Mario Schiano was born in Naples on July 20, 1933. He started out in the early 1950s playing accordion in Naples nightclubs before moving to the saxophone and turning toward jazz around 1960. He relocated to Rome in the mid-1960s, where he found what Siena Jazz's Archivio del Jazz calls the ideal artistic environment to pursue his interest in American countercultural music, frequenting the city's alternative Folkstudio club and the Beat '72 research theater.
In November 1966 Schiano co-founded the Gruppo Romano Free Jazz with trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini, bassist Marcello Melis and drummer Franco Pecori, by most accounts Italy's first ensemble dedicated to collective free improvisation. The quartet's debut recording, If Not Ecstatic We Refund (1970, with Bruno Tommaso by then in the bass chair), documented the group before Schiano moved into a long run of leader and co-billed records through the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s: octet and quintet dates with musicians from Giorgio Gaslini's Santa Cecilia jazz course on Sud (1973, also Massimo Urbani's recording debut at sixteen); a quartet session with American visitors Sam Rivers, Dave Holland and Barry Altschul on Rendez-Vous (1977); duo records with Guido Mazzon (Gospel, 1977) and Antonello Salis (Old Fashioned, 1978); a guest date with the Ganelin Trio on A Concert In Moscow (1986); and trio sessions with Joëlle Léandre and Peter Kowald (Tracks, 1993; Blue Memories, 1995).
Discogs credits Schiano's own artist entity with 71 distinct releases as leader, co-leader, sideman and compilation contributor, plus one additional compilation appearance filed under a group alias; a full accounting is in discography-full.md in this folder. From the 1990s he was also a member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra, appearing on its ECM release Skies Of Europe (1995) and on The Owner Of The River Bank (2003), the orchestra's live document with Cecil Taylor. He mentored the teenage Massimo Urbani, and, according to Italian Wikipedia, crossed paths in Rome's free-jazz circles with American expatriates Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri and Don Cherry, though no specific shared Discogs credit could be confirmed for those three. Away from music, Schiano also acted in several films, including Nanni Moretti's Palombella Rossa and Caro diario and Marco Tullio Giordana's La meglio gioventù (2003), in which he played a university professor.
Schiano died in Rome on May 10, 2008, following a long illness, at 74. He is remembered in Italian jazz writing as one of the fathers of Italian free jazz. Trumpeter Guido Mazzon and the Italian Instabile Orchestra dedicated their 2007 Alto Adige Jazz Festival performance with Anthony Braxton to his memory, and Angelo Olivieri recorded a full tribute album, If Not (Omaggio A Mario Schiano), in 2012.
Siena Jazz's Archivio del Jazz describes Schiano's music as fusing Afro-American free jazz with Italian folk material through a "surreal and at times burlesque theatricality," with an expressive vocabulary that drew on the contrast of moods in New Orleans funeral-procession music. His work was closely tied to a Marxist political outlook and to advocacy for the marginalized communities of southern Italy, a stance that initially drew hostility from Italy's musical establishment. Where many of his contemporaries moved toward mainstream jazz and fusion in the 1980s, Schiano kept working in avant-garde, free-improvised settings for the rest of his career, recording steadily with the European free-improvisation circle built around labels like Splasc(H) and the FMP/Instant Composers Pool axis of musicians (Peter Kowald, Paul Lovens, Paul Rutherford, Ernst Reijseger). A handful of his own records, made with the multi-instrumentalist Tommaso Vittorini in the late 1970s and early 1980s, moved into a cabaret-adjacent, satirical vein closer to novelty pop than jazz, disclosed as such in the discography rather than folded silently into his jazz output.
