Enrico Terragnoli is a guitarist, banjoist and electric bassist from Verona whose career runs through the parts of Italian jazz that overlap with rock, klezmer, fado, ambient music and noise. Italian Wikipedia gives his birth as 18 October 1962 in Verona (Wikidata lists the same date with Milan as the birthplace). Discogs sums him up in two words, "Jazz guitarist," and credits him on more than a hundred releases across his own artist page and the ensembles he belongs to; Caligola Records' biography puts him on the Italian jazz scene since the mid-1980s and on more than seventy recordings as instrumentalist, leader or co-leader. After a diploma in music theory at the Dall'Abaco Conservatory in Verona, he began his jazz career in Verona.

He began in 1986 by founding the Tu Whit Tu Whoo Trio with flutist Stefano Benini and percussionist Sbibu Sguazzabia. The trio made four albums between 1989 and 2000 - Tu Whit, Tu Whoo (recorded September 1989 at the Il Posto studio in Verona), Gradini Di Dúva (1990), L'Ombra (1994) and Ascriptum (2000) - and wrote music for the theatre pieces of Duilio Del Prete. In 1987 he joined NAD (Neu Abdominaux Dangereux), an experimental electronics-and-guitar group that won the "Indipendenti 1987" contest run by the magazine Fare Musica. Their 1989 album Ghosts, recorded in Modena and at Baby Monster Studio in New York in December 1988 and mixed in part by Elliott Sharp, carries Terragnoli's composer credit on eight tracks; Italian Wikipedia lists guests including Fred Frith, Sonny Sharrock and Christian Marclay, and notes the record's place in Enrico Merlin's book 1000 dischi per un secolo.

The same Verona scene produced the University Jazz Project, an ad hoc ensemble recorded live at the University of Verona on 3 February 1991 for the ARTIS album Live in Verona: Beppe Castellani on tenor saxophone, Cristina Mazza on alto, English drummer Tony Oxley, Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger, horn player Martin Mayes, bassist Gianni Sabbioni, Sbibu and Terragnoli on electric guitar, who is also credited as soloist and composer on some of the five tracks. Two more records from that circle followed in 1994: Sybil, billed to the Beppe Castellani Group with Terragnoli on guitar and effects, and Lanxsatura, on which he is the guitarist behind Mazza and vocalist Lorena Fontana. The same group records as Rains and made Apokalyptische Stadt, recorded live with no overdubs in November 1999; Italian Wikipedia also lists a 2008 Rains album, U47.

His longest-running jazz partnership begins in 1993, when he recorded Cagliostro with drummer Zeno De Rossi and bassist Gianni Sabbioni. With De Rossi and tenor saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti he then formed the Kaiser Lupowitz Trio, which made two CDs: Dommage! (1997, General Records), billed with guest Kurt Rosenwinkel, and You Don't! (1998, Stereosupremo), recorded on 23 June 1998 with guests Briggan Krauss, Jay Rodriguez and Joshua Roseman. Discogs credits him as writer of tracks 3, 4 and 6 to 8 of You Don't!, among them "Aria (For Thomas Chapin)." He kept working with Bearzatti afterward as a guest: guitar on two tracks of the Bizart Trio's Virus (2003, Auand), where the trio includes drummer Aldo Romano, on track 5 of its follow-up Hope (2004), which also features trumpeter Enrico Rava, and on Bearzatti's live Tinissima Special Edition (2016, Casa del Jazz).

In 2005 he was among the founders of El Gallo Rojo, the collective and record label whose path he shared, per Italian Wikipedia, for more than a decade. His own contribution there is the Enrico Terragnoli Orchestra Vertical and its album L'Anniversaire, a studio band of 16 credited musicians that includes bass clarinetist Achille Succi, bassist Danilo Gallo and Bearzatti on tenor saxophone. Around it sit the bands he co-leads or plays in: Mickey Finn (Dudek!, 2006, and Gagarin, 2009, with trumpeter Cuong Vu), Houdini's Cage (Memories of a Barber, 2008, with bassist Greg Cohen), Rollerball (La Clinica Del Rasoio and Post Amen, 2013, with baritone saxophonist Beppe Scardino and Gallo), The Humans (It's Nine O'Clock, 2011), the Leaping Fish Trio (Sankofa, 2012, with Paolo Botti and De Rossi), Full Metal Klezmer (Shachor, 2005), Zeno De Rossi's Sultry and Shtik, and a duo album with Franco Dal Monego, 9 CODE (2011). He also worked behind the console: Discogs credits him with mixing, mastering, editing or recording on 32 releases. They include Ecce Combo by pianist Alfonso Santimone's Laser Pigs, Dimitri Sillato's Schwarze Seele (2013), Da Lontano Era Un'Isola (2010), billed to Nelide Bandello, Giulio Corini and Stefano Battaglia, and, as mastering engineer, La Giostra (2025), the album by Guano Padano and Enrico Rava.

