Emanuele Parrini plays an instrument jazz has never fully made room for, and he has spent more than thirty years and upward of 90 recording credits proving the violin belongs in the music's most demanding company. He won the Jazzit Award as Italy's best jazz violinist nine years running, 2010 through 2018, and he is one of only a handful of names anywhere in the world - alongside a lineage running back through Stéphane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty and Billy Bang - to have built a career on the instrument inside jazz rather than alongside it.

He trained first under Antonio Cavallucci, a member of the RAI Orchestra in Rome, and then with the baroque specialist Marco Fois, a classical grounding that shows in his technique even after decades in free improvisation. Encouraged by the trumpeter Lino Patruno and the arranger Giulio Libano, he won a European Community scholarship to Siena Jazz for professional jazz performance. His first working band, Hot Club de Florence, founded in 1993, took its name and its repertoire directly from Django Reinhardt and Grappelli's Quintette du Hot Club de France - the gypsy-jazz tradition that was, at the time, the violin's only well-worn path into jazz.

He left that path almost immediately. His recording debut, Duetto (Fewnotes Records, 1998), a duo with pianist Roberto Andreucci, already points away from the swing repertoire and toward the free-improvisation scene he would spend the rest of his career inside. The turn became permanent in 1999, when he began working with the reedman Dimitri Grechi Espinoza; their partnership produced Dinamitri Jazz Folklore, a group blending jazz with North and West African folkloric material, and its 1999 debut album Vita Nova. That same year, at a workshop in Terni, he met the American clarinetist Tony Scott - a meeting his own official biography and multiple Italian jazz outlets describe as the defining relationship of his artistic life. Scott, who had recorded with Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker decades earlier and had lived and worked across Asia for years before settling in Italy, heard something in Parrini and brought him into his own groups; the two are Discogs-confirmed together on Folklore In Black (Dinamitri Jazz Folklore Avec Tony Scott, Caligola, 2003) and on Parrini's own 1974 Io So - Damn If I Know (Splasc(h), 2006), on which Scott plays clarinet, tenor saxophone and voice. Scott died in 2007, the same year Parrini's other major professional relationships were consolidating; Parrini has called him a constant guide and point of reference.

2003 produced the session that ties Parrini most directly into Italian jazz's other major figures. Rotella Variations (Splasc(h)), co-led with singer Tiziana Ghiglioni and dedicated to the visual artist Mimmo Rotella, is Discogs-verified to include trumpeter Enrico Rava, clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi, soprano saxophonist Claudio Fasoli, alto saxophonist Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini and drummer Tiziano Tononi on a single date - a genuine summit of the scene rather than a claimed one. The same stretch of years brought him into the Italian Instabile Orchestra, the large improvising ensemble that had already been touring internationally for over a decade; he became a full member around 2003 and stayed through the group's 2007 Top Jazz win as Musica Jazz's Group of the Year. His Instabile tenure is Discogs-confirmed on London Hymns (2007), Totally Gone (2010), the documentary soundtrack Il Suono Instabile Della Libertà (2010) and the orchestra's 2025 return, Plays Ellington - and, most notably, on Creative Orchestra (Bolzano) 2007 (Rai Trade, 2008), credited alongside guest conductor Anthony Braxton.

Parrini joined Nexus, the long-running duo-turned-group co-founded by drummer Tiziano Tononi and saxophonist Daniele Cavallanti, around 2007; Discogs confirms his violin credit on Nexus Plays Nexus (2010), The Call: For A New Life (2021) and Nexus Plays Dolphy (2024). He and Cavallanti also share direct billing on Spirits Up Above (2006) and Rings Of Fire (2008), both Tononi/Cavallanti co-led dates; Spirits Up Above is separately notable for its guest bassist, William Parker, who returned for Tononi's Vertical Invaders (2010) - both Discogs-confirmed alongside Parrini's own violin credit.

