Alberto Mandarini on the cover of *Rome-Istanbul* (Alberto Mandarini Phoebus Ensemble, Splasc(H) Records, recorded May 1998, released 1999). (Photo: album cover art, Splasc(H) Records; not independently CC/PD-licensed - used as an honest album-cover fallback, see below) Not CC/PD - album cover art, used under the vault's documented album-cover-fallback convention — Cropped from the front cover of Rome-Istanbul (Splasc(H) Records, CDH 674.2, 1999), Discogs release 6287056 (https://www.discogs.com/release/6287056), image hosted at https://i.discogs.com/Hr-CN5AXXmy_0WDNK-YBz--162hAfGdDA0BfzeP9hec/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:595/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTYyODcw/NTYtMTQxNTczNTYz/MC00ODI0LmpwZWc.jpeg . The cover is a genuine photograph of Mandarini himself, seated, smiling, holding a trumpet, against a brick wall - not an illustration or unrelated stock image.

Alberto Mandarini was born in 1966 in Trino Vercellese, a small town in the Piedmont region best known for its rice paddies, and started performing young, working with traditional jazz combos alongside Italian symphony orchestras and picking up prizes at competitions in Stresa, Moncalieri, Asti and Busalla. That double life never really ended: across four decades he has held chairs in the RAI Turin Symphony Orchestra, the Filarmonici di Torino and the Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, played brass chamber music, and built one of the longer, more varied sideman careers in Italian creative jazz, almost entirely on trumpet and flugelhorn.

His first documented jazz credit on record is Mirabilia! (CMC, 1988) with the Enrico Fazio Quintet, the start of a working relationship with bassist and bandleader Enrico Fazio that runs, credit by credit, all the way to Girotondo (We Insist! Records, 2022) under the Enrico Fazio Ensemble banner - 34 years and at least nine albums across Fazio's Quintet, 6-tet/10-tet, Septet, Ensemble and Critical Mass lineups, the longest single collaborator relationship in Mandarini's discography.

In 1990 the Italian Instabile Orchestra was assembled for the Festival di Noci, and Mandarini has been in its trumpet section ever since. His earliest orchestra credit on record is Live In Noci And Rive De Gier (Leo Records, 1992), followed by the orchestra's ECM debut-adjacent Skies Of Europe (1994/95) and European Concerts '94-'97 (Nel Jazz), then Litania Sibilante (ENJA, 2000), Previsioni Del Tempo / Forecast (Imprint, 2002), The Owner Of The River Bank (ENJA/Justin Time, 2003) - a live document, recorded at the Talos Festival in Ruvo di Puglia for the orchestra's tenth anniversary, of a guest appearance by Cecil Taylor - London Hymns (2007, live at the London Jazz Festival), Creative Orchestra (Bolzano) 2007 (Rai Trade, 2008) with guest Anthony Braxton, Totally Gone (Rai Trade, 2010), and, after a long gap, Plays Ellington (Felmay, released 2025 from a 2013 Porto concert), which the Torino Jazz Festival's own 30 April 2026 programme frames as the orchestra's documented return. That is 33 years in the same working big band, alongside colleagues including Gianluigi Trovesi, Pino Minafra, Paolo Damiani, Carlo Actis Dato and Giancarlo Schiaffini.

Mandarini has just as long a history with Giorgio Gaslini, appearing on the pianist-composer's Masks (Musica Jazz/Soul Note, 1992), the Mister O - Jazz Opera (Soul Note, 1997), Ballets (Soul Note, 1998) with Gaslini's Globo Quartet, Enigma (Soul Note, 2001) and Urban Griot (Soul Note, 2003) with the Proxima Centauri Orchestra - the latter alongside reed player Achille Succi - and the retrospective Suite 1994-2008 (Jazzit Records, 2012).

He has also built his own projects. In 1994 he and fellow trumpeter Guido Mazzon formed the Trumpet Buzz Duo, releasing Trumpet "Buzz" Duo on Splasc(H) in 1996; the same year he co-founded the Brasserie Trio with baritone saxophonist Carlo Actis Dato and drummer Lauro Rossi, recording Musique Mécanique (Leo Records, 1999). In 1996 (his own site's account puts the founding a year later, in 1997; see notes.md) he formed the nine-piece Phoebus Ensemble, whose debut Rome-Istanbul was recorded in May 1998 and released on Splasc(H) in 1999, followed by the string-augmented Love Song (Phoebus Quartet with Strings, DDE Records, 2006). In 2001 he formed the Alberto Mandarini Quartet with pianist Umberto Petrin, bassist Giovanni Maier and drummer U.T. Gandhi, releasing the leader album Passio (Express Your Soul, 2004), reviewed by All About Jazz, and he has also directed the CVM Jazz Orchestra, the big band of the Centro Vercelli Musica.

A separate, long-running commitment has been Enten Eller, percussionist Massimo Barbiero's free-improvising ensemble: Mandarini appears on Medea (CMC, 1996) through to Ελπίδα (Elpida) (Dodicilune, 2026), a recent release crediting Enten Eller alongside guest clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi - thirty years in the same group, with guest appearances along the way from Tim Berne (Melquiades, 1999; Auto Da Fé, 2001; Euclide, 2004) and Javier Girotto (Ecuba, 2010).