Outside his own bands he is a working sideman with a long list of credits. He plays electric guitar and banjo in trombonist Mauro Ottolini's Sousaphonix on records from 2009 to 2017 (among them The Sky Above Braddock, on which accordionist and pianist Antonello Salis guests, Bix Factor and Buster Kluster), is the guitarist on both volumes of Franco D'Andrea's Octet project Intervals (2018, Parco della Musica), and appears with Helga Plankensteiner's Plankton, Vanessa Tagliabue Yorke (Contradanza, Diverso Lontano Incomprensibile), Paolo Botti's Fabbrica dei Botti (Lomax Lives!, with alto saxophonist Dimitri Grechi Espinoza), Gabriele Mitelli's O.N.G. (Crash, 2017, with drummer Cristiano Calcagnile) and bassist Rosa Brunello. Away from jazz he plays bass in the Portuguese fado group Feira Lusa, banjo in the Kinder Klezmer quartet, and has written scores for the contemporary-dance company Ersiliadanza of Laura Corradi, including Chimera (1998, Festival di Spoleto) and Butterfly (2010). He wrote a guitar manual, Chitarra elettrica: manuale di base (Demetra, 1997), and lists festival dates at Umbria Jazz, Torino Jazz, Clusone, Udine Jazz, JazzMi, Jazz à Vienne in France and the Bansko International Jazz Festival in Bulgaria.

His recent work is again mostly his own. E.R.Z., his trio with double bassist Rosa Brunello and De Rossi, released Minesweeper (Caligola, 2018), seven pieces all composed by him and recorded without overdubbing on 8 and 9 January 2018, played without breaks as a single suite. Rifugi (Aut Records, 2023) is a trio record with drummer Filippo Sala and Gallo, recorded on 30 March 2023 at Monolith Studio in Brescia, with Terragnoli on electric guitar and electric organ and also mixing and mastering; Sala's Maree (Aut Records, 2026) lists him as well. NAD, whose Discogs entry lists him as a member, released three more records between 2014 and 2017, the ambient trio Wozzdèt? made an album in 2018, and Mickey Finn's Antiruggine came out on Hora Records in 2025. The Montreux Jazz Festival's site lists him alongside pianist Léo Tardin in a drawing-and-music workshop for its 2027 edition, and Spotify shows him playing on 2025 and 2026 releases of song material by the singer Veronica Marchi and the act Eterea.

The long list of musicians he has played with on his official site names, without any one recording attached, Billy Cobham, Paolo Fresu, Gianluca Petrella and Giovanni Guidi, among more than three hundred names. Those are his own claims; no released recording with them is itemized on Discogs, so they are not treated as documented collaborations here.

The range of Terragnoli's credits is wide: Discogs assigns his releases mostly to Contemporary Jazz, Free Improvisation, Avant-garde Jazz, Jazz-Rock and Free Jazz, but the same list includes a klezmer band, a fado group, an ambient and dub trio, a prog-rock trio and pop and canzone sessions. Instruments on the credits change from record to record - electric guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo, electric bass, harmonica, kazoo, keyboards, sampler and an item credited as "Podophono" or "Podophone" - and the credit line for a single album can run to several of them, as on Sankofa. Effects sit beside the guitar in credits from Tu Whit, Tu Whoo (1989) to Deep Changes (2016). The El Gallo Rojo credits show the collective habit that runs through the catalog: he plays in Rollerball and The Humans, mixes The Humans and Sankofa, and appears as a sideman on records led by others.