Through the 2010s Parrini built two parallel bodies of work: a series of albums for the Milanese arranger Dino Betti Van Der Noot's orchestra - September's New Moon (2011), The Stuff Dreams Are Made On (2013) and Notes Are But Wind (2015), the latter two each named Musica Jazz's Top Jazz Album of the Year, plus Où Sont Les Notes D'Antan? (2017), Two Ships In The Night (2019), The Silence Of The Broken Lute (2021) and Let Us Recount Our Dreams (2023) - and his own Viaggio Al Centro Del Violino trilogy (Rudi Records/Long Song Records, 2013-2016), a sustained, volume-by-volume examination of what the violin alone, and in small and expanding groups, can do inside a jazz context. The trilogy's second volume, Are You Ready?, expanded to a sextet with vibraphonist Pasquale Mirra and reedman Piero Bittolo Bon; its associated quartet, heard on The Blessed Prince (Long Song Records, 2016), reunited him with Grechi Espinoza and bassist Giovanni Maier, his most frequent duo and small-group partner across the 2000s and 2010s (Hic Et Nunc, 2004; Dark Melodies, 2010; Azure, 2014; Stories, 2025).

Parrini's international profile widened in the 2020s. Digging (Reflections On Jazz And Blues) (Felmay, 2020), billed to the Emanuele Parrini Quintet featuring the American cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum, is Discogs-confirmed with Grechi Espinoza, Maier and drummer Andrea Melani. The same year, he appears on Solar Winds (Long Song Records), the Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim's John Coltrane tribute that won Best Tribute Album from New York City Jazz Record. In 2022 he began a duo recording series with Tononi, The Many Moods Of Interaction (Felmay), followed in 2024 by Other Interactions ...On July 5th, expanded with Italian soprano saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, American trombonist Steve Swell and bassist Andrea Grossi, all Discogs-confirmed on the same session. Eating Poetry (Clean Feed, 2023), an improvising trio with Slovenian guitarist Samo Šalamon and Spanish drummer Vasco Trilla, set tunes to the poetry of Kristina Kočan and put Parrini's violin at the center of a genuinely pan-European free-jazz session, released on one of the genre's most respected international labels.

His discography also includes One Lip 5's collective free-improvisation date Apro Il Silenzio (Setola Di Maiale, 2014), Discogs-confirmed alongside trumpeter Alberto Mandarini and guitarist Claudio Lodati, and a run of appearances alongside Tiziana Ghiglioni (So Long Flores, 2004; A Male Walking In The Cauldron, 2009; Figli, 2011; Non Sono Io, 2010). Animal Farm (Felmay, 2025/2026), his most recent leader album, is an open suite inspired by Orwell's novel; press materials for the Florence quintet performing it name guitarist Domenico Caliri, bassist Giovanni Maier and drummer Andrea Melani, though Discogs' own entry for the release has not yet been filled in with formal credits. He was inducted into Flavio Caprera's Dizionario del Jazz Italiano and is cited in La Storia del Jazz by Luca Onori, Maurizio Franco and Roberto Brazzale - the two standard reference points for the music's history in Italy.

Parrini's playing sits at the intersection of two violin traditions that rarely meet: the swing-and-gypsy-jazz lineage of Grappelli and Reinhardt he started in with Hot Club de Florence, and the postwar American and European free-improvisation vocabulary he moved into after meeting Tony Scott. What makes his catalogue distinctive is how completely the second displaced the first - within a few years of his 1998 debut, his working context was Dinamitri Jazz Folklore's African-inflected material, the collectively improvised Italian Instabile Orchestra, and duo dates with musicians like William Parker and Anthony Braxton who came up through the AACM and downtown New York scenes rather than through any string tradition at all.

That places him inside the same European free-jazz current as his most consistent Italian collaborators - Tiziano Tononi, Daniele Cavallanti and the Italian Instabile Orchestra's rotating cast - a scene defined less by a fixed sound than by a shared commitment to structured collective improvisation across large and small ensembles alike. His extended-technique vocabulary on violin (and, on later records like Stories, viola) lets him function as a horn-like solo voice inside a free-jazz frontline rather than a string-section color, which is precisely the role he plays on Rotella Variations alongside Rava, Trovesi and Fasoli, and on Digging alongside Taylor Ho Bynum.