Alongside all of this, Mandarini spent nine years, from 1995 into the mid-2000s, in singer-songwriter Paolo Conte's touring orchestra, appearing on Una Faccia In Prestito (1995), Tournée 2 (1998), The Best Of Paolo Conte (Nonesuch, 1998), Razmataz (2000) and Reveries (Nonesuch, 2003) - a substantial non-jazz commitment that runs alongside, rather than instead of, his jazz catalogue.

He teaches trumpet at the Istituto Comunale di Musica "G. Verdi" in Asti, having previously taught at the Centro Vercelli Musica "Enrico Lucchini," and has taught at the Incontri Internazionali di Musica in Chatillon since 1999. His own biography lists further collaborations with Elton Dean, Tony Scott, Maria Schneider and Charlie Mariano; these are self-reported on his official site and repeated by German Wikipedia, but no specific recording or credit for any of the four could be independently confirmed via Discogs, so they are noted here rather than treated as verified in the way his Tim Berne, Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton credits are (all three confirmed at the release-credit level).

Mandarini's catalogue reads as two careers running in parallel rather than one. The first is orchestral: three decades inside the Italian Instabile Orchestra's trumpet section and, separately, inside Giorgio Gaslini's various large ensembles, both settings where his trumpet sits inside a big, collectively improvising unit built out of Italy's post-1980s free-jazz scene rather than a fixed small-group book. The second is a string of smaller, more personal projects he has led or co-led himself - the Trumpet Buzz Duo with Guido Mazzon, the Brasserie Trio with Carlo Actis Dato, the Phoebus Ensemble, the Alberto Mandarini Quartet - each one a different-sized vehicle for his own writing.

Running underneath both is Enten Eller, a free-improvising group he has stayed with for thirty years without ever being its leader, and a 34-year sideman relationship with bassist Enrico Fazio that outlasts every other single credit in his discography. The scope-gate case for him rests less on any one dramatic association and more on sheer duration and range: an artist who has spent decades inside some of Italian free jazz's most significant institutional ensembles (the Instabile Orchestra, the Gaslini orchestras) while also sustaining his own small-group projects and a parallel classical/orchestral career, all at once, for close to forty years.

Alberto Mandarini Full Discography

Verified against the Discogs API (artist 378893, plus the linked group/leader entities listed below). Organized by Discogs role: Main (leader/co-leader releases under his own name or a duo/group he fronts), then group-entity Main releases filed under a band name, then Appearance (sideman, guest and compilation credits). Personnel is the Discogs extraartists credit list where it was pulled release-by-release; for the bulk of the 111 Appearance-role items, Discogs' own artist-releases feed gives only artist/title/label/year without a full extraartists pull for each one (that would be 111 separate API calls) - his own instrument (trumpet, occasionally flugelhorn) is used as the default Role text, and the specific extraartists list is given only where it was independently pulled to confirm a cross-link (marked "extraartists-credit verified").

Identity resolution: Discogs artist 378893 ("Alberto Mandarini"), confirmed by the artist profile text itself ("Italian trumpeter, born 1966 in Trino Vercellese") matching his official site and Wikidata (Q1574904) independently, and by consistent group affiliations (Italian Instabile Orchestra, Enrico Fazio 7tet, Brasserie Trio, Enten Eller, Giorgio Gaslini Proxima Centauri Orchestra, Alberto Mandarini Phoebus Ensemble, Alberto Mandarini Quartet, and others) matching the independently sourced biography. No disambiguation problem: Discogs lists only this one entity under the name, with name variations "A. Mandarini" / "A.Mandarini" / "Mandarini" all folded into it.

Release count: 115 items under his own artist entity (/artists/378893/releases): 3 Main, 111 Appearance, 1 Unofficial Release. The Alberto Mandarini Phoebus Ensemble (entity 4092480) and Alberto Mandarini Quartet (entity 8126644) sub-entities each hold one further Main release of their own (Rome-Istanbul and Passio respectively), both listed under Main below since they are genuinely his own leader dates, filed by Discogs under a group name rather than his personal artist ID.

Spotify: this vault has no dedicated Spotify API credentials of its own; links below were sourced via WebSearch and independently confirmed through the keyless open.spotify.com/oembed endpoint (title match) rather than fabricated. Streaming coverage is thin and skewed toward the highest-profile releases (the ECM and Enja titles, the 2025 Instabile Orchestra reunion record); the great majority of the small-label 1990s-2010s sideman catalogue (Splasc(H), CMC, Leo Records, Musica Jazz, and the many self-released or "Not On Label" items) is genuinely absent from the service, not just unsearched, matching the pattern already logged on this project's other free-improv-adjacent builds (Braida, Actis Dato, Del Fra).

Buy: no Amazon Associates tag is set up for this project yet (2026-07-31 standing note, carried over from every build since). Cells give a Discogs release or master link rather than an Amazon link, since almost none of this catalogue is listed on Amazon; a deliberate, flagged deviation from the template's literal instruction, matching the precedent set on the Braida and Actis Dato builds.
