Italian parents. The family moved to Pordenone, in Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, when he was seven, and Pordenone has been his home base ever since, apart from a five-year stretch living in Marzabotto, in the hills outside Bologna, from 2012 to 2017. He began recording his own music at fourteen, in 1982, and by his own account and Discogs' artist profile has spent more than four decades working across "the broad spectrum of improvised and experimental music," a catalogue that runs from acoustic free improvisation to turntables, tape manipulation, computer pieces and minimal techno.
In 1993 he co-founded Setola di Maiale with Paolo De Piaggi, a record label devoted to creative and experimental music that has since grown to more than 500 titles and some 700 musicians worldwide; Giust has run it ever since, effectively making him both a prolific performer and the documentarian of his own scene. Of the 97 releases and masters on which Discogs credits him as the billed leader or co-leader, 81 carry the genre tag Jazz, with Free Improvisation, Free Jazz and Avant-Garde Jazz as the dominant styles; the exceptions cluster in his earliest, most electronic solo cassette and CDr work from the 1990s and early 2000s. His working groups over four decades have included Margine, Ipersensity and Babelis Project with electronics player Daniele Pagliero, GBUR with Dominik Gawara, the duo Squame with guitarist Alessandro Boscolo, the trio MAGIMC with pianist Thollem McDonas and saxophonist Edoardo Marraffa, Transition with pianist Nicola Guazzaloca and flutist Nils Gerold, and, in the 2010s and 2020s, a long-running partnership with pianist Giorgio Pacorig spanning the Aghe Clope Ensemble, the Mahakaruna Quartet and a series of duo and small-group records that runs from Live At Italian Jazz Rebels (2005) through La Saggezza Degli Elefanti (2026), the 500th title in the Setola di Maiale catalogue.
His discography also documents a wide international address book: Free Improvised Music! Wien '09 (2010) and Three Nights In Berlin (2010) capture ad hoc ensembles recorded on tour in Austria and Germany, Being Together: Hanoi New Music Festival Ensemble 2013 documents a Vietnamese residency, and Live Spomen Dom (2016) was recorded in Croatia. The most internationally prominent of these is Live At Angelica 2018 (Setola di Maiale), credited to the Setoladimaiale Unit with British saxophonist Evan Parker on soprano and tenor sax alongside Giust on drums; it was recorded live at Angelica, the Bologna festival for which Giust has curated concerts since 2016, the year he also first performed there in a quartet with Pacorig, Giovanni Maier and Massimo De Mattia that was later issued as Desidero Vedere, Sento (2018).
Giust's catalogue runs on two parallel tracks that rarely overlap within a single record. One is acoustic free improvisation on drum kit and hand percussion, often stripped down to a duo or trio with a horn or guitar player and built entirely in the moment; the Discogs style tags across his 97 leader and co-leader credits read Free Improvisation on 80 of them, with Free Jazz and Avant-Garde Jazz as the next most common descriptors. The other is an electronic and turntable-based practice, mostly from the first half of his career, using tape loops, samplers and prepared electronics, which Discogs tags separately as Electronic with styles Experimental and Minimal Techno; this side of his work places him as much in the European DIY cassette-culture tradition as in jazz, and is the reason his catalogue carries a genuine non-jazz minority rather than a uniform one. Running underneath both is his role as Setola di Maiale's founder and curator, which has put him on record with several hundred other improvisers over three decades, from close, recurring Italian partners such as Pacorig, Gianni Gebbia and Guido Mazzon to international visitors passing through the label's orbit, most notably Evan Parker.
