Luigi Vitale is a vibraphonist, marimba and balafon player born on February 10, 1982, in Salerno. He grew up in a musical family and was drawn to jazz early by records from his father's collection; at twelve he began studying drums with his father, and within a year he was admitted to a conservatory. He earned his diploma in percussion instruments at the Conservatory of Salerno at twenty, under Carlo Di Blasi, in 2002, then turned his attention to the vibraphone. From 1998 he attended advanced vibraphone and marimba seminars with David Friedman, Dave Samuels, Ed Saindon and Saverio Tasca, and in 2004 he won first place, plus the Audience Prize, at the Premio Massimo Urbani as young talent of Italian jazz. A second, jazz-specific diploma followed in 2009 at the Conservatory of Castelfranco Veneto, by which point he had relocated to the Veneto/Friuli region where he has been based ever since. The same year, the Vitale-Magatelli-Windfeld Trio placed second at the international competition of the Getxo International Jazz Festival, near Bilbao, Spain; the trio's sole Discogs-listed recording, Vol. 1, carries no release date on the database.

His working circle centers on flutist Massimo De Mattia, whose various billings (Massimo De Mattia Quartet, Massimo De Mattia Suonomadre, and his own name) account for nine of Vitale's Discogs sideman credits between 2012 and 2024: Black Novel (2012), Teatro Arrigoni (2013), Hypermodern (2014), Skin (2015, a trio track with saxophonist Luciano Caruso), Jazz Loft (2015), Hypocenter (2017), Ethnoshock! (2018), Riot (2019) and Domicide (2024). With drummer Luca Colussi he has worked in two other formats: XYQuartet, whose Idea F (2013) was their first record together, and a duo, Stilelibero (nusica.org, 2015), improvised and recorded in a single sitting in March 2014. Colussi also plays alongside Vitale in Kalimbata, the trio behind his fourth leader album.

Vitale's own leader catalog runs to five albums. His first, Tripterygion (Aut Records, 2011), is a full duo of vibraphone and soprano saxophone with Luciano Caruso, recorded at Vitale's own home studio in Colle Umberto in June 2009 and released as Aut Records' second title. Le Four (Artesuono, 2020) is a quartet date with guitarist Roberto Gemo, clarinetist Marco Mariani and double bassist Marco Trabucco. Gravity (Artesuono, 2022) is a trio with double bassist Mattia Magatelli and drummer Max Trabucco, with trumpeter Mirko Cisilino as a featured guest, confirmed on Spotify. His most recent album, Kalimbata (Artesuono, 2024), is built around vibraphone, balafon and kalimba alongside Gianpaolo Rinaldi's Hammond organ and Colussi's drums, with a guest cast that reads as a reunion of his regular collaborators: Daniele D'Agaro on clarinet and tenor saxophone, Massimo De Mattia on flute, Denis Biason on guitar, Francesco Bearzatti on tenor saxophone and Cisilino again on trumpet; one track, "Calypso For Daniele," is named for D'Agaro.

Across the Slovenian border, Vitale has recorded with percussionist Zlatko Kaučič's Cerkno Jubileum Orchestra (Zvočni Sejalec, 2016) and with the Klopotec-label group Daniele D'Agaro Ultramarine, whose Ucei (2017) credits him on four of its eleven tracks. His own trio project There Be Monsters, with Slovenian musicians, has released two albums, There Be Monsters (2017) and Rubikon (2022). He also appears on double bassist Giovanni Maier's Tilt (Improvised Concerto For Flute And Chamber Orchestra) (Artesuono, 2021), recorded live at Trieste's Museo Revoltella in June 2019 with De Mattia on flute. Away from these regular circles, his catalog includes one-off dates on a Fado-inflected folk record (Sineterra, 2008, on which he plays drums rather than vibraphone) and a Dixieland session (The Dixieland Stumblers, 2015); Abraq Ad Habra (2014) is the only entry in his 31-title Discogs catalog not tagged Jazz.

Beyond the recording studio, Vitale has performed with trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, saxophonists Tino Tracanna and Pietro Tonolo, percussionist Dave Samuels and percussionist Luis Agudo, and has appeared with Rome's Teatro dell'Opera and the Orchestra Sinfonica del Friuli Venezia Giulia. He leads his own working group, the Luigi Vitale Quartet, playing original compositions arranged for vibraphone, reeds, bass and percussion, and in 2026 has been touring a trio, "Ning," with bassist Mattia Magatelli and drummer Gabriele Da Ros, mixing standards by Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane with his own writing; the trio played Trieste's Knulp club in April 2026 on a bill organized by the Circolo del Jazz Thelonious.

Vitale's catalog runs on two overlapping tracks. One is the Friuli/Veneto free-improvisation circle built around Massimo De Mattia, Daniele D'Agaro and Luciano Caruso, where his vibraphone and marimba sit inside a contemporary-jazz and free-improvisation vocabulary alongside reeds and double bass. The other is a more percussion-forward, ethno-inflected voice of his own devising, heard most fully on Kalimbata, where balafon and kalimba, played alongside a Hammond organ, build folk-rooted grooves rather than free structures; the same instruments carry over into his other leader dates and into sideman credits like Ethnoshock! and Riot. His training runs through both traditions: a classical percussion diploma from the Conservatory of Salerno, a jazz diploma from Castelfranco Veneto, and advanced vibraphone workshops with David Friedman, Dave Samuels and Ed Saindon. On Stilelibero, his duo record with Luca Colussi, he extends the vibraphone itself with preparations (a chain-draped "prepared vibraphone"), a bowed double bass and guitar effects pedals, pushing the instrument toward texture rather than melody.
