Junyoung Song (송준영) is a drummer based in Seoul, South Korea, who works mainly in jazz and free improvisation. His name appears on records from 2014 to 2025, most of them made with the saxophonist Sunjae Lee and the Mung Music label that Lee founded in 2020. He has no published interview and no full biography, so this profile rests on his release credits, the Cafe OTO artist page, two Korean press items and the reviews of his records.
The name is printed several ways. Discogs and the release credits use Junyoung Song, and Discogs gives 송준영 as his real name in Hangul. Apple Music files two solo albums under Jun Young Song and Song Junyoung, and Korean press writes 송준영: TenAsia did in December 2014, and Seoul Culture Today did in December 2020. The Korean music site Bugs prints "송준영 Junyoung Song" in the credits of a 2019 album. Because 송준영 is a common Korean name, each credit used here names him as a drummer beside players who also appear on his other records.
Cafe OTO, the London venue, introduces him as a prolific drummer based in Seoul. Its artist page says he returned to Korea after finishing degrees at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory in Boston, that he has worked with many Korean jazz and pop musicians, and that Sunjae Lee is the most notable of them. It also names Jongshin Yoon, Lucid Fall, Mijo Jung and Mid-air Thief, and calls him a respected figure in the Korean creative music scene. A Berklee recital program dated March 26, 2010 lists a drummer named Jun Young Song of Seoul on drum set in a senior guitar recital by Jin Soo Kim; the program gives no more than that, and the page does not say it is the same musician. The page also says he has released two unaccompanied albums, Solo and Solo Live.
His first recording on Discogs is A Farewell To An Unknown Friend, released on December 15, 2014 by Leaplay Music. It is a trio of the saxophonist Sungjae Son, the pianist Eunyoung Kim and Song on drums, and TenAsia reviewed it on December 22, 2014. Eunyoung Kim then recorded the album Silent Child with him and the bassist Jaekon Jeon in September 2016 as The KEY, with Sunjae Lee on tenor saxophone and Jinsoo Kim on guitar for the closing track; Mirrorball Music issued it in 2018.
The longest thread in his work is Sunjae Lee. In 2015 the two were part of Trio Go with the guitarist Jinwon O, which improvised the six pieces of Sounds Much Better at the Yogiga Expression Gallery in Seoul; the record was mastered in 2016 and pressed as a limited vinyl edition of 300 copies by Dancing Butterfly Records in September 2017. Lee's own notes for Entropy (January 15, 2019) call Song and the bassist Minki Cho the regular members of his trio, and Song plays on six of its eight tracks with the trumpeter Peter Evans and, on two, the vibraphonist Chris Varga. In 2019 he also played drums on the Mirrorball Music release 이상한 꽃 by the vocalist Jimin Lee and on two tracks of What a Little Dragon! by the guitarist Suyu Kim.
In 2020 Lee started Mung Music, and Song appears on three of its releases. Palindrome was recorded in Seoul on July 1, 2020, with the first-generation trumpeter Choi Sun-bae and Lee, and its Bandcamp note calls it the first recording of Choi's new trio. On the stage side, Seoul Culture Today reported on December 1, 2020 that the Choi Sun-bae Trio, with Lee and the drummer 송준영, would close the programme that the Korean Cultural Centre in Germany prepared for the online JazzKorea Festival 2020, which ran from December 1 to 12 on the centre's YouTube channel. Song and Lee then made Claustrophobia, their first duo album, recorded on December 10 on a Tascam 424 cassette recorder and released on Bandcamp on February 4, 2021. Its notes say the two had played together for six years, in duos and in groups from trio to quintet; Lee wrote four of the six pieces and Song two.
Since then he has kept working in the same circle. He is the drummer of Trio Skein with the vibraphonist Chris Varga and the bassist Doyoung Kim, whose Ninth House came out on Mung Music on November 29, 2024. He is one of two drummers, with Sunki Kim, on Shamanism by the saxophonist Jung-Jae Kim, recorded on August 14, 2023 and released by Relative Pitch Records on June 20, 2025. On June 20, 2025 the alto saxophonist Soojung Lee released 26 with Song and the bassist Changmin Jun, and on July 29, 2025 he was one of two drummers at a Double Duo improvisation at Mudaeruk in Seoul with Lee, the alto saxophonist Sangbeom Kim and the drummer Gideok Moon.
No interview about his influences was found, so this section sticks to what his collaborators and reviewers wrote about the music.
Discogs files his Mung Music records with the style tag Free Jazz, Trio Go's Sounds Much Better under Avant-garde Jazz and Free Improvisation, Shamanism under Free Improvisation and A Farewell To An Unknown Friend under Contemporary Jazz. The Bandcamp note for Claustrophobia describes the duo's approach as a highly dynamic improvisatory style that puts melodic interplay and longer forms first. Keith Prosk, reviewing it for The Free Jazz Collective on March 24, 2021, heard calm yet stirring inside-outside compositions that mostly follow a head structure, and wrote that the drums mostly keep time but are not beholden to it, momentarily slurring into more textural phrasing; he likened the mood to early to mid 1960s inside-outside Blue Note records. Lee's notes for Entropy describe an album built from guided improvisation and indeterminate elements, with two pieces fully improvised.
TenAsia's critic noted that a saxophone trio usually leaves out the piano, and wrote that this unusual line-up of saxophone, piano and drums might have promised avant-garde playing but did not deliver it: Son played calmly over the white canvas laid down by Kim and Song, like painting a winter landscape. The album includes covers of three Korean pop songs.
